On this week's episode of The MacRumors Show, we revisit the experience of using Apple Vision Pro and talk through our first impressions of the iOS 18 public beta.
Apple's Vision Pro headset is now available in the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore, prompting renewed interest in the spatial computing device. We discuss our thoughts on the best aspects of the Vision Pro, such as immersive video, spatial photos and video, gestures, and UI design, as well as its shortcomings, such as weight and comfort, video passthrough in dark environments, limited content, and general usefulness.
Earlier this week, Apple released the first public beta of iOS 18, bringing the new software to the general public for the first time since the Worldwide Developers Conference in June. Apple has seeded three developer betas so far, and the first public beta includes the same content that's in the third developer beta. We talk over our thoughts on ‌iOS 18‌'s new Home screen and Control Center customization features, the redesigned Photos app, and more.
Let us know what you think about the experience of using the Vision Pro headset and the ‌iOS 18‌ beta in the comments.

Definitely sympathetic to a lot of Hartley's criticisms, I've had the Vision Pro since launch in February and it took a good while to get used to. My neck was super sore after wearing it a lot the first few days and it's unfortunately something that you really have to get used to. A few recommendations I have for Hartley is one, make sure you have the right light seal size. The process of scanning your face with your phone is notoriously inaccurate and has given me multiple different sizings, so don't rely on that to get it right. The improper light seal can absolutely cause severe discomfort. I'd recommend going to an apple store and just trying out a ton of different sizes to try and find the best fit. Also something I've found to be helpful especially when using the solo knit band, don't tighten it too much! There's a tendency to want the headset to be snug on your face and not move, but by clamping it down so tight, you greatly exacerbate fatigue and it can get very uncomfortable very quickly. I'd recommend loosening the knob completely, leaning your head back and rest the headset on your face. Then slowly tighten the knob until your barely feel it tighten on the back of your head and face. I've found that to greatly lessen the fatigue and discomfort and I can now comfortably wear it for several hours daily! But I agree the weight is unacceptable and I really wish they went with some sort of polycarbonate or carbon fiber that's still durable but much lighter. I have to imagine they will do so with the rumored cheaper version. That's all I've got, hope you're able to enjoy your Vision Pro more Hartley in the future and keep up the great work! Love the show!

I've had the vision pro since launch day and have the quest 2 since launch as well. The vision pro is definitely of higher quality but the amount and quality of games I can play on the quest 2 are far better!

I just got one recently -- I don't think the weight/fit is the problem, maybe my head is just huge -- the problem is the field of view is so incredibly small, it is NOT immersive. We need something that goes all the way to peripheral vision.

I promise you’ll get used to the weight. I've been using it since February and good with it. The light seal fit is the key to the comfort.

Suggest going to an Apple Store and trying on different size Light Seals and Straps. The app’s recommended sizes for me were not the most comfortable option available, easy to exchange (within the return period). I love the Vision Pro and use it everyday. I can’t tell if Hartley is using the Solo Knit band only (I can’t wear it on its own for more than 20 mins). The Dual Loop strap works for me and can wear the Vision Pro indefinitely but we all have different head and face sizes and shapes.

I have had the AVP for around two months now. I'm up to being able to use it for around 3-4 hours per session. I had to fiddle a lot with the straps to find a good fit. I use it mainly with my mac to turn off the world around me and increase focus. There has been several occasions lately where I forgot that I had it on me. Watching a 2h+ movie is no problem at all for me. But yes, I do get the 'divers mask' ring on my face which is not so nice.

I found the most comfort with Apple Vision pro was having the dual loop- with it not tightened, i feel tightening it too much makes it feel pulled against and very uncomfortable but having it tighetened enough to sit there and kind of resting there was far more comfortable

The Vision Pro defo has potential. It’s impressive but they have to make a cheaper and lighter variant next for it to be a successful product. That being said it is early days yet.

Have you tried a lightseal in a different size? I went from 25w to 33w and it was much better. There is a supportsite for changing the lightseals

I really don’t understand how Apple could mess up so hard. It’s *obvious* that the weight is the most important thing. I’m using the Quest 3 for about 7 months now every evening, often 6 hours and more. Sometimes it get’s a bit sweaty und I have to move it a bit but it never gets uncomfortable, I often even go around in the house without taking it off just listening to something. It has improved quite a bit over the last few months as well, btw.

