Its the same if you were being made uncomfortable/sexually harassed at your job. Its a very uncomfortable thing to deal with. I empathize with her during the segment 100%. But the idea you have to keep dragging it out forever after is just ridiculous internet games. Does he have a history of this? 19:40 I don't think Destiny experiences "social pressure" the same way normal people do. he's like "why not just break character and potentially be seen as the one causing a ruckus, just to assert a boundary you may not even realize people will side with you over?" it's like,... because normal people will often let their boundaries be bent, in order to NOT cause a ruckus. that's normal. doesn't mean the person isnt actually bothered. maybe destiny would just break the broadcast and call out the DM, but most normal humans have a desire to get along and not be the "problem". but yes we should work on ensuring people are more confident in asserting their boundaries, even if they "might be seen as the bad guy".

Destiny says she lacks agency here, but you have to remember that you're focus is on your character and not yourself while roleplaying. So even tho she seemed to display being uncomfortable she didn't act on it, cause her focus was on how her character felt and she didn't consciously recognize her discomfort. I think it would have been necessary of the dm to clarify before how far intimate or sexual roleplay is ok and in that scene maybe make a little break. But from my experience it's hard to notice something like her discomfort while you're busy running the game. I think both could have done better. The dm a better job in clarifying stuff before and be more attentive in such a scene, while she could have payed more attention to herself and recognizing her discomfort respectively not putting up with something like that and saying that aloud. As I see it this was by no means intentional by the dm, just an idea of him going too far

Okay, I don't understand it? Is it because the DM is taking over control of the character's sensations too much? Like, if he only described half of it and the player filled in the rest, this would be a perfectly normal DnD playful interaction, right? People bring sexual encounters affecting the game all the fucking time, no? I don't have a lot of experience with the game, but this seems completely ordinary to me, except perhaps for how much the DM might be forcing it.

There are so many social aspects to this that all are made worse from the live format they are doing. Adam has done many campaigns, and I don't really like his DMing style, but I don't think what he did has ill-intent. He is, however, doing this in front of a live audience, which means that he needs to consider the viewers just as much as the players. If this game was done in private, I don't think she would mind as much, but she can feel retro-active discomfort after the game. Adam did make it clear where the scene was going, but he relied too much on her interrupting him to withdraw consent rather than explain to the player what is going on and ask if they want to do anything about it. This happened 11 months ago, so all we can do is make this a learning point for other DMs that this kind of thing needs to be discussed with players and told to the audience as well, even if it breaks up the flow of the scene.

He was definitely out of line, typically you don't ever impose a sexual encounter on someone without either talking to them out of character or giving them a choice first. I definitely wouldn't classify it as rape, but the reason why you don't do this is to avoid these awkward situations. Imo I don't see how you could possibly make that not an awkward situation. The only thing I can think of is bringing it up with heavy pretext as to what is about to happen and giving them the choice to do so or not. But again, that's giving them the choice and they can decline even if it takes a little bit of metagaming to do so. All that being said I want to reiterate, this shouldn't be the equivalent to rape. A social line was crossed, but the solution to this is easy. Just leave the group. Or talk to the dm and express how that made you uncomfortable, and if they don't respect that then again leave. I just can't see how an imaginary encounter could traumatize someone. If they've already had a traumatic experience and this just triggered that experience, then I can understand that but that's a whole different story. Also on the point Destiny made "why would you ever imply that you're uncomfortable instead of just coming out and saying it", in this case I can see why she would rather imply it rather than the latter. They're doing a podcast, I'm not sure if its live or not but even if it were just recorded, she doesn't want to make a scene in front of their audience. I'm not sure what they do or don't make revenue off of so I guess I'm just assuming this is their job. But even if she specifically isn't making money doing this, ultimately the best outcome for her is to not make a scene and for the uncomfortable situation to go away. I'll agree she could have backed off farther, but I don't think that makes her anywhere close to at fault as the person making the awkward situation.

I don’t know why destiny is acting like a normal campaign would include a rape scene. Rape and SA just aren’t common or necessary in tabletop rpg. The “special” campaign isn’t the one that doesn’t include/avoids rape scenes. That’s just a normal campaign.
@rekzors
@rekzors 3 года назад
In my experience anytime a campaign is particularly dark or wants to show true horrors or evil it comes up. It is one of those lazy writing crutches of how this is easy to show how evil someone is. I have been guilty of it my self. Also not saying this is a good thing. Reading Terry Goodkind who does it too a disgusting degree is what made me realize how dumb it was. I think Destiny is missing the thread a bit. Yes, it is not rape or anything close to the level of rape. No one in his chat is putting these two things on the same level. But often in uncomfortable situations, especially with a whole group involved including a chat watching, someone could feel a lot of pressure to go along with the uncomfortable situation even if they don't want to. Again, this is NOT sexual assault, and it probably doesn't deserve a massive manifesto on the part of the girl. But can we acknowledge that it is not so easy to speak up against something uncomfortable when surrounded by the rest of the people going along with it. P.S. CRIIIINGE

