The only thing I didn't like about his edit was the removal of two carefully chosen character shots. He removed Leia's brief distraught reaction as the weapon fired, then later he removed the brief shot of Tarkin right before the Death Star exploded. These shots were specifically chosen by the editors to drive our emotions and focus the scenes. Seeing Leia's helpless and angry expression makes us feel just a little bit worse about the planet's destruction, and the shot of Tarkin before the station blows gives us a satisfying reminder that his overconfident ass just bit the dust in a gloriously surprising way.
I dunno, Leia's reaction isn't all that compelling there. Carrie Fisher herself said that it was challenging to act that scene because there weren't many visuals to work with.
I agree with Adywan's decision to remove the shot of Leia. It's slightly awkward and not nearly as emotional or devastating as one might expect a girl to be in such a situation. I think Leia's immediate reaction is better left in the viewer's imagination, plus, Adywan's edit actually lets us see the planet before it's destroyed, building anticipation.
OMG. This really is amazing work. For a kid who saw the film in 1977 i thought it impossible to improve it sensitively ,but to see it so beautifully restored is pure joy .Well done Adywan. Amazing.
It's amazing to see what 1 person can do compared to a team of professionals. This guy should be hired by LucasFilm to do a 50th Anniversary set of the films and make it the final version officially. They could call it the Ultimate Star Wars collection. Retold by Luke Skywalker, in the new trilogy time period. "Here is how I remember it, from a certain point of view." Then play all 3 movies. After it's success, LucasFilm could do the same with the Prequels. Again, showing it retold by Luke Skywalker's certain point of view as he reads it from Obi-Wan's journal. They could build a mint off of this idea. By working together, Adywan and LucasFilm could restore and recapture the love for Star Wars by giving fans the best versions and finalize it so no other versions can be made. It would fix any canon issues and give a fresh look and feel to the full series. Fans of the Original trilogy, fans of the prequels and fans of the newest trilogy could come together, bridging the gap and unite all fans in a wonderful way. I can't think of a better way to open Star Wars Land theme park and celebrate 50 years of Star Wars. May the Force be with you always.
Richard Ched I'd say George started to change in 1979 when _More American Graffiti_ was a flop with him having the same involvement with that film as he did with _The Empire Strikes Back_ and after he seeing how _Apocalypse Now_ almost destroyed his friend and mentor Francis Ford Coppola mentally and economically, after investing much of his own personal money in a very troubled production. So he went out and said the infamous "we would have made the same amount of money with Empire even if it wasn't as good". From there he went down the dark path and created the ewoks to be toys and didn't put as much hard work into _Return of the Jedi_ and so on... (at least that's how I think it went)
I still think an instant explosion of an entire planet looks silly. Even Adywan's which looks far better I have a hard time taking seriously (as serious as you can take Star Wars) The scene needs extending and to show something similar to Rogue One like internal explosions then multiple externals before slowly exploding apart.
AnglianPB The whole point was that the Death Star could Destroy a Planet in a SECOND. that's what made it terrifying and oddly efficient. The Superlaser is THAT Powerful. In Rogue One we see the "Single Reactor Ignition" mode of the Superlaser.
Wow, I wasn't aware of Adywan's version until now but I take my hat off to him! Everything about his version of this is superior. From big details like planet moving dramatically into shot, down to the small lights added to Vader's chestplate. Adywan was right to remove the final shot of Leia "squirming", which was a somewhat awkward shot and emotionally weak. Better to leave her devastated reaction in the viewer's imagination, and give us a moment to actually see the planet before it's destroyed. Incidentally, Leia is so adorable! :-) Upon hearing that this man is about to destroy her planet and everyone she loves, she grits her teeth and softly bumps her shoulder into the man! LOL :D Now that is a true heroine, graceful and poised to the end.
You’re dumb af. it needed the extra scene of her squirming. It’s not emotionally weak, retard. That’s the only emotion she showed about her home planet being blown up because later on it seems like she doesn’t even give af
I honestly love the Special Edition and Adywan's explosions. The special editions may have issues but updating the big explosions is definitely one that works fantastically. Not to diss the original release, but the explosion in the original scene seems just a wee bit underwhelming considering an entire planet detonates. But to be fair they did a fantastic job regardless. I love the Praxis Effect shockwave rings and the fiery debris cloud, it really sells home just how enormous and violent the explosion was. Same with both death stars exploding, it just looks so damn cool.
Adywan kinda "cheated" for this one, he said in an interview that it was taken from the final episode of Stargate SG-1. So I did a quick research, and I found it. That's the explosion of Orilla, homeworld of the Asgard, flipped 180°. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IH4cvgDVWx0.html So yeah, if you think it looks off in a movie, keep in mind that it's actually 2007 TV CG. Maybe we'll get something better for the HD version.
Out of all 3,Alderaan is the biggest in Adywan, but that still does not mean it gets an absolutely gargantuan explosion. Personally I don't like it,its tiny and gets an explosion fit for Geonosis, yet on the others, its Earth size like Alderaan is supposed to be and gets a perfectly-fitted explosion. The winner is 2011 Blu-Ray.
