I really appreciate your videos. They are very in depth and informative. I have purchased from WLL in the past, but I purchased my Rocket from a different retailer for one reason, and it is because the other retailer does pay for shipping on warranty work, one way, where according to one of your chat reps, you do not pay for any shipping either to or from. I bought a Jura machine from WLL, and the cost of shipping it for repairs made it not worth the cost. I hope you will look into that. Otherwise WLL is a great retailer with awesome videos. I have learned much from your channel, and again, thank you for posting them.

Do you think it would be more wise to purchase a Profitec pro 600 over the rocket Giotto cronometro?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 года назад
Hi Zack, Thanks for the question. Personally, I'd go with the Pro 600 unless you're going to go with EVO R version of the Giotto which is plumbable direct to waterline and has a rotary pump. The Type V Giotto is not plumbable and uses a vibration pump. Other considerations: The Pro 600 is a dual boiler so can run independent temperatures in each boiler. Plus, the Pro 600 can run at higher steam pressure than the Giotto for better frothing performance. And, the Pro 600 is available with flow control (free upgrade at the moment from us) of the E61 group which expands your extraction capabilities. Check out the Pro 600 w/Flow control here: www.wholelattelove.com/products/profitec-pro-600-dual-boiler-espresso-machine-with-flow-control Hope that helps! Marc

I just bought my rocket a mozzafiato but it’s not increasing it’s brewing pressure, what can I do?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 2 года назад
Hi RA, Assuming you mean the brew pressure gauge not showing pressure? Is that with or without coffee in the portafilter? Try inserting the blind filter basket in the portafilter (back flush disc) and running the pump. If pressure does not register it may be a bad gauge. If you mean the pressure does not go up when you adjust, understand you must have the blind filter basket in place and the pump running to see an increase/decrease in brew pressure when adjusting. If it's the first problem, and no resolution contact your retailer for support. If purchased from Whole Latte Love you can contact our support staff here: support.wholelattelove.com/hc/en-us Marc

So with those machines, you find there's no need for a cooling flush? Also was the PID conversion chart accurate in the manual vs real life testing with the scace?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 года назад
Hi Ben, Correct, in most cases a cooling flush is not required on newer HX machines with PID. Conversion chart is fairly accurate based on my Scace testing. Do be aware ambient temps can have an impact. So if in a particularly cold or hot environment you will see some variance. But, the great thing with PID is the variance will be consistent so it's easy to compensate. Even something like not having the PF in the group when machine is idle will impact brew temp as thermal mass of the PF is part of E61 thermosiphon system which bleeds heat from boiler. Marc

Hi NG, You are welcome for the video. Works fine used sporadically. Takes about 25 minutes for full warm when turned on from cold. Hard to be specific with energy used when idle. Likely not a huge difference when compared to energy used if turning on from cold multiple times. If concerned, might consider a WiFi appliance rated timer. Turn it off/on remotely, set scheduled on/off times, etc. Marc

Hi BL, Thanks for the question. For these and other E61 group machines we recommend 30 minutes of warmup time for complete temperature stability. Be sure and have the empty PF in the group during warmup. You can speed warmup a bit - maybe by 10 minutes or so by running a few blank shots. Marc

Hi AA, Thanks for the question. Here's a link to the parts diagram for the machine: wiki.wholelattelove.com/images/d/dc/Mozzafiato_and_Giotto_Type_v_Parts_Diagram.pdf You can change brew pressure by adjusting part 4 on page 14. It's an OPV/Expansion Valve. It's preset at the factory and really no reason to change it. Test for proper brew pressure by operating the pump with a backflush disc in place. optimum pressure is 10 bar on your machine gauge which delivers 9 bar to the group under real brewing condition. If within +/- 1 bar I'd leave as is.

@BensCoffeeRants

It might sometimes overshoot, but if you have it set to 120 it should stick around 120 mostly, it's probably normal to see it fall to 119 maybe after a shot or steaming and then maybe overshoot to 121 briefly.

I was looking into the ECM Classika PID prior to this machine. After seeing this review, I believe I am more willing to spend the extra for a heat exchanger with PID to accurately pull a shot while not waiting for steaming temperate to go up. What are the big differences between this pump and a rotary pump? Is there a big change in quality?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 года назад
Hi Matt, Thanks for the question. If doing milk drinks regularly I would definetly consider going to a machine with an HX boiler so you do not have to wait for steam. As to differences... Most rotary pump machines can be plumbed direct to waterline so you never have to fill a reservoir which IMO is a life changing experience! Also rotary pumps are much quieter than vibration pump machines although the Classika isn't very loud. Rotary pumps are commercial grade so more robust. They also have a higher flow rate. Usually about 11g/s vs about 8g/s for a vibration pump machine. Hope that helps! Marc

Hey Marc, what’s your thoughts Mozzafiato vs Profitec pro 500? Considering buying a HX, but not sure I am leaning towards the rocket cause of the new shot timer which is missing from the pro 500.. what you think?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 года назад
Hi Adam, Thanks for the question. The Pro 500 is one of my favorite reservoir fed HX machines. If the shot timer is important to you then the Chronometro Mozzafiatio may be a better choice. The Rocket and Profitec machines are comparable in potential espresso quality. The Pro 500 is vibration pump and not plumbable. Another change: I think they also updated the steam and water wands, so they're actually no burn? I have the non timer version and the Steam wand claims to be 'insulated' but gets super hot after steaming, and funny enough it didn't come with the plastic things yours has! *update: So yeah mine gets hot after extended steaming times but it's pretty quick (like 10-15 sec) for my small amount of milk for a cappuccino, so not usually an issue. Although I do get sprayed with hot water from the super shallow drip tray when stopping a shot due to the water ejecting from the OPV!

