When I worked at PetSmart they told me to give those to costumers and I never did. It’s all really basic bullshit care that I disagreed with. I would just tell people what I knew and researched, told them to research and then I recommended your channel lol

I feel the EXTREME need to express this on one of your videos, because I know a lot of people look up to you. But I worked at petsmart for less than a year, and it was my first ever job. When i turned 18 and got my license, Petsmart was the place I applied to and got accepted immediately. It was my dream job, because all of my life, I had LOVED animals. So I thought it would be the PERFECT place to get a first job. During my first week, they had me on COMPUTER training. I had to sit in the backroom and finish a huge test, where they would make me watch videos then answer questions afterwards. I passed ALL of the tests without failing. However, once I started getting ACTUAL training, that's when things went south. When shipments of animals came in, we had to put all of the new animals in their right spots in the back room. In the backroom... We would have over 20 hamsters in a shoe-box sized container, with one TINY house for them all to fit in. Before, and AFTER I finished my training, I constantly found hamsters in the backroom that had been torn apart by the other hamsters. The hamsters that were out on "display" were usually only 2 or 3 hamsters make it look like they were being humane. The managers told me: "NEVER have more than 2 or 3 hamsters maximum in the floor display. We don't want that display to be too cramped like the backrooms." When a small animal got sold from the "floor display," We would go back to the backroom to grab an animal to replace that empty spot. I had to deal with that kind of BS for a long time. And, when I would try to HELP these animals by using a seperate enclosure, I would get in trouble. They always said: "I don't care how uncomfortable the animal is. We are trying to SELL them. If you can't follow that rule, then you will be fired." in the end, I quit the day before black friday. I went into the office at the end of my shift, and told them that I was done contributing to their animal abuse. The manager said: "Are you REALLY quitting, when tomorrow is black friday? You do know that we need ALL workers here tomorrow, right?" and I was like "Yes. I'm tired of dealing with your ways, becase you neglect these poor animals in the backroom. Deal with it yourself." I'm now banned from working at ANY PetSmart in the USA.

Glad I did my own research on care beforehand or my ball would have died fast.

As a petsmart associate I do wanna make a few things clear, firstly most of our associates are not trained to educate or take care of our exotic animals, that job goes to a specific group of employees in the petcare department who are trained to meet the care requirements of the other animals in the store. While a cashier or stock associate might know about cats and dogs, if we have a question about pretty much any other kind of animal it goes to the pet care department of the store. That being said, that group of people do care very much for our animals, and we don’t really abide by a lot of things the company itself recommends, for example a trained pet care associate rarely ever actually recommends calcium sand despite our training telling us its ok. The group of employees that you most likely are going to speak with at the store in regards to reptiles generally do have a good education in them, no one really signs up for that position if they aren’t ready to handle the bugs, snakes and reptiles and the care they need. I don’t deny at all that many petsmarts are terrible, but from my own experience I can see it as more of a company issue. As much as associates care of the animals we are often denied essentials such as medications from a vet, proper lighting or even proper food due to managment issues. Hell I’ve even had a coworker buy supplies himself for the animals, not to mention spending a lot of time with customers making sure that they are equipped to getting the animal rather than an impulse buy

I just wanted to say that the temperature for the crestie is too high it should be more like 75-80 not 80-85 because at 85 they can die from being overheated, but overall the crestie one was pretty decent

My first beardie I got from pet smart, got the whole set up with sand, she got impacted after a bit, but she crawled into her hide when it started affecting her. That’s how I started learning everything I know today. Maybe that’s what the brochure meant by hiding more frequently

About 20 years ago I got a baby leopard gecko from my local Petsmart and followed all of their guidelines and what the clerk told me. That gecko was dead 2 months later from impaction. I’m still not over it. Luckily I know way better now and my current gecko is in great condition!!

I have a local pet store that hires small breeders to supply animals and the quality is amazing. All of the animals I have gotten there have been great. I have never been happier

As a person who works at PetSmart (hopefully not much longer 🙄) I like to go through them (reptile, bird, small animal, amphibian, arachnid, crustacean) with customers with my handy dandy marker and update them so they're correct and give them advice on where they can get better deals and supplies. What really sucks is my ex manager who was actually knowledgeable on the animals that we carry was working towards updating the care pamphlets but unfortunately got terminated shortly after mentioning it. :/

I live close to 2 Petco's. One of them has terrible care for leopard geckos, no dusted food, 1 hide, very small tank. The other Petco's reptile department's manager owns reptiles such as Bearded Dragons and Leopard geckos. At that Petco, the food is dusted with calcium, the geckos look very healthy, also, they are in 20 gallon tanks.