Agree. Destiny usually has good takes on these situations but is really oversimplifying this situation. There are a lot of different factors in play that makes her just coming out and saying “this makes me uncomfortable” a lot more difficult. She could be worried about spoiling the mood for the audience, could be worried that the audience or other members will think she’s being overreactive, could be worried that she could get kicked out of the group if she vocalizes her discomfort (thereby loosing visibility and money that she is earning off the streams) At the end of the day, she should have still been clearer about her discomfort. But saying she’s a child if she doesn’t feel comfortable about speaking up in this situation is a pretty shit take as well.

This was so overblown, no one was really hurt or assaulted they were all adults, and "Professional gamers" an android character who wanted to experience new feelings (Backstory) had a creepy N.P.C guy insert a thumb drive into the back of their neck and had plenty of time in and out of the game to say "No I'm not happy" but nope no one said anything. Adam and the players should have discussed its next session and it would have made for an interesting talk or she could have just had her character who was a male android shoot the creepy N.P.C in the face, instead of everyone making a huge thing out of it and throwing the G.M under the bus.

(First time hearing about this) She didn't completely call it out, but it was clear that she was uncomfortable. I just don't like the fact that you scoff at the idea that she didn't say anything because she didn't want to end the campaign, because that's a legitimate reason to not especially say something at that moment. Especially if this a live stream and would make the situation even more cringe. If he went further with it, then she should've said something, but at that point she figured that hopefully the guy could take the hint and drop it, without making a big deal over it. The guy is super oblivious to reading people or feeling out the room, but that's no reason to cancel a guy. I think as long as he apologized to her specifically and of course steer clear of any sexual scenarios in the future just in case, he shouldn't be banned or anything. I guess I can see the case that it's sexual harassment, but there's no way in hell that's sexual assault and I think him taking year off (that's what you guys said) and his apology was more than good enough.

I cannot think of a group of people more unprepared for the real world than somebody getting upset at a role-playing tabletop game who needs therapy after an (admittedly cringe) game. You know, I saw this documentary once with some ISIS 'brides' who are raped repeatedly, forcibly married, tortured, starved etc. One of them had a baby as a result of this unimaginable abuse. Her abuser demanded she keep the baby quiet, and as it was a baby, and hungry, and living in the worst imaginable conditions in the world, she sadly couldn't stop it crying. So the ISIS soldier took the baby and cut it's head off. This happened, in real life, in the 21st Century. Just something to think about.

21:30 "if you can't say no in this situation" - um... live in front of a lot of people... I don't think that would be a super easy environment to say no to. wouldn't want to disrupt the game or be perceived as too sensitive. Also the vibe before from the mechanic was naive awkward romantic which the "Johnny" engaged with. The scene felt similar to lots of teenager romance movies, where the thing they explore is more like a first time kiss or such - Out of character I didn't see escalation coming... e.g. from "let's do something" to "your pleasure centres get hacked" -- the "I guess that happened" kind of summed up that she didn't anticipate that either. So in conclusion: definitively cringy. Understand why she dropped out, though I don't think he should be "cancelled" over this, though as DM in front of an audience he has more responsibility than if this was just some home game.

She may have been uncomfortable, but it was ultimately her audience that motivated her to leave the group and transform this into an absurd spectacle that could only have ended with Adam getting canceled. And you're spot on about women needing to be confident enough to speak up and voice their discomfort in these situations. Nothing about Adam or his group suggests to me that they would have been anything but understanding and reasonable had she done so. But the mere suggestion that she should have been required to put in the "emotional labor" for this is so infuriating that some of these people will clutch their pearls and insist that you're "unsafe" at best and some manner of rape apologist at worst.

This would have never been such an issue 3-4+ years ago on their channel. My main problem with Adam in particular about this whole thing (aside from the admittedly really shitty/cringy DM'ing here) is that it comes across as pretty damn hypocritical given that he's often been preaching for safety etc., "consent cards" and all. Don't think he deserved full-on exile so much as a slap on the wrist for this one though. At some point the person that feels uncomfortable in a roleplaying game (as opposed to an actual illegal event like rape) has some responsibility to give some kind of indication that they're feeling uncomfortable. Especially if something is making you feel so uncomfortable that you want to cancel someone for it, you should probably clearly say so. You can't just passively take it and then be like "yeah actually what you said made me really uncomfortable now please cancel yourself". That's just not right. Call it victim blaming if you want but personally I would never associate with a person who has trouble communicating what they're feeling during a conversation or a roleplaying game and then attacks people without warning. However, I think that she wasn't really expecting it to happen and it happened too fast for her to stop it. So the whole "she should've said something if she was uncomfortable" thing doesn't apply.