I love my brand new Rocket Mozzafiato Evol R with Chrono. It's been almost 3 months with it. However, lately, randomly it seems, if I leave it on, sometimes before my coffee extraction, sometimes after, the boiler gauge passes the green zone and either goes into the red zone or passes it. When the machine passes the red zone it starts making this noise that sounds what I can describe as a train whistle. I have to let the pressure out via the steamer and turn off the machine. Most times it doesn't do it. Is this something that needs warranty repair or is there something I can do. One note is that I use the IMS shower (not sure if that makes a difference). What could it be?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 года назад
Hi CRR62, Thanks for the question and my apologies for a delayed response - I've been offline for a week or so. @Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 года назад
Hi Juan, Thanks for the question. Depending on your ambient temperatures and length of idle time it is possible you can have an initial hit of overheated water. That's more likely when heating up with a bottomless PF in the group as it has a lower thermal mass than a spouted PF so reduces heat transfer out of the machine. Hope that helps! Marc

I’ve had a Rocket Giotto for 5 years. Recently, the machine stopped pumping water. When speaking to the company, a local tech was recommended that apparently is Rocket certified. He came to the house and after examining the machine, determined it needed a new pump. The pump was ordered and brought to the to the house for installation. Once installed and the machine turned on, it produced a very weak sound and was not pumping water. The sound was unusual - not at all like the louder sound the machine always produced when turned on and pumping water.The tech did not seem to be familiar with what the machine should sound like at all. He checked the hose which didn’t seem to be the problem and saw that he inserted a spring inside the tube. Finally he started banging a component (I imagine the pump) to get it started which didn’t work but somehow snapped a wire creating many sparks! At this point I am terrified of what could have happened! He also thought that the pump he received may have been old. He insisted that he could do a better job at his workshop if he took my machine because he would have access to his tools. I didn’t feel comfortable with this but seems I had little choice. My question is why the spring in the tube? This seems to me like it would be more of a potential for rusting and wearing of the plastic tube. Second, after all the sparks, I have no idea at this time if he damaged another component! What could this have been? Any response would be appreciated. At this time I’m looking for answers elsewhere as well as a more reliable source for purchases.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage Год назад
Hi Victoria, Sorry to hear about your experience with the local tech. I'm not entirely certain which component you are referring to with the spring in plastic tube. Sometimes coiled wire (spring look) are put in plastic or silicone tubing to keep them from collapsing or pinching off. In those the spring material is a type that will not rust. Banging a pump and creating sparks - wow! Not a standard repair procedure. Impossible to say what component may have been damaged without seeing machine in person. Marc

@@Wholelattelovepage Thanks for your response. My Rocket is the Giotto V. There is a small squarish box on the bottom side attached to several wires. I gather he broke or pulled a wire. He said he would have to replace a wire but I’m afraid that the damage could be beyond that. It was quite a fireworks display. My thought is that he is not very familiar with this model. He is mainly a commercial repair tech and recently took on home machines. The new pump also seemed somewhat different. It had a thicker neck. He thought he had another pump at home and would try it. All in all, I have little confidence. I asked about warranty for his work and said he could only give me the warranty that was given to him for the pump……….30 days. Not sure if this is common practice.

Are there any other / additional advantages of the rotary pump version over the vibration pump, other than being plumpable?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 года назад
Hi Frank, Rotary pumps are more robust than vibe pumps, brew pressure on the rotary models is adjustable outside the machine, rotary pumps have higher flow rates and reach full brew pressure faster than vibration pumps. Marc

Marc how to choose the correct temperature you want on your PID?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 года назад
Hi ie, Thanks for the question. So you use the chart in the manual to set the PID to produce a desired brew temp. Basic guide is a brew temp of between 195F/91C - 205F/96C. so 200F/93C is a good place to start. Beyond that it's generally in the cooler range for dark roasts and hotter range for lighter roasts. Hope that helps. Marc

Hi, is it possible to add flow control to these models? the one from the Lelit Bianca or the one you use on the Profitec? thanks!

