Reviewing the YORKSHIRE PUDDING MEAL in YORK. My LOWEST SCORE so far! 

Sadly, this is exactly the sort of place tourists would flock to so it’s no surprise the UK gets such a bad name for its food if this is what they get served up.

Wow eating out of a box and using plastic utensils, even if it was the best roast dinner ever I wouldn't return....that's just cost cutting at the expense of the dining experience. You were generous Gary.

Firstly using such poor cutlery such a let down,eating out a box in a restaurant is a non go. Basically looks like a microwave roast dinner. Does not look like you had a good experience Gary but at even £10-50 you can still get a decent carvery dinner anywhere in Britain. This is not one of them. Great review Gary👍

Those spuds didnt look remotely roasted, and the beef, it looked like the cow was suffering with anemia. All served up in a box with plastic cutlery, like something you'd get at a soup kitchen. You certainly took one for the team there Gary 👍🏼

We where going in there , when a woman said "do'nt go in there ,follow me " I do not know where she took us but the food was top 10/10 no stupid plastic or wooden tools , I'm just glad you went in and showed us what we missed . Thank you Arthur

You have been completely honest and correctly downgraded this pub, which quite frankly the plastic knives and forks, cardboard box and poor service before the taste test even began were ominous. To be honest I think it’s rarely worth ordering a roast dinner in a restaurant. It’s such an easy meal to make at home , and you can get everything just as you want. It’s hard to mass cook roasts to a decent standard in a restaurant.

As a 20 year resident of York, the locals stay away from the York Roast Co. We know it's a tourist trap and the food is crap. If you go a minute further down that street, Goodramgate, you find so many unique and delicious places to eat.

5K Subscribers in 2 months. Great start. With the format and the length of the reviews the way they are I think you've got a bright future on RU-vid.

We were up in York in July, looking in the window. An old boy came up to us and identifed himeself as local, when he realised that we were English, he said dont bother, its for the Tourist. We took his advice. Bish bash bosh, stack em high etc. The pots were not roasted , boiled , then cold, then into a deep pan fryer, just saying. 4.5 . The wooded tools reflect the taste of the meal me thinks.

Hi Gary, My wife and I went to the same place 3 years ago, and sat where you were, and at the time it was very busy and we had a delicious pork and crackling and gravy sandwich, and Yes it was lovely! But I have to say watching you last night, we both said that the food did not look that great to start with , and the knife and fork, 'what the heck' ..how can they give you those plastic/wooden cutlery anyway trying to cut the meat..and also in a cardboard box! I actually said this is going to be a 4 or 4and a half, and to be fair, we both agreed with you. Its a shame, as its such a fantastic place in York, and where you ate probably had great reviews, so , it was really disappointing for you. Been there, and we left extremely disappointed. It was absolutely not up to snuff. The Yorkshire pudding wasn't too bad, but had much better in Leeds. Another great and honest review, Gary.. When you took a bite of the roast potatoes, I knew it would be a disappointment. It's a tourist trap and not worth the money or your time! Great review as usual, mate! Great video, this popped up in my recommendations and it's good to see someone giving places an honest review on RU-vid! I ordered the same thing as you when I went in the summer and it was mostly dry and tasteless. It tasted like it was cooked from frozen and left under heat lamps for a few hours. The place was swarming with flies too, and the service was all over the place. Definitely a tourist trap.

We've been really enjoying your reviews. We don't get to London much so good to see you getting out and about. I didn't think that meal looked very good and thought when I saw it that the beef was going to be chewy. Why? It was silverside, which has that signature seam of connective tissue through it, shown up perfectly by the camera. That cut is always tough, it's not a roasting cut. Keep up the good work, we love how you tell it like it is without any clickbait nonsense.

Those " Giant Yorkshire puddings" are currently 2 for 80p in Heron foods. The roast potatoes are a common humble vegetable available for "ten a penny." The other accompaniments aren't worth mentioning. The roast beef was the most expensive element of the whole meal, and the portion you were given would not equate to even close to £2 in money. I'm sorry to break it to you, my friend, but you have been royally shafted, without the common courtesy of vaseline. I appreciate your reviews. You're good at what you do. Thank you for the upload 😀

I always appreciate a good honest review and after sitting here watching that i couldnt agree more with you. They seem to entice you in with a great looking building and display in the frontage. then churn out below average food. Maybe just an off day? who knows. FINALLY!! I see a lot of reviews of this place & you're the first to have my experience - crap & bland, I actually had the wrap version of this at the other shop down the road. What I will say, you did actually miss their one good item, you can have a tub of their crackling, which was basically warm pork scratchings on salty steroids. Keep up the great work Gary, you've become one of my favourites on RU-vid!

Love the honest review, It didn't look great soon as i seen the potatoes i knew those would be one of the reasons for a low score, I do feel for the staff though they've probably been under staffed for a while and their employer wont recruit.

