Well I'm a cod guy and know for a fact how good this place is so pleased you gave it a good review. I'm a Northerner but spend a lot of time around Bournemouth and probably tried all their chippies over the last decade , our favourite being Alexander's Fish & Chips in Christchurch . They don't have a seated area but we always go and eat them at Mudeford Quay just around the corner. Thanks Gary I need to take a trip down now asap 🤣👍

I worked there as a kid, and they make their own mushy peas. Great employers and the place always has massive queues outside in the evenings.

My Auntie Christobel would often take me there when I was a kid (it was pretty small place when opened when'd go there) when I'd go and stay with Grandparent's in Poole. She passed away 2 years ago but the last time I saw her, we have gone to Chez Friend

Another great review Gary. I reckon it won't be long that you'll have so many comments on your videos you won't be able to respond to them all. But well done! It's impressive how fast your channel is growing and that's all down to your no-nonsense, no gimmicks approach to your reviews. I've watched a lot of food reviewers and there comes a point where you tire of "zany" challenges, loud music and fast editing. I've just realised......you're basically the food reviewer equivalent of comfort food! And I mean that as a compliment :)

Unlimited chips: makes a big difference from those posh places that struggle to put more than 6 chips with the fish. Looks good. But I agree, shame haddock wasn't on the menu. Cheers.

The unlimited chips is very much like in many Belgian restaurants. I worked at a plant north of Gent for a while and we ate regularly in Ertvelde at what is now De Gouden Kroon (might have changed, it's so long ago.) On eone occasion, the three of us had different main courses and our Belgian man had something that didn't need chips, but being a growing lad he helped himself to a huge plateful we had, more than enough for the three iof us anyway. We still hadn't fully finished when the waitress noticed the empty chip plate, apologised and without a word from us ran off to get us yet another huge plateful. The Belgians are proud of their frites! Might go to Bournemouth again sometime and if we do, I'll look out for Chez Fred.

Once again another honest review Gary. It only seems like yesterday I was congratulating you on reaching 10k subscribers and your now over 30k congratulations once again your by far the best food reviewer I've seen on RU-vid.

I've been subscribed a month but only just come across this review. I used to visit Chez Fred once a week with a friend before he passed. We had the lunchtime special and I agree with your review mostly. The fish was always the highlight, so fresh and tasty. the chips were OK, but never seemed like proper chip shop chips, more like chips I would do at home, though perfectly fine, and they always put up the name of the potato variety being cooked. And I always took advantage of a second plate of chips with the meal. There was also the option of unlimited sparkling water which I made ue of.The mushy peas were also fine, I'd rather thick mushy peas than thin. Great value and great fish. Thanks for bringing back some happy memories of visiting there.

Chez Fred! Brilliant name ❤ Looks great, yummy looking mushys, I hate runny mushys. I think I’d want just good old sliced white bread and butter so you can make a chip butty. 🥪 😊 Beautiful thick piece of cod. £12 for all that is amazing, I’d pass on the curry sauce. I've had a takeaway from there a few times now, it is always very tasty, could not fault it to honest, the best I have tasted. I always have cod too, the chips are not the crispiest but are very tasty and I am happy with them. I also have the stodgy mushy peas, but that is how I like them. For those looking for it, it is located in Westbourne, not the main Bournemouth centre. Great review. 👍

Love Chez Fred been a few times over the years. Never had a bad experience. Fish always fresh and well cooked. Great review

This place is a solid 9/10. I went there in 2023 and it’s extremely good. You get very few fish and chips restaurants getting into the 9’s.

My family are originally from Dorset so in the summer we go to Bournemouth for a family meetup, I'll definitely be visiting this place if it's still open in the summer, looks delicious and the unlimited chips are great for the little nieces and nephews

Another great video. I’m not British, so I’ve never had curry sauce with Fish and Chips. But I do like a generous dousing of cider vinegar. If you like your tartar sauce, you need to come to Japan. They make a really interesting tartar that actually has cut up boiled egg in it. Really nice with fried food.

Fish n chips by the seaside.🙂 Can’t be beaten. No peas or curry sauce for me though,just salt,vinegar and tartare sauce. Home made tartare sauce,even better! Another great review Gary.🙂👍🏻

Tartar sauce is my favourite. I travel all over the Uk and Ireland and have tried many fish and chip shops. Have tried chez fred in Bournmouth and it’s safe to say chez fred ranks as one of the best for taste. I think the best fish and chips I had anywhere was a family run fish and chip take away in Aberdeen. The fish I had was haddock and was off the boat that afternoon.

I can hardly manage the standard chips in fish and chips! Very filling! Didn't like the look of the curry sauce. Looked a bit glutinous

I live about 35 minutes drive from Chez Fred’s and it is our go to fish and chip shop. We normally do takeaway and drive and eat it in the car. I have never had a bad bit of fish and chips from Fred’s. Love the staff, but choose your time to avoid the massive wait for both the takeaway and eat in. Defo 5*

‘Plant based’? That’s the Frankenstein slop that fills the shelves in supermarkets because nobody buys it.

We tried Chez Fred when we followed Fulham away to Bournemouth. Fantastic quality at an amazing price . Keep up the good work CF .

A really nice,shiny& clean Rest,with a comfortable relaxed atmosphere! Now in general i'm not the biggest fan of Fish in batter ( i prefer it baked or Fried in it's original Skin),but i have to say,that looked the nicest piece of Cod,i can recall seeing, So white,with plenty of Body! And very good value! So this would have to be worth a visit,if ur in this area! 👍🇨🇮☘️🥂

Tartare sauce every time. Not sure I would consider mushy peas a sauce. From the look of it, I would not have needed more chips - possibly a sprinkle more. I for one have never had curry sauce with fish and chips and probably never will. Thanks for the review.

