To ignite it with the button you just barely crack the gas on the unit. Not the valve on the tank… but the valve on the actual mechanism.. if you have the gas turned on full force right away then the igniter will not spark enough force to loght the flame. You can check to make sure your igniter is working before you attach it to your large propane tank by looking into the black cone area and pressing the igniter button. If you see a spark then your igniter is working just fine. :) once you make all connections, open up the valve on the tank fully. The little valve that is on the unit just crack it open barely. You can still hear the gas come thru a little, but again… just crack it open barely. then hit the igniter button. That should catch the flame and get it going. After the flame is lit you can choose to open the unit’s valve up all the way or you could even just leave the unit’s valve barely cracked open and use the trigger on the unit to get bigger bursts of flame as needed
Dang, I appreciate your instructions! Very straight forward and simple, way better than the user manual because those are always a friggin scavenger hunt to get all the info
Thanks for the great video! I bought that torch from HF awhile ago and have been a little leery about using it. Going to fill the propane tank now, and can’t wait to use it on the weeds!
Thank you, I just bought this from Amazon (similar in construction) and am going to use to it break up the ice on the bottom of our drive and prob the walk way too. I noticed the same comment below about using the low flow first before starting in the Amazon comments. I really loved seeing this in action do I know the cord length etc. Thank you for the VERY clear and great commentary!!
I just bought one. Specifically for winter jobsites in Maine. My igniter works as it should so far. Definitely worth the $38, even if you have to manual light it, the ice doesn't stand a chance!
I just used the Greenwood torch for weeds in my yard. It works great! Im very happy with my purchase. A few tips for usage: -skip the model with the igniter. Its 12-15 dollars more and its not a big deal to manually ignite it with a bic or stick lighter -Hold the flame about a foot away from your target. Holding it too close and i found it doesnt burn as fast -stay behind the wind while you're working. This thing sends ashes and soot up in the air which are no fun to breathe in -be thorough but dont feel like you have to incinerate every little blade of grass/weed. You just need to scorch it enough to damage the plant cells and prevent photosynthesis from occurring. -it may take a few applications but after the first torching, it will be much easier to maintain Happy Torching ya'll!
thanks for the awesome review brother! been shopping around for the LONGEST time and never gave Harbor Freight a chance due to their crappy tools for cars, its a hit and miss with them sometimes
Thanks for the review. I have dead grass in my gravel driveway that we killed with rock salt, and I was wondering if this torch would burn it down all the way to get rid of it. Then you said “it takes it down to the dirt”. Just what I needed.
thank you for being honest and not toxic like a lot of my research has found me. you got a like from me my friend and i hope you get alot of use form it.
I got the cheaper HF Greenwood one without the starter that works wonderfully. Wiping out the poa annua, oxalis and dichondra is lots of fun. After wiping out the big patches, use a cane torch to burn new buddings.
I have the same model. You are trying to start it with the igniter with the gas to high. Crack the valve just until you hear it hissing. It will fire up on the first click.
I need to burn the leaf septoria as it is ruining my cannabis plants. I eat the leaves raw for my diabetes and it helps a lot. So this fungus can overwinter and still spread for the next year. Dr William Courtney has great videos on it. Yeah good explanation and want a flame of that size to burn brush too.
The ignition problem is because it has to be be just trickling gas. I first lit mine using a smaller torch. I still will, lol. Thanks for the footage of the ice melting. When I was a teenager I would get out to shovel walks and driveways. I would come home pretty tired but $80 richer. This was in the late sixties. I’m glad I blew through that money instead of banking it. Too many paperboys did that and became papermen. My Chinese girlfriend calls me a paper tiger if I call her a dragon lady. The cold war is over!
Hey yall, your local ecologist reminding yall to NOT BURN YOUR SOIL! ONLY THE GRASS! If you let the grass grow just a tiny bit more than the length in this vid, your soil will thank you heavily for it. I highly suggest you all to look into native flowers/grasses to go in tandem with burning your european grasses. Cheers!!!
You actually don’t need to burn the plants either. It’s actually more effective to only hold the flame over them until they wilt. This destroys the plant at the cellular level, and eventually, it will quit trying to come back. It’s been extremely effective helping me remove a large patch of ivy this way. The areas that I burned came back a lot quicker. 🤷🏼♀️
The week connection he shows for the igniter is the same problem I had. I re-adjusted the cable length to prevent if from coming loose. Seems to work most (not all) the time now.
Don’t turn the gas on full force until you hit the igniter switch. You just need a little trickle of gas flow then hit the igniter switch. After it is lit then turn the valve up to full throttle.
I have large areas of creeping bell flower intermingled with my lawn grass. Anyone who is familiar with the weed can attest to how ridiculously resilient it is. Would this method be effective on wiping it out for good?
I don't have any problems getting it to light, however, in the middle of using it for only the 3rd time, I lost 95% pressure. It's hardly putting out any flame at all. I've watched videos on resetting the flow valve, but it doesn't help... I'm not sure if that applies to this brand.
It also does a good job on driveway motor oil drips. Mine also takes quite a few hits of the starter to light. I should have bought the cheaper one (no starter).
I had the same issue. To correct, before igniting I would just barely turn on the control for the gas. Any more than that and there is not enough oxygen to ignite. Hope that helps.
Do you try to light it after opening the valve all the way? If so, you gotta turn the gas flow down to just a trickle first. After you spark the flame, then turn the gas all the way up.
When using a piezo lighter you only turn the gas on slightly during lighting. Too much and it won’t light. Sounds like you may be turning it up too much
I learned this with my smaller propane torch a while ago. Couldn't get the thing to start with my lighter for the life of me, then I finally tried it with the gas knob turned very low and it worked fine.
A roofing company burned down our neighbors house last week doing a flat roof like this. A 50+ YO 3 story house was a total loss. What didn't burn suffered water damage. Nobody on the job spoke English and they had no fire extinguisher nearby, so we had to call the fire department for them. WRZ 2022-01-26 Delaware County, PA
What are the odds? First video is the exact reason for watching it ! Burr grass ! Its got to go ! My grand babe's get it in their feet ! I don't like poison for anything so, i was thinking about a flamer . Thanks for the great video! Im going to go with a brand name device if ican get one.
Brand names do not always equal quality or worth. Harbor Freight has a lot of cheap tools that work better sometimes than their name brand counterparts.
My igniter worked good, only when I pull the trigger all of the way, the flame goes out. Maybe I have the valve on the tank open too much? Would appreciate anyone's input on this one. If I pull the trigger just partially it seems to work ok.
Other newer reviews (5/24), seem great! But it looks like your getting FULL BLAST flame even without using your finger on the trigger!!! You should be getting fery low flame without trigger being pulled.
You are also burning down the plants way more than you need to in order to kill them. You don't need to incinerate, you can just pass the flame over to damage the plant. Rupturing all the cells is going to kill it just as well actually incinerating it but will be much faster and use far less fuel.
I’m not convinced that damaging the cells will work for all weeds. I have crazy weeds that spread under ground. I have a rock yard so I’ll be incinerating.
That lighter should be somewhere where you can operate it with one-hand, but rather they put it in the suckyist location. Also the torch cuts out all the time requiring frequent relights after I have have fiddled with it trying to get the settings right for an hour.
as long as the adapter connects without a leak it really doesn't matter. The 20 lb tank is referenced because people are familiar with those cylinders more than any others.
@@mjpthetrucker9485 Thanks. I have no use for a propane tank otherwise so that’s good info. I did learn that 20 is more common so it’s easier to fill/exchange.
