I feel like this series is gonna give people all the facets of what makes Doctor Who, well, Doctor Who. A perfect jumping on point. Space Babies- fun. Devil’s Chord- camp. Boom- drama. 73 Yards- horror. Dot and Bubble- sci fi. Rogue- history. Legend/Empire- epic finale.
Gay Doctor in a kilt and an underage trans kid (played by a 20something man in a skirt). Yeah, that's exactly what I want from my Who. The sooner this rubbish is cancelled the better.

Nice! I was getting vibes that this episode was gonna be more like Partners in Crime in that it's about the dynamic between the doctor and companion and it's mostly just a fun episode even though it's not a groundbreaking episode. However hearing that pacing issues are still there is a bit of a downer. The pacing has been off in every episode except wild blue yonder so far and I really didn't want it to be something that sticks. It can really take away from the emotion of the scene when the pacing is so quick like that. I don't know if it's the way it's written, because to me it seems like an editing/directing choice. Like it's not written too quickly but the camera cuts too quickly between moments of dialogue. I wonder if it's an issue with the runtime...
@@GoliathWarfare True but the pacing/editing for me personally has almost always felt pretty professional before and although certain resolutions have been quick before I think it's the first time the editing is making the scenes not work. It's like they don't breathe enough.
@@kbg12ila well to be fair, he said only some of the pacing was off, fast at the beginning and slow in the middle. That doesn't sound nearly as bad as some of the recent episodes and that was his only criticism

After seeing the baby's talking CGI in the trailer, I was immediately reminded of Baby Geniuses. To be honest, I think they should've made the babies telepathic. No dodgy mouth CGI that way. Still excited for the new series though.
Usually I find in the show when The Doctor & the companion(s) have a great enough chemistry is when any issues with the episode itself get thrown out the window, especially any minor ones. So to hear from you how off the charts Ncuti & Millie’s is fills me with a sack full of confidence & excitement 👍🏻😁
Amazing that you got to watch the episode! I’m really excited for this series, I’m not really into DW delving into fantasy when Moffats run felt very fantasy sci fi-esque but other than that I feel like this new era is going to be fresh and unique! Also love that the producers shut down the agenda comment haha.
Can I just ask, you said review will be up when the episode is out? Do you mean midnight or 7pm or whatever time it finishes on BBC One! I'm not going to be watching till BBC One and need to know which channels to avoid!
as long as this dynamic is not a Doctor-Rose(T) and more of a Doctor-Donna, Doctor-Ace or Doctor-Bill one I'm sure I'll like it (I'm sure I'll like the majority of it but I really do hope that there's very little of the awkwardness that we got from 9-Rose, 10-Rose and 10-Martha etc)

@@hairofthedog92 I was despairing of the way so many young people today use American English, including the many examples of wrong grammar and sloppy sentence construction (not that "zed" is wrong per se). Americanisms have been regarded as "cool" by young people of several generations, mine included, but we used them knowingly. The two most pernicious Americanisms I notice these days are a) non-conjugation eg "there's lots of problems" and b) a very simplified limited vocabulary eg "very very fantastic/powerful/sick". I presume you didn't understand me. Americans don't speak English, they just use a lot of English words...
@@Pooter-it4yg Language adapts, changes, morphs with the generations. It's not only Americans who have begun to simplify grammatical structure, either. If you continue being a snob toward youth culture and belittling way they speak, you'll be perceived as pretentious and your outlook will hold no weight.

Sometimes though changes result in impoverishment of expression and ambiguity of meaning and there's nothing snobbish about objecting to that. In addition, there is the matter of language register. Simplification of grammar, as you forgivingly put it, has always appeared in casual discourse, but even in that setting the speaker/writer will be the one not universally taken seriously. Deleterious Inferences are drawn, like it or not. Conversely, those who don't "simplify" grammar are only regarded negatively if you regard being unfashionable as negative. Which would be reverse snobbery, wouldn't it? The day will certainly come that some modern usages will be absorbed more fully into all registers of language (as has always happened, and I've observed in my lifetime) but certainly not all and not for some time yet. However, returning to linguistic shift, there have been virtually no significant changes in grammatical usage since the mid 19th Century. The past few decades have seen a rapidly accelerating embrace of the vernacular but the non vernacular is still alive and well and certainly isn't regarded negatively or even seen as particularly formal.
This is good news, I think the lack of Chemistry with JW and her Crew was a factor. Get the Chemistry right and the danger for the companion seems to generate more "Omg is this it" as we saw with the Ponds and Clara. You know RTD is going to throw some Jaw droppers in along the way. I think the promotion of the new chapter has been perfect.
That era also distinctly lacked good character moments. I just rewatched a clip from Wild Blue Yonder where 14 is talking to the Not-Thing Donna about him not knowing where he’s actually from. That moment hits so darn hard it’s insane. The dialogue, the acting, everything. Chibnall’s era didn’t have a lick of that insightful and introspective character work. I do agree that Jodie lacked chemistry with all of her companions, but that’s just one factor of why that era didn’t work at all.