Have to emphasize the bit about not asking breeders/vendors at reptile expos about husbandry: At one of the expos I went to as a kid, I got really excited about a crocodile skink and these two little striped lizards (one day I'll find out what they were called, I didn't internalize the name back then). I had a 30 gallon screen top aquarium and asked the vendor about cohabing them and he said it was totally fine because they occupy different elevations of the tank. I was an over-excited kid who impulse bought those three, but I did a lot of research after taking them home and realized that red-eyed crocodile skinks are extremely shy. The little lizards were short lived and also escaped a lot as the screen top was just loose enough for them to shimmy out. Luckily they were communal and enjoyed basking near or on top of each other. Those two lived their full lives happy and healthy (even if I had to go on lizard hunting expeditions in my room every time Jello snuck its way out). My crocodile skink who I named Gator is still thriving today. She's now in a 36 gallon orchid-infested aquarium with a big water bowl and many hide-y holes. Despite my goof-up, she's living a long life! She was already an adult when I got her and she's been with me for 13 years. This turned into a ramble about my little trio, but yes: people really want to sell their stock and may tell you inaccurate husbandry information to get it done. Even when someone is obviously about to impulse buy, they can take advantage of that. There are plenty of good breeders out there that I have talked to at expos that give correct information, but just as many desperate sellers too. My babies were lucky. Gator was secretive and always was either underwater or in her hides and Mello and Jello were arboreal, small, and communal. Thankfully, I at least researched as much as I could afterwards and that the tank I had could accommodate them.

Always reassuring that my personal favorite approved veterinarian makes sure my animals are having the best husbandry possible. Forgeting about the T.j.maxx incident.

My local petsmart has very knowledgeable employees that have probably cared for reptiles in the past, and whenever i adopted my first reptile from there a couple months ago (a baby beardie named bandit), this nice lady discouraged me from buying calcium sand and got me this cool subtrate mat instead. She also told me to shake it down and make sure there isnt any loose particles on there so bandit won't eat em. Overall good employees there.

Ok wait, for the EYELASH crested gecko temperatures, they shouldn't really be kept above 80 degrees F because it can cause their organs to shut down cos they don't do awesome with high temps. Will they survive? Yes, kinda, sorta. They'll be miserable. I know when it gets hot where I live in the summer, my EYELASH crested gecko acts super upset and fussy

The crested gecko guide is terrible too. I breed crested geckos, since about 2015-ish. You NEVER house males together, EVER, they will kill each other! Also, lights usually cause more harm than good because they overheat easily, and the crested geckos having no eye lids can hurt their eyes being in captivity like that with a bulb rights there over them in such close proximity. 85 degrees is too hot, high 70's is better. Also, I learned recently from a mentor with more experience than me that over-misting can cause health problems from evaporation drying out their skin! I now use a mixed substrate (Zilla jungle bedding, sphagnum moss, and a small portion of aquarium charcoal) that holds humidity great and mostly cover the screen lids. Now I only mist 3 times a week and everything stays regulated. Petsmart and Petco suck when it comes to any form of exotic pet guidance, they couldn't find their own a$$ with both hands and a map. I even saw a baby crested gecko die right in front of me, terrible and heart breaking.

My female Leo's tried to kill eachother (this was many years ago). I brought one to the vet due to what I thought was retained she'd in her eye... Turned out to be a bite injury! Under a magnifying glass we discovered many other tiny tiny injuries! Ones I couldn't see that had spanned years! I seperated them that day and would never recommend housing even females together. You won't always see the aggression until it's too late

do wanna mention that heat lamps should mainly be used for ambient temperature. I have a heat mat but the ceramic bulbs really help with humidity and keep the whole cage warm enough (i live in Minnesota so that's a must)

I was pretty proud of the Petsmart I worked for as we had some very well-educated staff. I moved up to management of the Petcare department because I was in college for veterinary technology and my second in command at the time was even more knowledgeable than I was about exotics. I know not all Petsmarts staff people so thoughtfully or have that caliber of people but we did and it was why people really loved our store. I was devastated when I had to move away. Still one of the best work environments I have been in as far as just having a really perfect crew and good leadership. So for what it's worth, I totally understand where you're coming from and I had no problem picking apart those pamphlets with my customers and making sure they -really- knew how to take care of their critters. :P

I use a ceramic heat lamp and a heat mat and my leopard gecko uses both. He is really outgoing and has lots of hides but in the evenings after he eats he likes to bask in the open under the lamp. I couldn’t find clear direction on which to use so I gave him both :D

The most consistent problem with pet stores I find is size. They always advertise smaller enclosures than you should use, probably because the enclosures are the most expensive up-front cost so the more expensive it is to start the less likely people are to impulse buy it. Also worth noting: there is an official scientific "room temperature" range which is 20-25 degrees celcius (68-77 fahrenheit), but the average customer might not know that.

The first snake i ever got was from a petsmart and it died within a week of me getting it. The manager told us that "it was so strange" and its "the first time its happened to them". We tried to get them to change their policy so that they can't sell you a snake if they haven't had three successful feedings. I don't have much faith that they actually did. I would never recommend someone getting any pet from petsmart.

