Very good, thorough review of the OK4. I love this knife! I like it better than the Mora Companion HD and the Mora Robust Pro. I don’t use the nylon belt sleeve though. I carry it Mors Kochansky style around my neck with a piece of paracord by unsnapping the button flap and making a simple larks head knot through the top of the button slot and then snapping the flap closed. This is a very secure way to carry the knife and it’s always handy when you need it.

Cool. Mors was an awesome man, he is missed. Sadly, I get a load of comments whenever I review a neck knife that amount to "never carry a full size knife that way". My guess is that those people are city folk who have never done any bushcraft type tasks in their life and have never hiked off trail either (not that I do much of that with my bad kneed, but I had a full knee replacement since making this video and I am able to do more and more every month).

@@CanadianCuttingEdge As long as the knife is under 6 ounces or so it’s a very convenient way to carry your knife, especially in the winter when you are wearing a long coat or parka it is inconvenient to be constantly taking your knife in and out of the sheath on your belt. By wearing it around your neck you are not tempted to set it down somewhere and lose it. People don’t realize how easy it is to lose your knife in deep snow but Mors knew that better than anyone.

Great review mate. I love my OK4 I agree with you it has a winning handle, great blade shape/length and sheath is just perfect for me. It's a light weight and brutally strong knife...though the SK5 steel loses it's edge rather quickly but sharpens really quickly as well. It's equal to it's rival the Bushcraft Black for sure.

Nice budget friendly bushcrafter. If it came just a little longer like the Mora Bushcraft Black, it would be perfect. I like the extra blade length, but this would surely do the trick..a bit less money than the Mora Bushcraft model. Nice!

Just bought one a week ago on Amazon for $22. Let me start the edge needed a little refinement. Other then that this is a 10. This is a hidden jem. I can't say enough. My favorite outdoor knives for real survival are this Hultafor OK4, BPS adventurer, mora Garberg, last a mora companion. If it was good enough for Mors kochanski who am I to argue. My experience goes back from boy scouts then army Rangers. I was part of Ranger school, first Florida then Utah then Texas/New Mexico. So I'm experienced in extreme cold the high mountains and the swamps of Florida to the woods in North East. Anyway my point I'm making is a survival knife is the one you have on you. So it's best to carry a knife and know it's strengths and weaknesses. Everything you see about big knives is marketing. Anyway this is a knife I can't recommend enough.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge Год назад
In principle I agree with you, just not that literally everything about big knives is marketing, just the VAST majority of it. Mors is dearly missed by the outdoor survival and enthusiast community.

Hey Jake! Good review of a great knive. The handle , the grippy material, is it the same as what's being used by Steel Will? I have a Druid and the handle on it is really super grippy.

Your theory on sharpening scandi's looks correct. But if you sharpen a saber grind or full flat, you're getting thicker and thicker behind the grind, unless you continually remove blade stock as well. Seems like you'd be removing less material on a true scandi to keep the original grind.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 6 лет назад
Yes. I don't know of anybody who thins down their full flat or sabre knives, it's just not something that is done with any degree of regularity. and yes, with that the thickness behind the grind goes up. BUT - it is also is something that nobody in North America (except a couple of us) seem to be concerned with at all. Nobody would ever think of trying to maintain the thickness behind the grind on a full flat or sabre grind. (Which on a Scandi is the thickness of the blade...) So IF we were doing as you are talking then yes it would be less material to remove on a scandi than the others, but that simply isn't reflective of how the vast majority of people approach the issue. So, my comments are in the context of how the majority of people approach the issue. I have thought of making a video showing how Scandi grind at 20 degree per side has a SUPER THICK thickness behind the grind compared with a full flat grind or sabre profiled knife. And then showing that real Scandi with its 12 degree per side grind is different. I think a lot of people are not aware of the difference. I had one guy try to tell me that Scandi grind knives are stupid because they are just big knives without a main bevel, just a final grind that goes up too far. Some people just don't think things through.

