I am very new to all this and don't understand much of what you did and why. However, this is how you learn...by being exposed to verbiage, concepts and things that are new. I've watched so many of your videos that I now have to make myself sit down and execute something to get my feet wet. I'm looking forward to your video comparing true nas with Open media vault. I also wanted to make a low powered NAS like you did just as Covid hit, but the parts are now hard to find and I'm not sure what type of substitutions to make. You make me laugh because you are so ADD and put out so much varying content and then say you have trouble getting around to checking new stuff out. I don't know how you get half of what you do done. Thanks for all your videos and the work you put into them, Jay!

it depends on your budget but I just picked up a used HP ProLiant N54L MicroServer from ebay to play with, there is a lot of information available on bios modding, using 16GB ram and adding additional drives. Its a few years old but allows many different operating systems ( Free and paid versions) plus storage configurations.

I liked this video a lot. They ought to donate this unit to you, because you are in effect helping with their marketing effort. I would pull their leg on this. you might just get lucky! Thanks again and stay safe there!

Jay, syncthing has a docker container. Would it be possible to use syncthing that way instead of adding a 3rd party repository?

Non-reviewed reviews are the best reviews. This should be good.

interesting to see the thing on top of your rack, change lights, like it has its own expressions :)

Using the Synology OS on another more powerful machine might be an easy and beginner friendly answer. I wonder if the image could be transfered once it has been installed?

I use FreeNAS (TrueNAS), which I like and works well. Like yourself I enjoy experimenting with the different options. The synology software reminds me of how paid UNIX software used to be. Rock Solid. I have learned much from your videos. Thank you very much.

My VM storage is an HP 8/24 8gb SAN switch (with rails!) with the FreeNAS node and ten clients each with an HBA card. Not too expensive really, less than 200 for the whole set up with cables and sfp's included. I search ebay alot for the deals no one snaps up. The switch uses JAVA for gui based management, but it also has CLI serial interface of course.

No having at least 2.5Gbps or 5Gbps ports on a $800 device is kind of ridiculous.

Sweet review, thank you. How is the noise level? I have a Qnap 231 and now and then the fan gives an annoying hum.

Please include Unraid in your NAS comparison! It’s awesome!

Can we use 16 TB exos on a bay? I saw somewhere it was mentioned 14TB per bay. If you can confirm if there is a cap

This is the thing that I am looking for. Although I'm looking for something that I can replace older NAS servers which hold a few T.B. of movies, before they die on me. Would this be good with Plex or Emby, does it have the transcoding ability to run for home libraries ? And Yes, Promox Videos would be great.

I'm trying to get my HP DL380P G8 to perform GPU pass-through using NVIDIA P400 for plex. However, I'm running into a wall. Can you assist?

I don't know much about Synology but interested in getting one for my house and home lab. How does it work with the hard drives? Since this is a 6 bay, can I put a couple of 8TB in at first and add more later?

Is it possible to have one slot that is not part of the raid so that I can say put in a large drive and copy files to it and move to another PC? Or does any drive have to be part of a raid, mirror etc?

@Super Mario Hey Thaks for not answering the question. But I guess since you're presumably a failed plumber I shouldn't have expected much ;)

What are these "static leases" that you keep talking about?
@Noodles.FreeUkraine
@Noodles.FreeUkraine 3 года назад
Not Jay, but he likes his router to assign static IPs centrally instead of setting them individually at every single end point. Easier to manage that way.
@romany8125
@romany8125 3 года назад
@AstroCat What you're talking about is called Static IP assignment. There are no leases involved. Leases are done by DHCP servers, which can not assign Static IP addresses by definition, because they are reserved (excluded) from DHCP pools. Looks like the author is trying to confuse people with inventing his own terminology.

Asus routers call this 'Manually Assigned IP around the DHCP list'

I love Synology for the software and ease of use, but the hardware has me cringe very time. So, they build a 2021 model and all they come up with is a cut down Ryzen from early 2018. Yay. And they're gonna sell that thing for years to come. RAM speed locked at 2400 MHz. 1 Gb NICs. 4 GB RAM. WTF. Why not go all out and cut it off at 64k? There's not even an _option_ for a normal CPU, nada. Also, those add-on cases are OCD triggers with a different design that hasn't been updated for years to fit in with the rest of the portfolio. Of course, the alternative right across the street (QNAP) has it the other way around. Great hardware, mediocre software. Guess they just hate me both LOL.
@PaulSullivan828

What do you mean "no option for normal CPU"? There's a "xs" model with an Intel Xeon
@Noodles.FreeUkraine
@Noodles.FreeUkraine 3 года назад
@@PaulSullivan828 Yep, and that one is even older. A chip from 2015 in a 2021 model. Hooray. 🙈

You started out great, but then went off the rails talking about building a virtual server out of a older computer using enough acronyms that I got totally lost and just quit watching. I thought this was a review of the 1621+ not a litany of your other passions.