It wasn't a who thing, but if you're going to use woke just for bad writing, that's completely, and utterly, out of context for what woke is.
Great review! I was also there last night, only just managed to grab an extra free ticket that morning thanks to BAFTA Cymru tweeting about it. It was a fun event, really enjoyed watching the episode with an audience, all laughter and jump scares throughout! That Q+A got real awkward towards the end, no thanks to the NMD you mentioned. Complaining to the creatives that William Hartnell was no longer the First Doctor, then Executive Producer Phil Collinson was sat in the audience in front of him, turned around and insisted to him that Bill was absolutely still the First Doctor. 😂 It was absolutely cringe inducing, I was near the back and I heard several people trying to suppress their laughter and even heard two guys behind me whispering under their breath “…JFC”. That guy got a free ticket and nothing else better to do for that evening but complain to the crew members in front of an audience, embarrassing. Nevertheless, it didn’t ruin the whole evening, Steffan Powell did very well and they all moved on. Drinks and chatting afterwards was a bonus, it was great spotting some familiar faces in the Who fan community! Great job!
I love making people feel awkward by telling the truth too 😂 that’s all that person was doing. 99% of the fandom don’t like the timeless child nonsense and they voiced it. It made everyone uncomfortable, of course, but worth it 😎

I went to see it too, here's my thoughts: DOCTOR WHO EPISODE 1 SPOILER FREE REVIEW (nothing to do with plot) Okay, so just finished the first episode of the new series. (Bare in mind this was at a cinema so it was a bit enhanced) The first 10 minutes blew me away, I was like damn this is like 10/10 so far. The writing was spot on and the Ncuti and Millie were unbelievable. About 15 minutes in, the first problem happened. There was a part that was copied and pasted from 'The End of the World' episode with Christopher Eccleston. I thought maybe it was just a little reference, but as the scene continued, the more I was like yeah this is just a copy and paste. The episode continues and there's parts where Ncuti is playing Eric, like straight up it was like watching Sex Education, didn't feel like the doctor (only certain parts, he also had scenes he did really well). I was hoping political messaging would be very subtle, and it was up until around 20 minutes in. The actual political message wasn't the issue, again, same problems as before, it was how it was handled. Which was very in your face. There was also a few times where people insinuated swearing, even the doctor almost swore which I thought was very out of character (but that's just personal preference) They also triple down on something that was introduced in Jodie's era (I'm not saying directly but I'm sure you know what I'm referring to) it's mentioned multiple times and even in the interview after, the producers said they're not backing out on it and it's here to stay. The set design, special effects, props and overall production and the most standout part for me, the music, was amazing. Murray Gold truly hit it out of the park again with this one. It gave me goosebumps at one point. Overall, I gave it a 7/10 while my brother gave it a 6.5/10. solid but RTD falls into the same problems as the 60th and Christmas special.
Ah that's a shame. Hopefully it's still enjoyable and the plot is well done for example. I did like Wild Blue Yonder a lot. Can I just ask what the political message for this episode is? Like I don't really see what kind of message an episode of space babies would have haha! 😅

I'm sorry but if this is the way Doctor who was going.I fear spears future that first episode I have just watched on bc was awful.I have seen the second episode.I didn't mind the second one to start with.Until the awful ending god help us all

@TheConfusedAdipose is it similar to 9/10th Doctor’s intro where we have a slightly different colour scheme for the logo, for example with 9’s logo it was a rose gold colour whereas with 10’s was fiery and flame like. As well as the different flying TARDIS angles and an updated theme tune.
