I just got mine seems very crisp and clear. Tight bass not too much sub bass depending on headphones and eq. Vocals are present and detailed without being overly bright. I absolutely love mine and pairs well with all my headphones. Thanks for the review.
One of the most in depth and practical reviews I've seen for any Amplifier, hell for about anything related to audio. Right now Schitt themselves have these on clearance as they are no longer producing them and it's an older product. As of this comment on 02/28/20 they have 33 units in all Black left and they have them priced at $149 USD. I was going to skip it and go for something newer but after this review I'm torn. My HE4XX are the most expensive headphones I own and I love their sound many reviewers have compared them to the HE400i and they've all described them as being similar with the 4XX being a little bit less piercing on the highs. To me they really don't ever get to what I would call piercing but you can hear a lot of detail with the mids being a little pushed back, nothing major and it isn't a deal breaker. I'm saying all this is hoped you'll see this comment even though it's been almost 4 years since you posted this review. I'm actually hoping you see it and would be able to kind of nudge me off the fence and if like me you think this Amp would be a great pairing with my 4xx. Anyway great review and thank you for doing it...
Good review. You describe the Asgard 2 well. I had a Mapletree Ear+HD tube amp that went bad and I bought an Asgard 2 as a temporary fix while my Mapletree was getting repaired. Ended up liking the Asgard 2 better with my headphones. Bought a new pair of Senn HD800S and the Asgard 2 stacked on top of a Bifrost Multibit really makes them sound beautiful. Plan on doing a major amp upgrade in the future to a Ragnarok or a Bryston. Not an easy decision though considering how good the Asgard 2 is performing. I am not aware of any HiFi component on the market that is a higher value than the Asgard 2. It would probably have a much better reputation if it costs three times as much.
That's such a great price! It's so worth it, ridiculous value! I got mine at $139, and I considered that a great deal. I think they're finally sold out...
+Amazing Andy Search up ASMR videos on RU-vid. You'll find many. I'm also surprised it comes out as stereo for my videos because I just use a Galaxy S6 to record with no external mic.
I want to hear this butt...ery tone. I think I’ll get one these. I’ve been waiting for the THX AAA 789 to become available but I would rather go with a Class A amp that has real parts inside and not running off opamps. I have a Magni 3 but I need something with a bit of weight to it so my Elear cable doesn’t move the amp every time I turn my head. This 5 LB amp should do the trick. And Made In USA is always nice.
Great Review, do you think this H.Amp is neutral and clean to use it for mixing and would be a great pairing for audeze LCD-X? also did u say the Magini 2 is more transparent??
I have a pair of AKG K712 and wants a good amp for them, would you recommend this amp? Or perhaps the Schiit Vali? I will mainly use them at home for critical listening.
Question: Can I use a 3.5mm to RCA cable adapter to plug my laptop (3.5mm jack) into the input RCA ports in the back? Or is it useless to use this with a laptop?
Hi - good overview man! I have a quick question for you about this amp. I recently pulled out my old AKG K601s which really have recessed but good bass, forward mids, but a high end that can be shrill at anything above the 11 o’clock position on my Schiit Magni. Because of my frustration with these headphones I just stored them and really didn’t use them. I’d like to get an amp that will warm these up. Do you think the Asgard 2 would do the trick? The AKGs are 160 ohm Thanks!
How would you describe the sub bass on this unit? I've been looking for an amp that emphasizes bass (for hip hop and drone metal) with my Senn HD 58x cans.
Do you have to switch it on and off every single time you turn on your computer? I'm planing to hook a pair of powered speakers on this and would be handy if it could stay on 24/7 without getting warm. Does the pre-amp outs offer a fixed output or does the knob adjust it as well? Thanks!
I could disregard the always on thing limitation by hooking it up on a UPS which would turn on and off the amp along with the PC but the pre-amp output is a dealbreaker for me.. Too bad there is no fixed output on those RCAs as I was hoping it would pair well with my B&W MM-1s. Anyway, thanks for your help and thumbs up for a great review and... ''slippery when wet'' album :)
Please answer my noob question I have HiFiMan 400i (couple of years now) and love them I just purchased FiiO X7 Mark II they sound great with the headphones however is the sound that much better to purchase this Asgard 2 with maybe Modi 2 or possible Bitfrost? The price will probably be about the same. Let's forget about one being portable and the other not portable. Mostly what I care about is best bang for your money
How does this one compare to the original Asgard amp in terms of sound? I've got an original Modi and Asgard combo and am wondering what would be a logical upgrade. I'm thinking Modi 2 Multibit for the DAC and either the Asgard 2, Lyr 2 or even the Mojlner 2 (sp?)
warc8us I'm waiting for some more information myself, but if it turns out to be as it's advertised then it's a great bang-for-your-bucks DAC/AMP combo.
Hello, which Schiit amp would you recomend to pair it with the HiFiMan 400i if looking for a relaxed, warm and detailed sound? Asgard 2, Lyr 2 or Valhalla 2? Thanks!
aornic Thanks. Sorry I missed that. One last question: Is the gap between HifiMan 400i + Cavalli Liquid Carbon and HiFiman 400i + Asgard 2 significant? Thanks.
I never got to try this with the Liquid Carbon so I can't say how it does as a pairing. That's also a warm amplifier, but I think the Asgard 2 might be more resolving.
How will this go with a HE-500? I'm on a fiio e12 now and looking forward to upgrading the amp. How would you say the jump on the low end, the bass department?
That's pretty much it actually. They pump out near identical power, with the Uber version of the Magni producing even more. Magni is more neutral sounding, perhaps even a little bright so I wouldn't recommend it for the likes of the Sennheiser HD800. Cheers.
Cool :) I was planning to go check it out and see how it compares to the Creative E5 that I own later when I have time for it. I saw it had alot of good reviews.
aornic You have a review on the 400i? I'm considering the 400i if I can find it at $200 or so used or $350 new. I'm considering the fidelio x2 as well, it's on sale for $248 on amazon.
