EDIT: see also this update on a no-power-on issue with the camera as well as RisingCam's support. • RisingCam RT5109 no-po... - TL;DR is that 4 months in I plugged the unit into power and got no power on, RisingCam was responsive with support, first to walk me through a repair attempt, then to promptly ship out a replacement part. Will update this note after part arrives.
I absolutely suck at making a video short and concise. Ah well.
This is my review of the RisingCam RT5109 / YW5109 4K 60FPS 8.3MP microscope camera.
Disclosures: I have none. I bought the camera with my own money, received no discounts for reviewing, no kickbacks, no links to get me money or whatever. I was not solicited to do this review and received no free or discounted products of any kind related to this review, etcetera ad nauseam.
As of when I bought it the camera costs ~$500. I waited until AliExpress was having one of their sales and was able to use a coupon to reduce that. Typically if you can wait a month or so for when they run sales you should be able to use a $30 or $50 off coupon for something this expensive.
Disclaimer: this is my first microscope camera, which means I have not had others to compare with.

Thanks for the video I appreciate it. I am looking to get a polarized ring light soon. It makes a big difference.

Edit: Ah, I'm guessing you found the part of the video where I mention the light model. Yeah, it's a low-cost item that really gives you an impressive improvement in imaging results. It's the iFixes iL37, dozens of sellers on AliExpress sell it. While I'm sure there are options that are qualitatively better for providing adjustable polarized light (I will note that what I have allows some 'spillover' by not perfectly blocking all the LED output and making sure everything goes through the polarizing filter), it is *for sure* the current best bang for your buck. You can get it for around the $22 range while other options are over $100. Given the tech is just an LED ring light and 2 polarized light filters, the other options that are priced at over $100 are just inexcusable in my opinion.

@@neverendingstudent Ya I just purchased one on ALI. I found one for $18.90 with a coupon. Ya I agree 100$ for a polarizer is a bit steep. Thanks again for the video !

@@neverendingstudent I just noticed your UI is slightly different than mine. They must have a firmware update after I purchased mine. I do not have the " Framerate " I'm going to message them and see. I noticed my auto exposure is really bright / strong when I zoom in or out on some boards. My camera does get warm to the touch like Sorins too. My brightness defaults to 46 too.

@@shiftctrlhack For mine, I found that when you do stuff that weirds-out the brightness, just clicking on the slide-bar for brightness and doing any adjustment, even if you end up back at the original number, fixes it - at least on my firmware version. As for the framerate: I mentioned in my review (the review I posted on AliExpress) that I was running mine at 30FPS and maybe they removed the option to 'idiot-proof' the firmware to prevent the perception that it wasn't running at 60FPS. What firmware version do you have? Mine lists as 'YW5109_3.0'.

what is the name of the microscope you have installed on and do you recommend it ?

It's an AmScope microscope, specifically the AmScope 3.5X-45X SM-4TPX. I like it just fine for my use-case, the magnification range gives me everything I need for working on electronics and the occasional curiosity I have to look at random stuff. If you want one for electronics use or mechanical like watchmaking, then yes, I feel I can recommend it. That is not to say there isn't better out there for what you want out of a microscope, or possibly cheaper for what you need out of it. I always recommend doing your own research for your specific use-case. Whatever you might choose, I DO strongly recommend the trinocular feature - the clarity you get from direct optics (looking through the eyepieces) will always be superior to camera/display.

Your video saved me! Thank you for showing the spacer! I could not get the proper field of view without it. Also helped to hear you had the same gripes...you confirmed all of my concerns. I agree its quirky shortcomings are worth the fantastic quality. Appreciate the polarized ring light recommendation. Didn't know one existed. Lots of reflections in watchmaking. That will really help! My setup is almost 100% dialed in thanks to you!
