@@CaptainFisticuffs0 The jewel boss from Rock Star is reused as the second boss in Planet Robobot and the initials HR used on HR-H from 64 and HR-D3 from Return To Dreamland stand for Haltmann Robotics.
18 years. Long after the trilogy ended. It was sort of a subtle collection of games and imagination as time passed than a long and methodology planned out connection. If anything Star Allies is more connected to what I'll call, the Kirby Wii series.
You raise a really interesting point about thematic trilogies and their meanings, but you performed a mostly textual analysis. I would have loved to see you delve more into the themes and motifs the games share, but this was an excellent look at these games regardless.
For a cute game like Kirby, all-loving heroes facing the most darkest and threatening villains who invaded the sugary sweet fantasy world in fiction is nothing new. I mean, Care Bears or MLP aren't afraid to show the darker side when it comes to fighting disturbing villains. That trope is called _"Vile Villain, Saccharine Show"_ which it's one of the my favorite tropes that got me interested and that actually fits for Kirby to make the games more challenging and complex.
@@BergmitetheBlueandPointy0712 I mean, TV Tropes is just a bunch of fiction enthusiasts editing a wiki. There's nothing "official" about either name. If it's accurate and people know what you're talking about, it works.
32:00 surprised you didn’t mention the connection between “Ado” in KDL3 and Adeleine in 64. Although they haven’t confirmed to be the same character to this day, the fact they are similar in both appearance and abilities should be of note when considering their roles in the Dark Matter Trilogy
True but the fact that they went out of their way to label Dark Nebula as a member of the Dark Matter species but haven’t said anything about Ado/Adeleine, even a “oh we didn’t know that it was the same character when we localized 64” makes some people consider them separate characters. I personally believe they are but I guess some people aren’t convinced which is probably why it wasn’t mentioned in this video.
How is this not a narrative-driven trilogy? While not linear, both dreamland 2 and kirby64 source their story from the universal conflict made clear in dreamland 3.
I mostly wanted to make the distinction between this being a stylistic trilogy because I found the elements that are shared between games much more interesting than the story with dark matter itself, and I found that it would be more substantive and interesting if I covered that stuff rather than cover the whole Dark matter narrative
The storylines get resolved the end of each game The only real progress in each story are Dark Matter getting more widespread Other than that they're pretty self-contained
This was an awesome review of the DM trilogy. I remember my uncle bought me Kirby 64 back in the day, I played the shit out of it and never knew about the true ending battle until years later. Great stuff, I also like the various copy ability mechanics they experimented with throughout this series, more games need this kind of experiementation! 💎 Also your faceless profile picture is going to give me nightmares...
7:06 Says Kirby can't inhale while partnered with Coo. But at 10:50 Shows Kirby inhaling an enemy while partnered with Coo. 38:40 I don't remember Miracle Matter's Invulnerability working like that. I know he's Invincible while in his icosahedron form, but I'm not sure on his elemental forms having defenses against other element attacks. I'll need to re-fight him again to make sure though. Rest of the info is good though.
Not a bad video honestly, though I think the game footage could better align with what you're talking about. You'll often mention certain abilities or mechanics, but the video shows some generic gameplay footage instead of the ability or mechanic being described. I just think more specific footage would make the video a bit easier to follow, especially for viewers who aren't familiar with these games.
Great video loved all of the introductory details! Your Kirby Air Ride review was also very informative. Would love to see more stuff like this from your channel, very cool 👍
This is a rly good video esp for people who are just learning about kirby :) yet still enjoyable for someone who knows about it..... i wish you more views and subs, this video is crisp and clear!!!
This is a great retrospective! I'm glad to see these games get the attention they deserve! By the way, you don't actually need to get copy abilities during the Miracle Matter fight. Spitting out the projectiles also works to damage the corresponding form of Miracle Matter.
The one thing I take issue with is that the Dark Matter trilogy isn’t strictly a fan designation. It’s been an explicit narrative trilogy according to Nintendo and HAL for a while now. Ironically, they’ve been heavily pushing for the segregation of the original KDL1 due to the existence of Spring Breeze and Revenge of the King, and tend to group DL1 with Kirby’s Adventure/Nightmare in Dreamland and Super Star/Super Star Ultra, and those three all focus on artifacts related to the Nova (The starry path of fountains in SS/U, the specific fountain of dreams that starts the path in Adventure/NiDL, and the sparkling stars that form a small part of the energy of the starry path in KDL/Spring Breeze & RotK)
This was, AWESOME!! I never got to play any of these 3 games and seeing you delve into the wonders and lore of each game was entertaining to watch and listen to! I do hope you make more, as I enjoyed this very much! also song at 18:14 btw?