Why does the Harmy's Death Star look so blue in every shot when it never looked that way, not even in the original VHS pan and scan version before Lucas went into it, which I still have by the way???
I dont mind the cgi explosion but couldn't you get both it and leia's reaction? If special effects are going to be re-done and done well I don't have a problem with cgi.
I had a crush on Carrie Fisher, even though she was older than me ( like 50 years older than me at the time )... My dreams have been crushed. So you won't get confused section: ↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓↓ I had a crush on young Carrie Fisher. (1977, 1980, 1983)
Adywan is way too massive,Harmy's explodes then makes a weird, unnecessary cut showing a bigger explosion (and is still quite small,)and 2011 nails it.Big,but not too big.It is a good depiction of an Earth-sized planet exploding.
You're right and wrong at the same time. It is the Adywan Revisited but it is the Purist Edition. The REAL Revisited has a close up of Alderaan as it is boiling, then shows Jar-Jar looking at the ash. The explosion also sounds more intense. The Purist edition tries to stay as close to the original as possible but it still keeps the corrections and everything else. The Adywan version shown this video is Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope Revisited Purist edition. If we are talking 100% revisited, then it is not the one in this video. For the last time, this is not fully the Revisited version, this is the Purist Edition.
2:09 Isn't there a laser at the middle comming from the center of the superlaser in Rogue One? Rogue One made a mistake here. EDIT: Thats the 2nd Death Star, im wrong.
Why the fuck is everyone bashing on Adywan's edit? Unless you all really know how a is suppose to planet blow up in a flash-bang moment, he is entitled to his interpretation.
The physics of how a planet would actually blow up are irrelevant, as SW has NEVER been about realistic physics. However, the CGI in the Adywan version is vastly inferior to the practical effects of the original and the CGI of the official special editions. Adywan's CGI looks like video game graphics.
Has anyone realized in rogue one the 2 planets destroyed by the death star are so different like the destruction of alderran in a new hope you can see that when alderaan was destroyed it just explode so fast in rogue one scarif and jedha's explosion is not directly explode you can see before the planet explode the fire is just spreading before the planets destroyed its whole self in a new hope when alderaan destroyed the explosion is just so quickly it just explode directly without the fire spreading not like in rogue one
Harmy removed all the blue ray CGI effects that george lucas added into star wars with the special editions, while still keeping it blue ray. Thanks to harmy, you can watch star wars just like when it first came out, and it still be in blue ray.
Leia: Dantooine. They're on Dantioonie. Darth Vader: You heard her. Destroy Dantooine! Tarkin: Wait! Death star fires laser . Tarkin: Vader what the hell? Sorry I can't remember the rest of his lines lol. Darth Vader: Sorry On a serious note: Tarkin: I grow tired of asking this so it will be the last time. Where is the rebel base? Leia: Dantooine. They're on Dantooine. Tarkin: There you see Lord Vader she can be reasonable. Continue w/the operation. You may fire when ready. Leia: What?! Tarkin: You're far too trusting. Dantooine is too remote to make an effective demonstration but don't worry. We will deal w/your rebel friends soon enough. Leia: No. Alderaan destroyed. Leia: And you call yourselves human. Tarkin: We're human. It's all about sending the galaxy a message.
My suggestion: Han talking to Jabba the Hutt Special Edition comparison. If Adywan's Revisited edition has it (I haven't seen the full thing yet), than you can include it in, or do a separate Revisited comparison video.
The 2011 Special Edition one is by far the best, from colour correcting to effects. The Despecialized Edition looks simply dated with washed out colours, though of course it would. And then there's the Adywan version... where did all the colour go? Everything is really bland, like they just dropped the saturation down to 0 on some things. The stars are too big and too few, and the explosion at the end looks like something from that action movie phone app. Clearly a lot of effort was put into it, but it didn't really hit the mark.
Yes it does, more so than completely desaturated grey. Unless there's a complete absence of light or it was completely black, everything has a tint of colour, especially when there's a big blue planet emitting blue light. The Adywan version looks very unpolished because of the lack of colour.
A lot of Adywan's changes are better than the original. There are parts of all three versions that I like. There are parts in the 2004 DVD release that I like. One version isn't inherently worse than the other just because it's slightly different. The only part of Star Wars that makes me literally cringe is Jedi Rocks, but knowing that I can just watch a version without it means that even that doesn't bother me very much.
Prefer Harmy's since his intention is to make it look it as close to the original film as possible. Not sure what Adywan is attempting, it certainly isn't an improvement in my book. The first Star Wars film also won an Oscar for Best Editing (not that Lucas was particularly arsed about that 20 years later) so straight away any version will lose points with me when the creator is arrogant enough to think they can edit it better.
Sorry, but that Adywan explosion looks awful. Far worse than the other two. The work done on the Emperor was very good, but this looks like a video game explosion.
