Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. If your into being off-grid and boondocking, or doing dispersed camping whenever possible then you'll appreciate the discussions on batteries, solar panels and solar chargers or power stations and 12v refrigeration. Come on along, we're happy to have your company!

@@gonagain Check out the Tacklife 100 watt panel on Walmart. Looks just like the Jackery with ETFE coating and SunPower cells but very inexpensive. I bought one and it powers a USB fan or light if I simply open the door underneath the carport and aim it toward the sunlight hitting the yard 20 feet away.

Pretty slick outfit. I was just musing the other day how in the 70s I remember reading where they had found out how to have the sun excite a cell and it would make a tiny amount of electricity.

I really like the aesthetics of this panel- but would Linda let you put it on her kitchen counter??? Seriously, thanks for review. I’m trying to navigate the (steep for me) learning curve of solar power technologies, but it’s difficult when I’m starting with almost no practical knowledge of the electrical system in our house beyond where the “fuse box” is in our garage. Some days it feels like all I’m learning about electricity is how much I don’t know about electricity!🌿🌿🌿

Nice review, solid panel. Those cells are Sunpower, top of the line cells, you can tell because there are no wires showing across the face of them, that a patented feature of Sunpower cells. All panels use a STC rating which is a laboratory test of each cell and then they add them up and that’s your panels wattage with a tolerance like 0/+3 or -3/+3 watts. PTC is real world or practical output which has too many factors to predict like sun angle, humidity, altitude, temperature and wire (length and gauge) so as they say you’re mileage will vary.

I've tried wind power many years ago on a sailboat and when I watch today's reviews on them I see the same problem I had and that's noise and vibration. I think they would be fine if they are away and separated from your rig, but if they attached to it then they might bother your sleep. Slim Potatohead tried one and had that problem also. I'd be willing to try one to see if modern tech has smoothed them out any.

Good review. The panel looks good. Like a Jackery panel in blue. Was hoping there was a little more of a price difference with this panel and the Jackery. All of it made in China. From experience, Jackery has good customer service. I wonder what the customer service and possible warranty replacement from this company would be like. Did you ever review Dokio panels? I have a Dokio 100 watt panel and I feel it is a good value.
@gonagain

I haven't gotten my hands on a Dokio panel yet. I have the 100 watt Jackery panels and they are no where's near as efficient as this Xtar panel. I checked one side by side with an Itehil panel with these same Sunpower cells as the Xtar and the Jackery panel only put out half the wattage. Look up my Itehil review for that and you'll see.

@gonagain

All solar panels need good sun to work, but you will still get some power from them. This panel is still the best performing panel that I have and does better than 120watt panels.
@earlsmithers8987
@earlsmithers8987 Год назад
Well, mine is a year old and the best I can get for watts is 78. So either something is wrong with it or the panels degrade fast.
@gonagain
@gonagain Год назад
78 watts isn't bad at all, but it needs to be a clear day with direct sun and without any haze to see it's full potential. It also needs to be pointed carefully directly at the sun to get the full wattage. It takes years of use for them to degrade to any extent.

I am so far from getting solar it isn't funny. I hope to have about 1000 watts split between two bluetti's all on top of my 16 foot cargo trailer and with luck should have 400 watts charging to each Bluetti. I am also thinking of putting a rack on my truck and try and get another 800 watts for when I use my 12 foot cargo trailer with this set up I should get 700 watts of charging and swap from one Bluetti to the other. and when I put the battery bank in the 16 footer it'll give me 700 watts to charge that from the truck but untill I get set up a gas Generator will have to do the job of the solar. I don't have a lot to run lights , Fridge , cpap and will be adding a window unit and that will run off the Generator remember I am in the 90's to 100's here so that's a must. I am looking to use 200 or 250 watts panels. It was a lot cheaper before my wife got into camping with me but I still enjoy having her with me just so I know someone still wants to nag at me lol. Take care and stay safe.

This review was about the solar panel, not so much how to use them, but something I always worry about with portable panels is the visibility of them sitting on the ground. In a crowded campground, small and low panels can be driven over by an RV with low visibility in the back. You could also have them knocked down by kids on bikes (who don't care about campsite lines). I would use some orange flags on 4 foot sticks behind my portable panels to make them more visible.
@gonagain
@gonagain 3 года назад
I also worry about theft, but this panel is so easy to deploy that I just take it in if we're leaving the camp to run an errand.
@jwagnermail
@jwagnermail 3 года назад
@@gonagain Maybe there is a solution to both issues. If you built some sort of folding rack on the front of your tow vehicle, you can lock the portable panel (a cheap bike lock), and you would be high enough that nobody will drive over the panel. This will require you to position the front of the truck into the sun, then switch direction in the afternoon. A little fussy, but I think worth the trouble in campgrounds where theft and random drivers are an issue.
@gonagain
@gonagain 3 года назад
That's actually a good idea. You could also put a panel of this size inside the front window, like a sunshade, if the temperatures aren't too hot.
@jwagnermail
@jwagnermail 3 года назад
@@gonagain Or build a folding rack that will hold the portable panel over the outside of the front window. This will work better for keeping heat outside (the hot panel will be outside the vehicle), it will be up away from getting hit by a car or bike, and it can be secured with a lock. I guess you will not worry about heat from the panel on a cold day, so inside the windshield works better when you can use some heat in the car. One other advantage - a panel that is secured to a rack will not fly away in a sudden wind gust.
@ddt6304