When I first started getting into fish I started with goldfish. When I bought them they kept dying, after research I learned about ick and saw my fish had it! I took them from a store to a new tank with new everything. I then went to Petco with a water sample to check other things. When I did the worker berated me for high ammonia levels, OF COURSE AMMONIA LEVELS WERE HIGH MY FISH WERE DEAD IN THE WATER FOR A WHOLE NIGHT! When I pointed out ick she quickly excused it till I walked her to the tanks at Petco and showed her a fish with ick. Ick can kill in less then two days, meaning the fish kept dying in their care and they never checked anything besides water quality. I then refused to leave the aquarium section and informed customers of it until she closed it. She never apologized, I was heart broken.

I had like a 2m by 2m by 1m for 3 geckos but i got adviced sand by my pet store seller, one of my geckos got impacted and my mom sold them while I was on hollyday after he died (also an exotic vet charged us 200.- for some kind of surgery to try to save my impacted gecko) anyway all of this to say I have first hand experience of why sand is trash

I use to work at a pet store you named in the video and people use to ask for me by name. They would get great reviews and shout me out by name because of the great help. Here is the secret... I told them the truth and said this item is shit or that item is trash. I would help them hand pick animals and made sure to tell them if a animal like the tortious would live pass them and would get pretty large and explain that the animal's would need larger enclosures at this age so make sure you are prepped. I still have people contact me and they knew how much I loved the animal's especially since all mine are rescues. Left because medical reasons but I hope whoever replaced me cared half as much as I did for both the animals and the people buying them.

Before I got my corn snake my mom made me get one of those and it was just like "Give them mice heat and accasonal water blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah" Long story short I didn't take care of it right and he escaped, I got a new one and he is healthy and getting a huge upgrade soon (10 gallon to 120 gallon i think)

PetSmart employee here. We just started selling Cuban False Chameleons. Their primary diet is snails. Our care guide for the Cuban False doesn't even mention snails, and we don't sell feeder snails and aren't supplied snails to feed so we're stuck feeding mealworms and crickets to our reptile. I'm livid 🙃

Well though they have decent guides every time I go there like 1 time a week they ask what animal I have and I tell them well I got my crested gecko and my Leopard gecko and they still always say do you need new heating or SAND

I am so happy I work at a petsmart with people who actually care. They tell people to not read the guides and do real research give real advise and recommend better things than the guides. Also try to fight to spend more and get better breeders it won't ever work but hey at least they try.

just got a fancy leo from petsmart. he's beautiful. all of the workers were so passionate about animals and the girl who worked in reptiles has had one for 16 years and has always grown up with them. they took such good care of all the animals. i know that's rare in chains but i felt comfortable doing so and hes been amazing

It’s so weird because I hear all the time that leopard geckos are not basking animals, but I have two leopard geckos that were raised with heat lamps and not a heat mat. I wanted to keep them on lamps because that’s what they were used to, but I also put a heat mat, but I still see them basking all the time! Lol

I remember when I was getting basking lights for my dragons and an employee just walked up to me and asked me what I was getting the lights for and I said some dragons, and he said no no you have to get a red light. I literally laughed in his face, and told him that dragons should not and do not need red lights, they are not good for their eyes and disturb their sleep if people decide to keep them on at night which they should not, and said that if they need heat at night if your room temp is not 70 75 at night use a heat mat. Like seriously I feel bad for people who don’t do research and waste their money on things they don’t need and possibly hurt their animals

I use a heat lamp for a very limited time plus a heat lamp in the winter. I live in NY state and it get a extremely cold here so it's the only real way to house them sometimes. But I mostly agree that a heat lamp isn't really needed.

I recently just got a leopard gecko and couldn’t settle on a website for one that’s not $100, so I decided on one from petco and I knew what to look for. Had to drive about an hour to Lafayette to their petco which is great. All the reptiles there are very healthy!

A funny, or sad, note on calcium sand. I once let my Uromastyx play in some, supervised (I was literally given 4 bags of the stuff). He ended up looking ridiculously dusty afterwards and it took a bit of a bath and scrub to get it off. I would worry about them breathing that stuff in, it's so dusty! He had fun digging... but I wouldn't even do THAT again, let alone have a lizard living on the stuff.

I worked for petco. We recieve the most basic 5 minute video on care for reptiles as if all the reptiles sold need the same care. As a reptile lover it was such a struggle trying to give real reptile care when the customers are reading the contradicting pamphlet or when your manager who just wants the sale but has never owned a reptile and just had a dog once as a kid is telling the customer what they want to hear. I had a manager tell a customer that fire belly toads make great pets for children and that if he helped he absolutely could let his 3 year old hold one and play with it after I had just told the customer that it wouldn't be a good 1st pet for a toddler. But I guess the sale mattered more than the animal or even the toddler

As someone who works as an small animal care technician at a pet store (not petsmart or petco, its a newer chain.) I can vouch: Most pet care guides only state the bare minimum requirements to maintain a certain animal. We only just recently started doing the little pet brochure thing, but prior to that (and we still have and give new owners these too,) our normal pet care guide was 2-3 pages worth, printed front and back, of information. And even then, they make a point to say that what's on those pages are the BARE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS. Do plenty of research, read pet forums, search for information that most brochures might not tell you about certain animals before you buy them. If you ain't doing that and you have no experience, then you aren't ready to get that animal.
