Vader outright lied to him about Luke being son of Anakin ("How is that possible?") when you know at the beginning he is fully aware Luke is Skywalker (That's it! The Rebels are there and I'm sure that Skywalker is with them. Set your course to the Hoth system!"). He planned betrayal for some time.

I understand, but they wanted to make him 100% look like Palpatine from Episode 3. The older version of him wouldn't give us the same Sith-Lord-feeling. We know that at the 80's the concept of Sith Lords with yellow eyes weren't placed and maybe were just an idea of George Lucas added later to the Star Wars Universe. That time is was more a Jedi vs Dark Side and not like today Jedi vs Sith.

@mphylo2296
@mphylo2296 6 лет назад
Yeah the addition of the whole "the young rebel who destroyed the death star. I have no doubt this boy is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker"...thing is pretty unnecessary. It ultimately conveys no more information to the audience than the original "Young Skywalker. He could destroy us" line. That line alone already implies that Vader and the Emperor are familiar with Luke and his family without making the twist too obvious. The addition of the drawn out "yes" before the original, short "yes"from Emperor was also quite unnecessary. The certainty with which the Emperor speaks in the original script with his single "yes" conveys to the audience (in both the very original performance and the unedited Ian McDiarmid performance from the DVDs) that the Emperor has already considered the notion of turning Luke. It was almost as though he was baiting Vader into suggesting it. In the Blu ray version, the additional "yes" with the pause implies that the Emperor is pondering the notion for the first time. Lots of small changes that have notable repurcussions
@RoaryUK
@RoaryUK 5 лет назад
The additional dialogue always worked fine for me. Clearly Vader was always trying to hide any knowledge of Luke from The Emperor, and while you still get that feeling before the changes, the additional dialogue conveys it far more intriguingly. Also, it always bothered me how Palpatine seemed to know Luke by name, which he shouldn't have if you think about it, leaving the question still open to this day how did Vader really find out.

There is a wonderful subtlety in the Adywan version, with the hood covering more of the Emperor's face, and a couple of McDiarmid's more bombastic lines/expressions trimmed. We also lose that unnecessary added confusion/"confusion" on Vader's part. I have to admit, though, that there are a couple of moments when, due to the Frankestein-ation of 1982 and 2004 footage, Palpatine looks a bit like someone else. Like Mark Hamill imitating the Emperor (at :59 and 1:13).
@somebody4763
@somebody4763 Год назад
Ian McDiarmid's portrayal of Sheev Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious or The Emperor, is nothing short of extraordinary. Over the course of 40 years, he has masterfully embodied one of the greatest supervillains of all time, leaving an indelible mark in the following iconic Star Wars productions: Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983) Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999) Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (2004, re-release) Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005) Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (2011, re-release) Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) Star Wars: The Bad Batch (2021-2024, television series) Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022, television series) Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi (2022, voice in television series) It's truly incredible how Ian McDiarmid has consistently brought this iconic character to life. His ability to evolve the portrayal of the Emperor as he ages is nothing short of remarkable. Whether he's portraying the character as enigmatic and self-assured, subtly challenging yet cautious, or even aggressively powerful, his performances are nothing short of brilliant. Coupled with his ominous attire, the piercing, malevolent red eyes, and the sheer magnitude of power that Sidious wields, it sends shivers down the spine. Ian McDiarmid's dedication to this role is a testament to his extraordinary talent and has forever solidified him as a legend in the Star Wars universe.

This is so much better. For all the bullshit editions to the OT, this was one of the few changes I didn't mind too much. Funny as the 2011 bluray is horrible as not only is the Emperor too close to the Prequels (despite it being very close to Jedi), PLUS the added Skywaker part is pointless. Vader Already said "Skywalker is there" when they found Hoth at the beginning......he ALREADY KNOWS! LOL
@histguy101
@histguy101 6 лет назад
The original dialogue didn't make sense. The Emperor says "We have a new enemy- Luke Skywalker," then later says "The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi" without providing any context. Why wouldn't he just say "Young Skywalker must not become a Jedi"? Does he mean Luke's son, or that Luke IS the son? In the new version, no where does Vader say he doesn't know of Luke's existence. He only responds to the Emperor's "I have no doubt this boy is the son of Anakin Skywalker" with "How...is this possible." The new version gives much better context, and very interesting subtext. The subtext being: the Emperor refers to Anakin as a different person, even when speaking to Vader(Who IS Anakin), and the power play that happens later in the film, and the next film has already begun. Vader knows who Luke is, and even know he's his son. The Emperor says so.
@gameking8809

@Christus Regnet: The newer version makes less sense. Why would Vader aks "How is that possible" if he already knew about Luke?
@Alex-xg8py
@Alex-xg8py 6 лет назад
Exactly Gameking. If they omitted the part where Vader says "Skywalker is there" when they find Hoth, it would fit better. But the fact Vader says that line prior to this makes it seems silly for Vader to then go "how is it possible I have a son?" lol
@histguy101
@histguy101 6 лет назад
Gameking When Vader says "How...is this possible?" he's responding to the Emperor's assertion that Luke is the son of Anakin, NOT that Luke exists as a person, or that he blew up the death star, or that he was involved with Obi-Wan, all of which Vader knows, and never says he didn't know. He might already know that Luke is his son, or he might not. His reveal comes later in the film, when he reveals to Luke that he is Anakin, and wants to overthrow the Emperor.

I don't understand how people prefer the final revised version (with all due respect to other people's opinions). I mean, in the blu-ray version Palpatine expresses his belief that Luke is the son of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, then the latter asks how it's possible, Palpatine replies that he knows it is the truth, etc. I, personally, think that blu-ray version is significantly better.

The Emperor definitely 👍 Looks better in The Adywan Revistited Version seeing The Emperor half covered face makes him look creepier and Darth Vader looks like he is listening to him. In The 2011 Blu-Ray The Emperor looks too cartoonish in HD it’s hard to take him seriously and Darth Vader looks like he is avoiding eye 👁️ contact with The Emperor too with his head tilted in some scenes.

That's the worst thing about all altered editions by George: Everything he "aprooved" looked worse than ever! Jabba in Episode IV, then the updated, yet even faker looking Jabba on the DVDs, this puffy-looking halloween-masked Episode III - McDiarmid... could've made the Prequels less fake-looking for less money, instead of poorly inserting instantly dated effects into classical movies. Long story short... I like this effect here. But it's not part of my unspecializeds blu-rays, so...

I prefer the revenge of the Sith look as he looked intimidating and old. While I don't hate the return of the Jedi look he comes across as just looking old and not really the most powerful sith Lord of all time.

But since this only takes place a couple years before ROTJ he should already look like that at this point.

actually he is still Ian Micdiarmid, he played emperor in ep6 and then the prequels, Special edition reinserted Ian into ep5 but adywan tweak it to look nore like his look in ep6, since the special edition looks too much like ep3