@Wholelattelovepage 4 года назад
Hi ie, Thanks for the question. Yes, we have tested the Profitec and ECM flow control upgrade on Rocket Espresso machines with E61 group and they work! Unfortunately upgrade kits are currently out of stock due to supply/demand issues and slow downs in Italian manufacturing due to the pandemic. You can check back here for availability: www.wholelattelove.com/products/profitec-e61-flow-control-device Marc

Do you think a insulated HX with a PID would save energy vs one without a PID (or insulation) such as the Appartamento, I think it would since it's only applying as much heat as it needs to maintain the proper temp. An energy consumption comparison would be interesting, I don't think anyone's actually done that.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 года назад
Hi Ben, That would be interesting. My guess is you are correct as overall heating (as indicated by need for cooling flush) on non-PID machine like the Appartamento is higher. It's fair to assume it's using more energy. Marc

Hi Marc - Thanks for all the videos, they're really helpful. I do have a question on the need to purge PID controlled HX machines. While I don't doubt that the PID controller provides more stable control of the boiler temp (and by extensison the brew temp), it seems like the fundamental problem remains in that the brew water is sitting in a HX within the steam boiler that is way above brewing temperature (I realize this is a simplification, but it shouldn't matter). It also seems like by measuring the temp 20 seconds after flow starts, you're potentially masking the overheated starting temperature by effectively building a 20 second purge into your test before taking a measurement. Am I missing something? I think it would be much more informative to talk about the temperature profile throughout a 30 second brew rather than just one data point towards the end of the brew.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 3 года назад
Hi ii, Thanks for the question. These machines with E61 groups are constantly circulating water from the brew water section of the HX boiler out to the group and back. That water is cooled - gives up heat to the mass of the group then returns to the boiler. With that, the water in the HX section is much cooler and isolated from the steam producing section of the boiler. Key to that is a flow restrictor in the path of the thermosiphon. That controls flow rate out to the group and back when the machine is idle. When measuring temps with a Scace device we do have to pick a point to register temperature. What I'm looking for is the temperature when it reaches relative stability and how that compares to the PID set temp. Initially, temps are almost always low. We could graph the temp profile over time but know on this type of machine it's almost always going to be below the set temp initially. It takes time for the headspace between the group and simulated puck mass in the Scace to fill with brew water. Also takes some time for that brew water to heat the mass of the Scace. The Scace is preheated by being kept in the group prior to testing but is far below the set brew water temperature. Usually in the 180'sF. Hope that helps! Marc

Hi Philip, Tough choice! As you mention both are very capable machines. Think it comes down to your personal style preference. The Rocket is a bit more in your face w/branding. Personally I like the thick side panels of the Mozzafiato which include the cup rail. Marc

Can you adjust pre infusion on these machines?
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 года назад
Hi B, Thanks for the question. You can do a pre-infusion (I consider it pre-wetting as there's no real pressure behind it and limited flow) by raising the brew lever of the group to just before the pump comes on. That releases some brew water onto the puck. After that you can let it sit for as long as you like before raising lever to turn pump on. Another thing... as vibration pump machines brew pressure ramps up more slowly than on machines with rotary pump so that's an additional non-controllable pseudo pre-infusion. Marc

@Wholelattelovepage 4 года назад
Hi JJ, Thanks for the question. I'm not very familiar with what's available in your market. But, you have a decent grinder best value in an entry level machine is the Gaggia Classic. It's a true machine not an appliance grade product. There are many appliance grade espresso makers which use pressurized filter baskets. With those, espresso quality is not as good and the machines have limited lifespan and little repair ability down the road. They do allow for the use of pre-ground coffee so you don't need a grinder. Hope that helps! Marc Gaggia Classic: www.wholelattelove.com/products/gaggia-classic-pro

I have a sparkling brand new Rocket Mozzafiatto Evo R that I understand came out of the line recently. However I notice something I have never seen in any video featuring this machine. I see on the timer display a little sign that looks like a square wave, the type you see in oscilloscopes or heart monitors. The sign often goes away but just momentarily. It seems to be on most of the time. When I extract coffee it switches to the expected display of seconds to measure the length of the extraction. But once the extraction is completed, the display goes back to the intermittent display of the square wave. While displaying the square wave, I’ve taken a look at the PID temperature display. I have it programmed to 120 degrees Celsius. What I see is the PID reading fluctuating between 119 to 121. Most of the times is set to the programmed 120, but it may go up or down by one degree. Is this expected? Given that my machine came out hot out of the presses (it arrived yesterday, I understand it came practically direct from Milan), is this how the latest version of those displays (timer and PID) are supposed to behave? All the videos I’ve seen thus far about the Rocket Mozzafiatto Evo R with timer show a blank display on the timer until extraction time, when it displays the extraction length in seconds. And the PID displays the programmed temperature without fluctuations.
@Wholelattelovepage
@Wholelattelovepage 4 года назад
Hi C, Thanks for the question. I have seen the square wave in the display on one EVO R machine I have used.Then I had another that did not show it. When visible it's an indication that the boiler heating element is energized. So it comes on when heating element is on and goes away when the element is off. In PID machines once up to temperature the heating element energizes in short pulses to maintain a constant temperature so pulsing of the icon is normal. I suspect it may be possible to turn off the indication in Rocket Crhonometro machines but need to investigate further. Gicar PID displays common in other machines have a flashing dot indicating when the element is on. In my experience it's normal for the PID to fluctuate in temp by a degree or so in normal operation. Rest assured that fluctuation is orders of magnitude less than what one sees in machines with a pressurestat controlling boiler temps. Marc
