Reviewing every Emma adaptation (in the last 25 years)

Before social isolation, there were movie theaters. Back at the beginning of March, Mikaela and I were lucky enough to see the new Emma (2020) directed by Autumn de Wilde before Florida’s safer-at-home measure was enacted. We enjoyed it and it prompted us to watch every film (and the BBC's 2009 miniseries) adaptation in the last 25 years because I love Jane Austen and that’s a totally normal reaction for me and my girlfriend is indulgent.
We watched: Clueless (1995), Emma (1996), Emma (also 1996), BBC's Emma (2009), and Emma (2020).

I think the best part is how matter-of-fact she is. Like, the eventual uprising of the impoverished masses is just common knowledge and to say otherwise would be foolish in her eyes. She's right of course, which only makes it better.

The 2020 version's dance sequence was amazing. I particularly loved how the attraction between Emma and Knightley was made so obvious and how immediately after that dance, they both knew something had permanently changed in their relationship. That part where Knightley runs to her house and Emma comes down to meet him was riveting. And the way the movie used Harriet's comments about Knightley as the catalyst for all the miscommunication between Emma and Knightley later on made it even better.

There's a RU-vid Emma adaptation called Emma Approved that you might be interested in. It's made by the same people who made the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, a lovely adaptation of P&P and one of my favorite things on RU-vid

Omg I was literally going to mention that! Emma Approved has perhaps my favourite Emma! While it's very cheesy and a low budget webseries and like? it's definitely not Perfect, I think the lead actress really holds the whole thing together. While I dont' know that I love the knightly, I think the Emma Approved Emma is maybe my favourite Emma?? Like maybe I need to do a rewatch and I haven't read the book either. I also haven't seen the 1996 Adaption (I've seen clueless though, the 2009 one and the 2020 one). But the webseries Emma is just so... like she's manipulative and sure of herself and demanding and... It's like she knows she's manipulating people but she thinks it's okay because she feels she knows better than them. She's incredibly likeable and charming and like just cute and you really feel for her when everything comes back to bite her and I just ADORE that Emma. For a while I was super into watching those literary webseries and that was one of my favourites!

This was really fun to watch, you two had interesting things to say and were of course adorable as usual. And I was SO pleased when you brought up Paige's interpretation because when I listened to the audiodrama adaptation narrated by Emma Thompson, I REALLY got the sense that Emma's in love with Harriet but doesn't recognize that. It definitely made me a LITTLE more able to swallow some of her less likable moments. I really should give this story another try, and you've given me some great options.

2009 is my favorite. But I'm biased towards Johnny Lee Miller. I feel the chemistry they have at the beginning very much mirrors exactly what they are, lifelong friends who are in some ways are the least ridiculous in their families. And I like the portrayal of Knightley as personable. The scene you clipped and the WTF is so hilarious. Mark Strong I felt was too... Rochester... and shouty. His anger at the haircut was a lot. And the baby thing during the proposal, as you both did, I was also like "WHYYYY!?" (The chicken thing is in the book I think) Mrs. Elton's accent in this one was odd. I think Andrew Davies also employed fantasy sequences for his adaption of Northanger. I loved the 2020 servants, not only their silent commentary, but the "this is how much effort is involved for Emma to go to the get flowers for Miss Taylor" type stuff, Bill Nighy, costumes, (that pink jacket 😍) music, Harriet's realizations, and I really enjoyed Rupert Graves as Mr. Weston as far as Mr. Westons go.

Okay, I love Jane Austen, and I needed to go to bed because I’m a TA for an early morning Zoom class, but god, I clicked on this video so fast. I’ve been thinking about rewatching all the Emma’s since seeing the 2020, which I also watched about 4 days before California began shutting down. I didn’t even really register that this was a long video, because I was so into it. I love how thorough this was. I grew up with the Gwyneth Paltrow version, but I loved 2009 so much it surpassed my adoration of it. I haven’t seen the 2009 version in about eight years, but in my memories, it’s still my favorite for Romila Garai and Johnny Lee Miller’s performances. That said, I absolutely loved the 2020 version. I loved all the wacky dramatic things that Emma and Knightly and Elton did. It was absolutely absurd and watching it at 11 pm on a Friday night, just me and some random guy in the theater, was absolutely the treat I needed after a rough week. Clueless will always be my aesthetic delight, though ❤️

My main problem with the Miramax version (and it's been a while so I may need to rewatch it to be sure) was that, I think, Emma was in the wrong not just because she badly misinterpreted most of what was said to her, but also because she was actually lied to by Frank at some point. Which doesn't happen in the book or other adaptations, and takes something away from the story and Emma's character, to say nothing of Frank's. Also, Gwyneth Paltrow, although beautiful as always, was given a weird look that didn't suit her so much and made her look like a Modigliani; while Jeremy Northam was looking sooo good that there was no mystery as to how the story would end (and I didn't know the story when I first saw this movie.) The 2009 serie is my favorite, because I think all characters were perfectly cast and given something significant to do (the financial situation of the Bateses, the childhoods of Frank and Jane away from their families, Harriet's social position are topics that were given some space). I have not yet seen the 2020 film.

