I don’t know whether my Hussite heritage played a part in this, but Husitska moved me to tears. The performance is an absolute thriller! Thank you, Dave, for drawing our attention to this splendid new recording!
Just listening to it for the second time. I'm so glad they put some solid engineering behind this cycle. When a conductor takes such loving attention over the piece, you want a detailed soundstage to reveal it. This really is turning into an unexpected pleasure.
Inkinen was the Prague Symphony Orchestra’s MD for a few years. Perhaps that partly explains why this CD is so good? It’s a shame that he didn’t do any recordings when he was in Prague (I am looking at you, Supraphon!).
Thanks for the great review, Dave. I was unaware that Inkinen had picked up the SWR label's Dvorak cycle, and had wondered whether it had been discontinued. Dvorak's Symphony No. 6 is one of my very favorites, and I can't wait to hear this recording of it!
This is my favorite installment from this series so far! I remember you saying in your previous review that Inkinen is a slightly more exciting conductor than Chichon, and I wholly agree. This performance of the sixth symphony demonstrates it, it's glorious. And as far as I'm concerned, the tempo of the Furiant is absolutely spot-on.
That's all I need to hear! Buying this STAT‼️ I played the Hussite Overture in All Southern California Honor Orchestra, under Denis de Coteau, in 1979. It has been my favorite ever since. I bought the Kubelik on vinyl right away and then on CD when they arrived on the scene. You rarely wax so wildly about a recording, and I'm very excited to hear this. Thanks, Dave.
Denis de Coteau - there's name you don't hear much anymore. Gave me an afternoon conducting lesson in 1980 at the Flagstaff Summer Music Festival. Wonderful musician and all around great guy!
Your enthusiasm for Pietari Inkinen has made me very curious about his Complete Sibelius Cycles. Seems he's done it with both the Japan Phil. and the New Zealand Symphony. Your reviews are the first I've heard of this conductor.
How does this stack up against the really excellent live Mackerras/Czech Phil please, Dave? I recall you gave that (deservedly) the raviest of rave reviews.
Thanks for this Dave. I purchased the Ancerl Dvorak 6 based on recommendations here, and I love it -- but the sound quality is not the best in mono. . I was looking for a modern 6th with great sonics! I will purcchase it.
@@DavesClassicalGuide I'm listening again, the Suraphone :Gold" Edition, recorded 1966 and it good. I think I listened to it right after the spectacular Salonen/LA Philharmonic/ Sibelius Lemminkanen Legends recording that you recommended- the one with the incredible bass and snare drums. That had to be one of the top 5 recorded discs in terms of sound quality ever- I was comparing the two. They arrived on the same day.
Great to see you so fired up and enthusiastic about this one! I'd really appreciate it if you could share your thoughts on the Halle Orchestra/Mark Elder's new Elgar Symphonies please.
They aren't that new, are they? Unless he has done them again since I reviewed them for ClassicsToday.com. The First was better than the Second. Here is my review of the latter: www.classicstoday.com/review/review-10963/?search=1
@@petertaplin4365no, you're not mistaken. The ones you're thinking of were 2005 ish. The new ones (although recorded a few years back) are indeed different performances.
@@lucbenac9756 I have listened to that disc, with the 7th and 8th, it is also very good. Only problem: they put the mic too close to a cellist and you hear him breathing sporadically through the recording.
@@DavesClassicalGuide To be fair, by necessity, I'm doing 90% of my listening on headphones. Recording issues are far more noticeable there than on speakers. That said, the rest of the recording is spotless: very dynamic and the solos in this series are the best I've heard on Dvorak recordings yet.
