Zvezda make a ZSU-23-4 Shilka kit for their Hot War game, but it is great for Team Yankee as well. Join me as I build one of these great little kits step-by-step. As well as looking at the finished kit, we take a look at the Shilka's history and how they were used to provide close-in air defence for Soviet tank and motor rifle battalions.

I just bought this kit as well as 4 other Zvezda kits. I am a noob when it comes to this hobby so I appreciate the detailed instructions you provided. I just subscribed and can't believe how much work you put into these videos. You deserve millions of subs! Be safe!

Glad you enjoyed it. I love Zvzeda kits too, and the Shilka particularly.

Nice looking kit. I just bought 4 Shilkas from Battlefront for my Israelis in Oil War.

My Soviet force Shilkas are all Zvezda plastic. I love them.

Just built a second one of these ready for the release of the new Starter Box and Soviet Army box for Team Yankee. The gun assembly is a bit fiddly but all goes together nicely. As I am not bothered about raising/lowering the gun I glued it all in place and have the 'flap' glued on top. I think that without glue the little 'spacer' between the top and bottom barrels will fall off and get lost in no time.
@FogofWar
@FogofWar 4 года назад
Yes. I ended up gluing the top flap down on later ones. I haven't had any issues with losing the gun connector, but I'm pretty gentle with them.

That is a neat model of the Shilka and it captures the complex look of the real thing. thanks for sharing this.

I build two of these now. The finished model looks great. But the build was a bit annoying - much pressure needed to reduce the gaps - and the plastic was very soft. Removing flash and sprue gates left overs wasn't fun. Will see how the painting process will be. I let you know.
@FogofWar

Zvezda's plastic is very different to modern model plastic. Softer and more toy-like. But once you get used to working with it, it is OK.

@@FogofWar Plastic took paint good. But I have to say that the details are very shallow. (Except the road wheel details. These are great.) Cut the cables on the side off on one vehicle. Overall I wasn't that satiesfied when I finished painting them as being part for my syrian force. But the guys on Insta liked it. Got the most likes in a short time and is my No. 2 when it comes to likes. Maybe didn't everything wrong. 😉

I like the Zvezda WW2 kits and am using them to fill the gaps in the Tanks range from GF9. I cannot find anyone making a Hetzer 1/100 in plastic, so that would be on my wish list.
@FogofWar
@FogofWar 6 лет назад
A Hetzer in plastic would be nice. Just not very likely, I think.
@ledichang9708
@ledichang9708 5 лет назад
It would be a niche kit with zero utility. Can't think of anyone other than Zvezda who might make it for giggles.

Most of my larger lists shilka makes up 50-75% of my AA defense. With gopher and gaskins being the rest.

They are useful - and nice to have in plastic.

I'm struggling to decide between going Soviets or Czechs at the moment for Team Yankee, any advice would be appreciated. I have to say this is a great review of the Shilka and I think I'll opt for this instead of Battlefront's offering.
@FogofWar
@FogofWar 4 года назад
I have been happy with my plastic Shilkas, so hopefully they do well for you. As for advice, I have only played Soviets. However I think Blitz & Peaces had several battle reports with a Czech force. Maybe seeing it on the table will help.

@@FogofWar Thank you for your reply and fingers crossed they serve me well. Since my post I've now settled on a Soviet force. Admittedly I'm still struggling on the developing a list but I'm currently leaning towards a 50 point list with T-64's as a backbone which I'll use to build from.
@FullmetalTimo
@FullmetalTimo 6 лет назад
Do you have a comparsion for the BF model? I heard that the BF models in general are a little bigger and more detailed then the PSC or Zvezda models (saw a video about the T64´s that are noticeable smaller then the BF ones, so i wouldnt want to get them). I dont own BF Shilka yet, but im planning on buying some, but they re resin models and i hate working with Resin, so plus for Zvezda.
@FogofWar
@FogofWar 6 лет назад
I only have the plastic Zvezda Shilkas. I don't have a BF one to compare it to. But I have been very happy with my plastic ones.
@ledichang9708

www.breakthroughassault.co.uk/zvezda-modern-soviets-review/ Breakthrough Assault says otherwise. I think one of the other bigger FoW blogs put a Zvezda Shilka with BF one side by side and they were basically the same scale other than Zvezda one had fiddly guns.

@@ledichang9708 Yes, this is correct, they're both 65mm long.

Do you think it competes with Battle Front at the price point level? I thought it a shame Zvezda priced their cold war models as they did, but I suppose they were factoring in the more complicated moulds?
@FogofWar
@FogofWar 6 лет назад
In Australia they are about equivalent, and I prefer plastic, so Zvezda wins for me. Plus I buy them one st a time when I have a few dollars spare.
@ledichang9708
@ledichang9708 5 лет назад
Funny enough here in Japan it's cheaper for me to buy res-metal ones from UK than Zvezda plastic... Except once in a while Amazon will have them super cheap (like 3 dollars apiece).

May get this kit for my East German's but I'm kinda holding out that PSC will make a box so I can get 4-5 in one go

Yeah may just get a few of these and maybe the TY box and see what I like more, but I'll probably like the zvezda kit as I'm not a fan of resin metal hybrids
@ledichang9708
@ledichang9708 5 лет назад
If PSC was going to make a GM chassis utility kit next year you would have heard about it now. Considering the PSC didn't even make their own early war Stug even though they had a kit already, I doubt you will see a plastic Shilka anytime soon.

Advice needed, should I start TY Canadians, British or West Germans?
@FogofWar
@FogofWar 6 лет назад
This depends on you and your play style. I play British and now Australians. This suits my defensive play style. Plus I like the British equipment, and British infantry with Milans is hard to beat. West Germans are meant to be good, but I haven't played them or the Canadians, so I can't be much help.
@chrisebz6473
@chrisebz6473 6 лет назад
West Germans are an aggressive mobile defense. You generally have the fewest units on the table. The leopard 2 is strong and doesn't suffer too much from moving and shooting while also having good armor so moving around and keeping t55s and t72s at arm's length is generally what I see. Your helis only carry tow missiles, no guns, so they can become vulnerable at times. I'd say the play style is somewhere between Americans and British.
@chrisebz6473
@chrisebz6473 6 лет назад
If you go the Leo 1 route with the west German expansion pamphlet its more an ambush style of play where you use terrain to your advantage
