Review: Sigma 100-400mm f5-6.3 DG DN OS for Sony E-Mount 

I think this lens is perfect for landscape! For landscape I'd (personally) take the Sigma over the Sony anytime. It's so much lighter and fits in my outdoor camera bag much better. Optically I get the same performance when shooting landscapes.

I haven't been able to hear too much noise but I was outside for a majority of my time while using this lens!

Oof. I didn't hear any humming coming from the lens but I also did a majority of my shooting with this lens outdoors so I can't say it didn't exist for sure. I'd definitely send Sigma an e-mail and see if you got a bad copy.

Unfortunately the lens doesn't come with a tripod collar, you'd have to purchase that separately. The rental unit I pre-ordered from LensRental also did not have the tripod collar. I had the same apprehension about the lens mount strain before I received the lens but it's built very well and did not have me worried when mounting the camera onto the tripod. I would recommend buying the tripod foot since the lens did make my ballhead tilt slightly when mounting to the camera body. However, if you are simply walking around and not necessarily using a tripod, the lens is extremely comfortable to hold in the hands.

Yes, there is when you shoot it in APS-C crop mode, that's a difference of 300mm focal length. I shoot birds which was why I never touched the Canon EF 100-400mm II, is just not long enough when there are better alternatives out there. I am planning to upgrade next month, the reason I am considering to switch from Canon to Sony is exactly because of the Sony FE 200-600mm since I don't shoot with huge primes. Even more importantly, aside from the 600mm reach or 900mm in APS-C crop mode, the key thing to note is the Sony's far superior internal zoom design as compared to any other 400mm+ super zoom out there in the market. The FE 200-600mm has a much shorter throw, if I am not wrong it is only a 90 degrees turn to get from 200mm to 600mm. You can't do that with an external zoom, is an innate design issue when so much of the lens is retracted when not in use. Take the Sigma 150-600mm for example, it will take me 4 turns in shooting position to get from 150mm to 600mm. On top of that, the zoom ring is stiff even for the super expensive Canon RF 100-500mm where it has a smoothness adjustment ring to supposedly to make it less stiff. That would make it terrible for BIF shots. In my opinion, the Sony FE 200-600mm is without doubt the best super zoom in the market right now for birding. Just my two cents.

I'd generally stick to a 70-200 at f/2.8 aperture if possible for portraits and indoor sports!

Hi Sho! I haven't heard of this! I haven't done enough tests on a crop sensor camera to say anything definitively.

Great question! I'd check out the Sony 70-350 G lens since it's specifically designed for crop sensor cameras like your A6600! It's about half the weight of the Sigma and about two inches shorter.

I believe Brian meant the Sony SEL70350G E 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 for APS-C. There is a Sony 70-300G for full frame.

Definitely not as good as the Sony 100-400 GM but definitely possible. Close focusing distance is a bit farther but not bad and the fact this lens jumps to 5.6 and 6.3 so quickly might remove a lot of depth of field you might be looking for.

At the moment, Sigma's contractual agreement with Sony denies them the ability to create certain accessories like teleconverters for the E-Mount. This might change down the road if they change the contract. What Sigma has to say: "We develop lenses based on the E-mount specifications disclosed by Sony Corporation under a license agreement with Sony Corporation. Therefore, we do not develop accessories that are not based on it."