It may have already been mentioned but it’s actually in Westbourne, just outside of Bournemouth. There are also some very good traditional shops and a beautiful old arcade to walk through.

I used to live near by in Wimborne , my favourite chippy on the south coast. Never been disappointed going there.

What I like about Gary is intro, menu, order then eat then rate. That fish was so thick well worth £15-20.

Fantastic review! Absolutely perfect portion size for me. Have to admit in a chippy, I prefer softer chips. In a restaurant they've got to be crunchy. With the mushy peas, I put lots of vinegar, salt and white pepper on them, so perfect consistency for me! I totally agree. A 9/10. It's funny - we all have our different ways of eating food. For me, I pull the top batter off the fish and pour lots of salt, vinegar and ketchup on the fish. The last to go is the batter. I honestly love it more than the fish!

Great review this chippy was my local chippy for years when I used to live a 5 minute walk away has always been decent in the summer months you can easily wait an hour to get a table

Ok re Chez Fred, i must admit as soon as i saw the place and the food i thought oh we have a ten here, but like i said before us watchers don't have taste vision, so i support your 9 score 100% due to the peas and chips, but i must admit for the price i was very impressed indeed. Re condiments i think British law says you must have mushy pes with fish and chips, but i love tartar so much i really do. Chris.

Gary this video takes me back 15 years when as a family of 5 we stayed at my middle brothers large bournemouth house and dined here.All 5 of us enjoyed it and had a typical cod and chips and really enjoyed it .The place was packed and the quality very good , BUT Pricey! Still when you hear John Major and Cliff Richard have had take aways from their i guess that pushes the price & reputation up.No comparism to weatherspoons we gave it a solid 9/10 and memories of a packed and noisey resteraunt but good😅

Well done for hitting 30k. Very well deserved. Proper reviews with no nonsense or showboating. Lunchtime special seemed a good choice. Wish you had the Rock. It's my favourite. That looked a super meal for £12.95. And a pot of tea too. Reminds me of fish and chip restaurants when I was a kid 50 years ago. The fish looked incredible. Lovely big white flakes is always a sign of good fish. I'm a tartare sauce man, but my favourite is to pull the batter back, add Worcestershire Sauce and replace the batter to avoid the soggy batter syndrome. I think that's a very fair score.I would be happy to have a meal there.

Fantastic value for £12.95, looked a top class meal, agree about the tartare sauce Gary, it makes fish and chips, sadly not many chippys in Doncaster sell it so have to get a jar from the supermarket, it is the best condiment by a mile to have with your fish.

The venue looked really upmarket and lovely inside. The cod was exceptional so white flaky and fresh looking and batter crispy. I also thought Gary the chips needed to be a bit crispier but otherwise the whole meal was very good value. I quite liked the mushy peas thicker and the curry sauce looked good for dipping unlimited chips in. That’s definitely on my list to visit.

Hi Gary, Enjoyed your video as usual. Just one point if I may. You mentioned on several occasions that the chips were not crisp. Having crispy chips is not traditional with fish. When I was a lad you could watch the potatoes cleaned, peeled and chipped while waiting in the que to be served. When the chips were drained and thrown into the fryer this would create a light golden colour of soft chip texture. A few chip shops would turn the fryer up after a few minutes after submersion. You could hear the burner roar while the fat heated to the next level. HMMM. When frozen chips were introduced we started to have crisp chips. Don't get me wrong. These chips are nice But compared the the original eaten while walking home on a frosty evening they do not compare. Any way just popping down to the chippy.

We stay in Westbourne 2-3 times a year ,first stop is always chez fred. Consistantley excellent. So good I bought the T shirt 😂

In the US, fish and chips are usually eaten more with the hands so everything doesn’t just fall apart. Vinegar and tartar sauce are used, but no one I know would use mushy peas or curry.

Love this place Gary, whenever I go for a British holiday to Bournemouth always make sure I have at least one meal here. As for the chips, since a small kid in the late 80's they have always either been rather crispy or a little crispy and fluffy! I'm not fully Vegan, but am lactose Intolerant/allergic to Whey so can't have full dairy-but I sometimes do have their Banana Blossom Fish with Chips!

Hi Gary 👋 Excellent video! I’m from Vancouver, Canada and curry sauce with fish & chips is not a thing here. It’s always served with tartar sauce and I love tartar sauce ❤ Some places will have mushy peas on the menu as a side, but it’s not very popular here.

Evening Gary Fish and chip shop looked good. Love Bournemouth too use to visit a lot. Nice bit of French bread and butter, No to mushy peas can't stand them but know you like them. Love Cod and it looks nice and white. Its Tartar sauce for me every time! Was the meal Hot Gary? Thought you were a little harsh with 9/10 thought a good 91/2/10 due to value etc but you know best. I watch loads of restaurant review channels, but this is quickly becoming my favourite. So many focus on clever transitions and artistic shots of the food, and while entertaining, you get no sense of what it would be like to go there for a meal. I love the fact that we get to see the exterior, interior, service, food as it actually is. Chez Fred looks amazing for the price - the cod alone will have been a decent chunk of that. Love the portion sizes on the sauces. Love that they remembered the lemon. I go for tartare or curry sauce normally. Love mushy peas but 90% of places serve them unseasoned. I reckon you should award them a Gary Score™. Thanks for another great review!