Andru Edwards said he has no problem with the Vision Pro at all, in terms of weight and comfort, I think it’s about facial structure and neck strength if I’m getting it right

You guys keep complaining about the fit/comfort and yet haven’t tried third party straps, e.g. ANNAPRO. Like every other HMD I’ve ever owned, you have to customize the straps. Seriously guys, get a grip… uh er strap!
@oliverniehaus7159

Nah, you shouldn’t have to spend even more money for 3rd party accessories to make a device comfortable that already costs 4k

I haven't tried it yet, but I saw one in the Apple store in London and the material felt surprisingly rough and scratchy. Until they redesign it so it doesn't look like a pair of goggles that make you look like an alien, I can't see myself using one. I can't really see it taking off in a big way until it can feel like a pair of sunglasses that also seal off the gaps with soft material. But that's gonna take some serious miniaturisation and improvements to battery technology. Why don't they wire some of the tech so that it is elsewhere rather than on your face!

Dual-strap and I’m good to go for a few hours. More and more spatial media to come! Clip the puck battery on the back of the strap for weight distribution. I think Apple had to go with aluminum for thermal reasons.

You need the adapter to use the duo-loop, you will see a significant comfort improvement. But, definitely, for most people, a second generation of this device, or maybe a third, that will kick off! For now, only the ones that really like the technology. I use it everyday and love it.

I enjoyed your episode. I just did the video as a long term apple guy. And I just did the demo. Wish I could create immersive video and take video on that thing because family memories like the birthday cake scene are priceless if possible. RU-vid has a lot of 3d camera options that might work. Do you guys know if 3rd party recordings will work in the future?

I just placed an order for the ANNAPRO strap and I can't wait! Hartley's argument against 3rd party accessories sounds obtuse to me--they're a fraction of the AVP price and greatly improve comfortability. Why would you not want a better experience if it was right there for you to have?

I don’t have any pain issues but the weight does get to you after extended use. It’s a shame for such a futuristic device that Apple didn’t elect to invent a new kind of carbon fibre composite as a material which might have cut the weight in half.

I get that it isn’t a featherweight but having used mine 2-8 hours a day for most days since US launch I don’t get the it is unbearable to wear. I don’t know if it just fits some beater than others but if it fit everyone like they describe nobody would keep it. I do agree that even if it is better than other headsets the low light level pass through isn’t that great. Completely replaced my iPad and some Mac usage.

Went for a demo in the UK, ready to buy. Loved everything I saw except the blurry spacial videos, blurry immersive videos and the pain in my neck after 10 minutes. I’m not sure they got my eye prescription right, or the light seal. I wanted to see Mac virtual display and more 2D tv content, but my sore neck was glad we stopped. Also, the sound was inaudible except when doing the set up. I hear it’s amazing. The most impressive thing was how things stay where they are, with no lag.

Thanks for telling the truth about the product. It’s what most people know telling the truth makes Apple accountable for what they make people don’t get ripped off.

With all due respect (sincerely), Hartley is the same guy that finds anything larger than an iPhone 6 outrageously large and uncomfortable. It would be hard *not* to predict this would be the case with the vision. Not saying it’s not; I have no personal experience. But the comfort-level threshold may be very low with Hartley and Dan, and it would be “a shame” to condemn the product based on their personal comfort-level 🙂

I have had an AVP for a couple months and use it every day. The fit and comfort is definitely subjective as I don’t find it uncomfortable and my face doesn’t sweat. I am able to sit down and watch a 3 hour movie and forget that I am wearing a headset. After that I am ready to take a break, but you should take breaks from whatever screen you are using.

As neither of you wear prescription glasses, I am here to tell you the Holy Grail is not some kind of AR glasses. I made the mistake of getting some chunky framed really cool glasses that I was stuck with for a year. By the end of the day, I had a red mark across the top of my nose and the top of both of my ears. They really weren’t all that heavy at all. But they were heavy enough! I can only imagine a couple of cameras, a screen or two, a few microphones, and some batteries and I would be over it within a couple of hours.

Not making fun, but maybe its because your head is small. I use my AVP everyday for at least 2-4 hours since launch. I also took about 4 flights with it. I love it, and i think you need to realize that apple is about premium quality, you know damn well, they were not gonna make this out of plastic.

I can almost physically feel the discomfort because I had a similar reaction to the original head strap of the Oculus Quest - which was completely solved by a third-party head strap. And I do understand the logic of not wanting to spend more money on comfort for a product as expensive as the Apple Vision Pro (e.g. double(!) solo band as recommend by SadlyItsBradley and others) - but it's still not a good idea.

Great show. I’m shocked Apple did not ship a different strap with the second role out. The weight became such an issue here in America Apple responded with requests to take it into an Apple Store to get the light seal refitted. The Mac mirroring can be adjusted in the display settings. Adjusting the resolution or aspect there can make it clearer

The comfort of AVP I doubt was an oversight from Apple, they basically prioritized form over function. Not the first time and won't be the last that Apple does that.
