One of the most famous krautrock records. My favourite composition here (a bonus track actually) is 'Between the Eyes'.

After 60 years- probably still my top prog album. Wolf City is probably their most popular album. If there is a better album I'm still searching for it, although there are a lot of later bands that I enjoy.

Great discussion! When it comes to Krautrock I always prefer the more "Motorik" style trance-inducing bands like Can and Neu, to the sort of loosey-goosey jamming you get from Amon Duul II. Having said that, this is a pretty good (if overlong) listen. A lot of jam-based music doesn't hold up, but this one's stood the test of time for a reason.

I'm going to challenge your tastes by saying that Amon Duul II is BETTER than Can. In one primary department: the vocals. Musically speaking, both bands are incomparible. I enjoy the semi-electronic, free jazz fusion jams of Can as much as anybody. Although to be honest my favorite album by them is Soon Over Babaluma. And this is where I get into the vocals. I...cannot...STAND...either Malcolm Mooney or Damo Suzuki. Especially the latter... Damo always sounds like an irritated cat scratching for fleas. Unless he's doing more of a crooning type vocal style (i.e. Paperhouse). Then he's actually pretty good. But then you get to a song like Amugn and Peking-O and then all that enjoyment goes out the window and into the gutter. Even Vitamin C gets pretty annoying with his "You're losing, you're losing...your Vitamin C" lines. Blech 🤮 🤢. Absolutely...intolerable. At least with Michael Karoli handling the vocal duties on Soon Over Babaluma, I can enjoy both the music AND the vocals in equal measure. Now with that out of the way, let's get back to Amon Duul II. Chris Karrrer and Renate Knaup are both fantastic vocalists. And I hope you've gone even further then Yeti to listen to Carnival in Babylon. The song All the Years Round is a gem for showcasing Renate's beautiful, mystical vocals. Quite the opposite of Archangel Thunderbird where she's wailing like a gypsy, which I also love too. Chris Karrer meanwhile delivers a somewhat demented but humorous vocal style that I've always found adds more power to the bands music. He's like a folk shaman of the woods telling age old myths of magic and Tantric rituals. Also, Amon Duul II is HARDLY what you would call "loosey-goosey jamming." That would apply more to Phish, who jam mindlessly because they just love to show off what great instrumentalists they are. It's just sheer wanking around. Amon Duul II actually have a purpose behind their jamming. Listen to The Marilyn Monroe-Memorial-Church from Tanz der Lemminge and you'll (hopefully) get what I mean. It's like they trigger the right neurons in my brain to send me into a trance. An altered state. And I don't take any substances to reach that state either. This music and the right meditation tool can really get me there organically.

@@365DaysofProg your comparison to Yeti and In the Court of the Crimson King is WAY off. Tales From Topographic Oceans by Yes is more accurate when comparing two very cosmic, trippy albums. Albums so huge in scope and musical adventurism. Even if both Yeti and Crimson King are staple albums, EVERYBODY KNOWS AND HAS LISTENED TO ITCOTCK. It's gotten to a point where the recognition of that album makes it more like a pop album. It's not even funny. How many people have ever TRULY listened to Yeti? And not just MERELY "hear about Yeti" but actually fricking listen to it??? And actually provide more than two words to say about it?????

Will you be reviewing Amon Duul II's 3rd record 'Tanz Der Lemminge (Dance Of The Lemmings)'?

Thanks for explaining the story behind the band's name. I had no idea there were two distinct entities, just thought that the lineup shifted at some point before the original band broke big. Interestingly I've never been a huge Amon Duul II fan despite my appetite for krautrock and psychedelia, always thought that the other major German bands around this time were more engaging. I may have to give them another try.

I bought this album because I heard Archangel Thunderbird and I was a bit disappointed because I thought it would be more operatic, but I just listened to it again so thank you for reminding me of it. It was a very good listen while walking the dog.

@@365DaysofProg My dog hates going for walks. The only way I can motivate myself to drag him reluctantly to the park for his own good, is to have something decent to listen to. Yeti was good 'dragging a dog to the park music'.🤣
