Review: What's bad about the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan ?

The good points are easy to find but what about the bad? If you are thinking of buying a Volkswagen Tiguan then these are the things I have come across having driven 3 versions for 50,000 miles. Covers an owners review of the 2016, 2017 and 2018 VW Tiguan (TDI)

No problem.. the 2.0tdi 4 motion is the best one. We currently have the 1.5 tsi 150 on a 2020 and its a total dog. No torque, slow..gas guzzler...awful engine, 2wd is useless in the wet.

Have a 2019 R line absolutely brilliant vehicle, have not had any of these faults so am sure you will be very happy with your new model.

My 2016 Tiguan 2 is Fabarooney. Just completed 60K and still on original rear tyres with still 3mm tread. Only issue is that front sensor/brakes slam on, its ride quality is lovely. highly recommended

Front sensors get disabled in strong tain too...

Same issue here! Had the brakes slam on a plain sailing day. Nothing in front!

Hi, I’ve got one of these. Fuel filler yes a bit of a pain as I put in redex every 3 months. Plastic pipe adaptor off eBay opens it. Some manufactures put on in the boot, windscreen sensor fails in really heavy rain and will turn off cruise control. Sat nav takes you round the whole world and down stupid narrow country lanes to get somewhere and start stop is brake pedal sensitive. I turn mine off I don’t like it as you said you go for a gap and there’s a delay. BUT I love my R line. Loads of toys. Lovely to drive, my phone connect quick and get the 190 bhp, Get extended warranty cus everything is electronic

Just found your video. I've had a 2018 for two years. I agree with you totally. It's a good car, and I'm reluctant to spend money changing it. But user-friendly - it is NOT. On top of the stupid annoyances you mention, try disconnecting the radio when you just want the Satnav without any radio. It took ages to find out simply how to use this Nav, when I had no trouble with two previous Satnavs. Still haven't mastered it. The idea seems to have been to make you perform at least three potentially dangerous operations in order to execute just one.

To be fair to the sat nav, there is several black spots in Cornwall that tricks most sat navs.

It's not _that_ bad when compared to my 2009 Tiguan. Stiill those things you mentioned would also frustrate the hell out of me !

I forgot to mention the re-located front assist sensor. It's now behind the front logo, and likes to jam the brakes on randomly, when going round a bend. I have disengaged mine for the moment (I won't say how), but now can't use the Cruise Control. So something will have to be done - at cost.

@@Logrouo You mean, how have I disabled it? Lump of steel wool in front of sensor, behind front logo. But now the Cruise control will not work, which is not what you want from a quite expensive car!

It was the wifes and the amount of water that poured in, dust was the least of the worries.

I got 17 plate AWD for over 3 years and i never had any of those issues. Satnav is just as good as my Garmin , gives me 3 options of route absolute on spot . My phone connects instantly never hangs up ....maybe you have just bad luck ?

Dont know, but the 2020 version I have is equally as pants.. last 3 out for postcodes I searched it couldnt find. Also keeps saying the route goes via an unmade road...which it doesnt.

I have 2017 2.0 SEL and it has none of these issues just loads of other ones like the fans not turning off and frying the relay and draining the battery and many other electrical issues

The fan not turning off is an absoute pain on most VWs of that age.. right from 2010. Its a dodgy thermostat. Screws the battery

Battrery died on my tiguan 2018. Changed it and all sorts of fault came up. found out i no longer had front lights, day time running lights, indicators not working, all in the front only. Took it to the dealers and Some eletrical box got burnt for some reason while change of battery. Yet its such an easy thing to change. cant use the car until they have that piece back in stock. Very annoying.

Always take out the red connector before the black when disconnecting battery, the reverse when re-connecting with black on first before red.

start stop over ride is on the passenger side of the shifter, press to turn off .

I found a harness that I was able to plug in-line with the button so it stays in the last position when you restart the vehicle. If it was turned off on the last drive it defaults back to off rather than on. It was around $59. This was on a mk7 Jetta but it may work for Tiguan as well. Just google VW start/stop harness.

Only when its pouring down rain. As soon it stops it works fine. You just need to pay a bit more attention to road for a bit. There are covers i think available not sure. Have research. But 17 plate AWD Tiguan drive smooth, it look sexi, lights satnav you can switch from main to behind the wheel screen. Amazing car.

Just been using a 2022 version and its now a much better car. 1.5 petrol engine is an absolute torqueless gas guzzling dog though, so bad even the VW dealers didn't want it back! it went to auction.

A fuel can will work if you use the right nozzle 🙄. That's there to stop idiots putting the wrong fuel in.

I have a 1.5 tsi. And it judders in gear 1 and gear 2. Gear 2 in low speed literally shifts zero power.

Wow! is there anything that you actually like 😂 if you don’t like it or fault it so much, why get another? I have a R line can’t fault it. Think you need to look for a different brand, as I don’t think VW is for yourself

Overall its a good car, but my point is VW do some pretty dumb things that could so easily be fixed. I still have two of them and they have noe fixed most of those bugs. Ill do another video on the TSI which is a dog of an engine 🤣

Nice car to drive while you still have warranty, after that good luck to you. My sister had one, a few weeks after warranty she had a check light, her mechanic could find the fault so back to dealer and it was ABS system fault, $3k. Then the air conditioner was dead, $2k and 4 weeks wait for parts from France, and on and on...I bought a Tiguan at the same time, no major issues. With German cars at least all common faults are known and you can take preventative measure, with French cars anything can go wrong!