Loved this video! I have been very tempted to rent the 2020 Emma and I think this will be the final tipping point. In terms of other adaptations I would highly recommend "The Emma Agenda" which is a webseries that is available on RU-vid. It is a modern adaptation that really plays with the inherent queer aspects of the source material, such as having Knightley being a woman and Jane Fairfax being a man. It has one of my favorite Emmas as well!

I watched Emma 2020 with my Mom and although we liked it as a movie, we didn't like it as an adaptation. The costumes were nice and the girl who played Harriet was absolutely *adorable~* But! I did not appreciate the butt. My mother did, that's what I didn't appreciate. 😂 It was really cool to see the valet dressing him, though! I mean scenes with a maid tying her lady into a corset or fixing her hair are a dime a dozen.

Having read the book myself, I prefer adaptations of Emma to reading the novel. Something about not having to be so extensively in Emma Woodhouse's headspace, I think. Also! Also! That line about Knightley having held Emma in his arms as a baby is a line from the actual proposal in the book!!! D:
@julia.24

“As a friend!"-repeated Mr. Knightley.-"Emma, that I fear is a word-No, I have no wish-Stay, yes, why should I hesitate?-I have gone too far already for concealment.-Emma, I accept your offer-Extraordinary as it may seem, I accept it, and refer myself to you as a friend.-Tell me, then, have I no chance of ever succeeding?" He stopped in his earnestness to look the question, and the expression of his eyes overpowered her. "My dearest Emma," said he, "for dearest you will always be, whatever the event of this hour's conversation, my dearest, most beloved Emma-tell me at once. Say 'No,' if it is to be said."-She could really say nothing.-"You are silent," he cried, with great animation; "absolutely silent! at present I ask no more." Emma was almost ready to sink under the agitation of this moment. The dread of being awakened from the happiest dream, was perhaps the most prominent feeling. "I cannot make speeches, Emma:" he soon resumed; and in a tone of such sincere, decided, intelligible tenderness as was tolerably convincing.-"If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more. But you know what I am.-You hear nothing but truth from me.-I have blamed you, and lectured you, and you have borne it as no other woman in England would have borne it.-Bear with the truths I would tell you now, dearest Emma, as well as you have borne with them. The manner, perhaps, may have as little to recommend them. God knows, I have been a very indifferent lover.-But you understand me.-Yes, you see, you understand my feelings-and will return them if you can. At present, I ask only to hear, once to hear your voice.”

You like the fact that Emma "fights back" in the 2020 film which I personally find odd. She's not supposed to-- she's supposed to feel shame and remorse in that moment. Mr Knightley is berating her for being cruel. The fact that 2020 Emma shouts back baffles me, especially since they changed the line from "Ah! ma'am, but there may be a difficulty. Pardon me- but you will be limited as to number-only three at once.” which she could and did argue Ms Bates may not have understood to be insulting, to the very cutting "There's the difficulty. When have you ever stopped at three?" For her to shout back at Mr Knightley tells me she thinks herself justified in her insult to Ms Bates. Emma is supposed to walk the fine line of being just unlikeable enough due to her thinking too highly of herself-- but she's not supposed to be intentionally cruel.

I love Emma, it's probably my favorite of the books. My big problem with a lot of the Emma adaptations is they play Emma too serious and too demure instead of leaning into the upbeat, fun, mean but not really self aware about how she's hurting those around her so maybe it's not intentional cruelty but just the misguided assumption that she's always right and the classist values she holds are correct combined with her confidence (which is what makes her so compelling as a character). Clueless has an upbeat Emma, but I agree that she's maybe too mean and classist. Gwenyth Paltrow and the actress from Emma. were both way too demure and I didn't really get why the people in their world would have liked Emma so much because she wasn't that likable in those films. The best non-book Emma is from Emma Approved

I'm like the 1% that really enjoys Paltrow's Emma, I just think the cast is perfect Toni Collete, Ewan is the perfect Frank Churchill, perfect Miss Bates, perfect Mrs. Elton, Alan Cumming as Mr. Elton. Plus the score by Rachel Portman is really lovely. I don't enjoy the Beckinsale adaptation as much, the highlight for me is Olivia Williams as Jane Fairfax, in fact I'd say this is the most interesting Jane Fairfax out of the 3 adaptations for me. I like Romola as Emma but that's about the only thing I like. She also seemed a bit old for the role not to mention taller than Mr. Knightley LOL. I enjoyed the 2020 version for costumes but I find Frank Churchill and Mrs Elton forgettable, the first time I watched I thought the music was really interfering with the movie for me, but now I really like the soundtrack.