You should always check their star rating to see if it is correct. I have checked all the pizza shops in my local area, all 12 of them, they all claim 5 stars yet not one of them are registered proving they lie and the local council doesn't check.

We went there a number of years ago, and from the outside it looks fine. Alarm bells started ringing when our meals turned up in boxes. The meal was far from what I was expecting, and I would never go again. The worst was the actual Yorkie Puds. Ours were soggy and just tasted of eggs.... I love eggs, but if I want the taste of eggs I will eat an omelette, or for that matter, eggs. Like other tourists, we were conned.

Another good review - well filmed and good commentary. Beef should be served on a big hot plate and eaten with good cutlery. You asked for suggestions for when you go to Leeds and district. How about Afternoon Tea in the famous Bettys Tearooms in nearby Harrogate? You should enjoy that washed down with Yorkshire Gold Tea! Keep up the good work, Philip!

Visually,it ticked the boxes And it just wasn’t what it said it was. Tough meat,dry potatoes and stuffing- that’s the essence. I would be very disappointed by this- after all they obviously spent good money on the outside to draw the customer in. Short staff ok- but it should not affect quality- The takeaway box and cutlery- no need inside sitting down.not in a place like this. Very interesting. I first tried this place about 25 years ago. It was amazing. But, back then, all that was on offer were basically, hot carved meat rolls with sauces etc. We used to love it on our yearly trip to York. People used to queue down the road for it. But, as the years have gone by, the company has expanded, the range on offer has expanded, but the quality has gone way down as the prices have gone way up. Really sad in the last couple of years when we reached the conclusion it just wasn't worth bothering. The classic phrase of being a victim of their own early success is never more true than here. Glad you tried it Gary, as always, loving the reviews.

I felt you were going to break the cutlery in half cutting into the meat there Gary! 😁 Yes I agree with the score, a shame really as the shop window display makes it look so inviting.

Beef overcooked,potatoes undercooked and plastic cutlery…. All in all my friend,that looked to be a disaster!! As you quite rightly said,it looked great from the outside… you should’ve stayed there!!

Evening Gary Please comment on the temperature of the meals as your beef dinner looked cold. I do not like cold dinners. Glad the Yorkie was nice, shame potatoes were dry. Too much gravy for my liking too but thats me! Like you said plastic cutlery bit difficult to use with a roast dinner. Roast dinner in a box, eating in??? As soon as you opened the lid I knew this was going to be a bad meal. Gravy spilling onto the box, plastic knife and bamboo fork, beef looked grey and the roasties had no colour! Fair enough to serve in a box with that cutlery if it was takeaway but not to eat in!!! Only saving grace was the Yorkshire pud. Fair score, Gary, but it would have been a three from me.

We were there just a few weeks back, over visiting from Canada. My son wanted to try the Yorkshire pudding wrap with roast pork. He asked if he could have some pork crackling with it and was told no. Asked why the guy serving him said he was instructed by management not to sell any. We protested that being lured into the shop with the display of pork c/w crackling and not being able to buy any didn't make any sense. Anyway they were firm so my son had his wrap without crackling. He said it tasted ok though.

I think your score of 4.5/10 was fair and accurate. It did not look appetising and with all the other issues you mentioned, it was not worth the price. Funnily enough, another famous RU-vidr reviewed this place 2 years ago and gave it a 9/10, so either he was overly generous or things have just gone downhill since then.

Looks good apart from the beef itself, and looks very hard to eat it while it's in that box and with plastic cutlery, ok for take away but wouldn't be happy with eating like that inside. Another good video though 👍👍👍

That was like a McDonald’s for Sunday roast dinners! Eating out of a box with throw away cutlery! And those roast spuds - had they ever seen the inside of an oven? When I first saw them sitting in the gravy I thought they were dumplings like my mum put in stew 60 years ago!

Never having eaten a roast dinner out of a box with plastic cutlery I do not intend to start now, thanks for taking this one 'for the team'. Looking at the meat I would suggest each joint was all mechanically retrieved meat moulded into a shape that resembled a joint. If a place where you buy a meal does not serve the food on a plate, my guess would be the kitchen is a row of freezers and a row of microwaves - so not much need for a sink. I would have given it 1/10.

I think you were generous with the scoring. Serving in a cardboard box with fake cutlery would have been enough to have seen me leave on the spot. Perhaps trying to save on staffing by negating the need to was the plates up. Do not like gimmicks such as serving the food inside the Yorkshire pudding. To me it's indicative of someone trying to distract from the inadequacies the food itself. Hopefully this was just a one off poor performance, although I doubt it. The establishment needs to raise its game if this was anything to go by. Score 2.5/10.