Based on your review I purchased this knife from Big Bear Tools. When received it was a concern that the knife did not arrive in the original packaging and was wrapped in packaging paper. Good price though at $32 Cdn. Tried to cut paper with the OK4 and found out it was shipped very blunt compared to the Mora I recently purchased. So I reprofiled on my whetstones to a true Scandi grind and now almost as sharp as the Mora. So if you are willing to do some work on the OK4 you are shipped, a good purchase.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 2 года назад
It sounds like Big Bear Tools may have sold you a returned knife that had been used before the customer returned it. I STRONGLY suspect that is what happened. I have had a few Hultafors and they always came fairly sharp out of the box.
@vincenzocomments980
@vincenzocomments980 2 года назад
Gives me a chance to practice my sharpening skills. :) I removed the coating from the bevel and have sharpened it sufficiently. Will be taking it to a high polish. You made some excellent points about sharpening a Scandi Grind. Overall with the modifications to the bevel, I'm quite happy with the knife. I really like the handle. If you ever have the opportunity to review a knife from BPS (made in Ukraine) would like to hear your thoughts.
@MadM0nkey

Not sure why the Hultafors website says OK4 is 2.5 mm thick and OK 1 is 3 mm thick...u reckon they might've changed the specs? Also, regarding sharpening scandis, I think I've seen a similar vid from, IIRC, Kyle Noseworthy. I had wondered at that time also about scandis with a secondary bevel (Mora Bushcraft black, terava jakaaripuuko etc). What would your advice be for sharpening that sort of a blade?
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 5 лет назад
I don't know if they have changed their specs or not. I talk a little bit about that in my recent video on the 6 common types of grinds. What I do is when I buy a scandi ground knife the first 3 or 4 times that I sharpen it I do a micro-bevel sharpening. After doing that 3 or 4 times then the next sharpening is to take steel off of the entire face of the scandi bevel all the way to a nice clean zero bevel. then the next 3 or 4 sharpenings after that I do a micro-bevel and that is the cycle that I do. Does that make sense? Email me if you have more questions on that - canadiancuttingedge AT gmail.com

Are you not fond of Scandi grind? I like both types of grinds. The full flat or saber is the more general purpose (which is useful) than the scandi but the scandi can be such a superb bushcrafting blade, I doubt the scandi grind will ever go away.

@EattinThurs61 6 лет назад
kidbach here in scandinavia they look normal. Scandi grind, as you call it, is the best for woodcarving. This one had a micro bevel so it is not a pure Scandic grind. For finer works in wood a Mora 2 is the best or by a Finnish short carbon steel blade from Lamnia and make your one knife. Stacked Birch bark is a nice material...

Certainly in Europe is cheaper than US and I got one to compare it with my Morakniv collection. The handle is great because on the extremes have a hard polymer and the rest is rubberized and give a good and ergonomic grip and it is big enough for my middle size hands. The handle is very comfortable when compared with the full hard polymer of i.e. Morakniv Garberg. On the other hand the blade size is small if compared with the Morakniv models more oriented to bushcraft, to be honest I was disappointed with such small blade if compared with the proportion of the handle. The biggest negative point is that the blade was not sharp at all and I was not able to cut anything with the factory edge. Other negative point is that you cannot buy it with stainless steel only carbon. The sheet has a good ramp to extract the knife but certainly is cheap solution, not better than Morakniv. The measurement rule on the blade is totally useless as most likely will disappear with coding after the knife use. Maybe this brand is good for working tools and utilitarian knifes but for buschcraft or outdoors forget about it, buy a Morakniv. I will use it for tasks where I won't mind to destroy the knife. Morakniv shall learn a bit with the handle, nothing else I could see that might be better not even the price, I will have a better sharp tool with an Opinel for less than the half price.

@@CanadianCuttingEdge you're welcome. It really isn't how sharpening works. My brain about dumped on the floor, nobody does that, or accidentally does that. The whole bevel is a plane that's cut and moves up. Thanks for the laff.
@krekmanski

The sharpening explanation is completely wrong. NOBODY sharpens their knives at a different angle each time. EVERYBODY sharpens their knives at a certain angle so you don't get a flat edge at the end but rather you reshape the edge and each time you sharpen your knife you HAVE to take more and more steel in order to keep that angle that you are used to and to make it as sharp.
@CanadianCuttingEdge
@CanadianCuttingEdge 4 года назад
Factories, especially on budget knives have a VERY wide variety of angles of the final grind. In fact, I have been measuring every knives I have reviewed in the last year and every time the grind angle is different on one side than it is on the other side, and often along one side the grind angle can change radically. This is because of how they sharpen knives: freehand on a rotating wheel. You can watch my video on how I measure the angle here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xpvY01UqbtM.html My spreadsheet where I record my findings is here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1fADjKRpMBwNH-B9NZVEGo1U_z6BhZaEwHJpyEtA1YrA