Gary, I think it looked really bad mate, admittedly I am a slightly fussy eater, the beef I couldn't have eaten any of, the Yorkshire pudding looked like one of the frozen ones Iceland sells currently, the potatoes didn't seem to be cooked properly, possibly the heat or cooking oil?? The price was over priced, the cutlery was an absolute joke & as for eating out of a cardboard box?? Other than that, it was ok! 😂😂 My score is no more than 2 seriously! Hi Gary I've newly subscribed to your channel which I'd just like to say I'm very impressed with ..I visit York quite a bit as only live less than 20 miles away ..Well I've tried both the 2 establishments of this said name a few time's on each occasion let down in the same context ..Fast food roast dinners that are lacking taste & not freshly prepared it's all about the money & not about good value ..I won't be fooled again !! I normally go to ASK Italian in York if I'm not in too much of a hurry .. It's in a lovely old building with great service & deliciously prepared food at a fare price ..Keep up the good work i will spead the word 🤗

I've been there. Glorified fast food, dressed up as something else to entice punters/tourists in. Ok if you have a hangover on a Sunday, but that's about it. Could be so much better, with a little effort Fair review Gary

Looking at this company, it seems the director started all this in 2015 with various hog related companies after working in radio. All the traditional look and feel seems to be a bit of smoke and mirrors to create a traditional vibe to get the tourists in. Maybe the guy had a wealth of experience in making this sort of food and it's his passion, but it could also just be a business venture. In terms of the food, based on the ambience you'd expect something hearty and homemade. I expect the potatoes just happen to look like they came from Aunt Bessy but it's unfortunate either way - roasties should be craggled and crispy and glassy and soft on the inside. The fact that they're needlessly contributing to the plastic waste in the world because they apparently don't want the hassle of washing any dishes just makes it all the worse. This is the sort of meal you'd expect to spend a tenner on at Glastonbury festival, not sat down in a restaurant.

If McDonalds did a Sunday roast it would be like that 2/10 and the potatoes looked like frozen to me

Hi Gary. Another very honest review. I think I speak for most English people when I say that places exploiting Englishness to rip off tourists are a disgrace. The potatoes have been deep fried not roasted. Typical mass catering shortcut. I laughed when I watched your face when you chewed the beef. Cutlery is a disgrace. They can do better. Real Yorkshire pudding is best a s a big piece cut from a tray. In my family we had our Yorkshire pudding separately before the rest of the meal with gravy as a grown up and maybe with jam as a kid. It was a throwback to the days when Yorkshire pudding was used as a filler so you didn't need too much meat. A lot of the places you have reviewed have been so impressive but this place was poor. And expensive. I would give 3 out of 10. 10 out of 10 for the review though Gary. Keep going mate.

Not sure whether it was because the title told me it was going to be be bad; but when I saw all the food in the window and the place is empty; I wasn't expecting it to be great. The amount of meat and stuffing balls was more than you see at a Toby Carvery where you're expecting it to be busy. Sitting in and eating out of a takeaway cake box, didn't make me want to jump in the car and rush there either.

Fortunately we were forewarned about this place and so gave it a wide berth. We had a wonderful meal in one of the many pubs in York.

What a pity you never tried Thompson's fish and chips on the A64 just outside York when you were in the area. Or the tiny Seamer Fisheries near Scarborough. Both are absolutely superb.

A good honest review again. A shame really as I kind of assumed this place would be as good as it looks. Looks like your ordered a takeaway and then sneaked in to get a table. Do they not do plates and reusable cutlery? (I have never been. Just looked a bit odd). Congrats on reaching 5k subscribers - well deserved. Time for a re-watch of this one! Last week I committed a schoolboy error for the first time and ordered steak from a well known 'icy' supermarket. I thought I'd go for rump x2. The first one was so uneven and thick and full of gristle/tough fat that it was 80% inedible and went out in the garden for the foxes. I just had the second one while watching your video. Jut the steak, nothing else but some sauce with it. It wasn't, thankfully, as thick as the first (even less thick when I pounded it with a hammer) and was 70% edible, though still a tough cut. The indentation on my left index finger was big as a good bit of pressure was needed on the knife (I am right-handed generally but am hopeless with the fork in my left hand, which is the norm) I felt better eating it while watching you struggle with a horrid largely inedible meal, I felt a bit of camaraderie going on 😂 I've learned my lesson anyway - never order rump for delivery, it's inevitable you'll get the cuts that no self-respecting steak-eater would touch on the shelves. Note : the store's sirloin steak is very good, well-cut and even, very enjoyable. Thanks for the video, it made the challenge of eating a poor steak just about bearable!

It looked like a ready meal I can buy from Asda for about £2.10 with everything inside a large Yorkshire Pudding. About half an hour in oven from frozen or 7 minutes in the microwave.

Hi Gary I went there 3 years ago and had a beef sandwich, I was very disappointed, it was tasteless, that meal you had just look like sop, hell and earth was you suppose to eat that without proper cutlery and proper dinner plate. It's so surprising to see that the street is exactly the same setting with the layout of the shops and roads as my home town in the south. It's almost identical to the centre of our town. I suppose there's many more identical layouts around England, but this one is so similar it just surprised me.