Being this is a year old video and plus a small channel . I dig it , you should check out this analog horror series about Kirby . It’s cheesy jump scares and all of that but takes the term of one of the old commercials of Kirby “too much kirby” too a whole new level.
Bro i just played Kirby 64 for the first time in my life so no nostalgia factor for me... let me say this: not only Kirby 64 is the best Kirby game I've played, but one of the best platformers i have ever seen! This combos makes for endless replayability. I've just beat the game for three times in a row (last one being the one where i was collecting all shards and beating special boss)... and i plan to play the game once more! It's a shame that we haven't heard from Shimomura anymore. He did fantastic job and his creative input is very obvious in the game. Thanks for the vid bro! Greetings from overseas!
I gotta be honest, Miracle Matter is probably my favorite boss in any Kirby game. The design is simple yet still unnerving, the arena is properly atmospheric, the fight itself is very creative, and the MUSIC OH MY GOD
So, regarding the Dark Matter connections with characters from later games... Dark Mind: Effectively the Mirror Universe's version of Zero, mixed with a bit of Nightmare. Drawcia, Paintria and Vividria: It's hinted at that Adeline made them. A common theory is that she did so under the influence of Dark Matter, but that's unconfirmed. Drawcia Soul has a somewhat Dark Matter like appearance in how it's a ball with a giant yellow pupil-less eye. Dark Nebula: thought to be a form of dark matter, possibly related to Miracle Matter. A very forgettable character, though, so meh. Magalor: No direct connection, but the Master Crown seems to have one. Dark Crafter: thought to be a form of Dark Matter, not confirmed but the similarities are very noticeable. Void: Oh boy... this one's the one that ties a LOT of stuff together. Void has forms that mirror both Dark Matter AND Kirby, and the lore dumps heavily suggest that Void, Kirby and Dark Matter are all related in some way, possibly even simultanious incarnations of the same entity but influenced in different ways. Void also ties the Master Crown into everything. Chaos Soul: Chaos Elfilis' final form. No actual connections to Dark Matter, in fact the whole plot of Forgotten Land sits on the very far end of the "Ancients" side of things, but Chaos Soul itself is an orb with a bunch of smaller orbs floating around it.
0:33 Huh the mother series follows this as well Mother 1/earthbound begginings: weakens gygas by singing the melody of his mother Mother 2/Earthbound: gygs returns along another villain Mother 3: the evil is defeated once for all
I really like The Dark Matter trilogy, probably my favourite Kirby… trilogy? I’m not sure what to call it since Kirby doesn’t have much Trilogies but whatever.
27:08 what are you talking about? by 1996, 3D had already reach full maturity. also. your comment about the n64 'starting a new era' are very inaccurate. the n64 actually arrived two whole years after the other competing consoles. It was actually really late to the party.
What I don’t recommend is playing them among the rest of the classic Kirby games. They feel like a different beast in terms of pacing, and it’s weird to go from something as fast and snappy as Superstar into Dreamland 3. Definitely play the Dark Matter storyline on its own
I really don't understand this take. I feel like because these two games are different, the player would have a much better time appreciating the Kirby franchise as a whole in terms of creativity. Especially since if you back up a little bit and go from Kirby's Dreamland 1 to Kirby's Dreamland 2 for example, those are two completely different games as well. Not to mention Adventure is definitely harder than your average video game today. And while I like a few of the current games that came out recently, I feel like playing from Return to Dreamland to Star allies just shows how some of the more contemporary Kirby games kind of lack that creative flow, and how HAL's approach is starting to become stale.
@@TheDman214 Never said anything about Star Allies. My take is just skip that one. From performance to creativity, it feels like a game that was just thrown out for the Switch. All I did was say both branches of the series have a different feel and you’re really just disrupting overall game flow going from Sakurai’s faster paced games to the Dark Matter trilogy’s slower feel multiple times. You can still enjoy all facets of the series, just as individual pieces that evolve in their own ways. Either way, not sure why that requires a rebuttal on your part. You can not understand something and still not to try and invalidate said take.
@@TheDman214 dark nebula is in the trilogy so you would have to include squeak squad because dark nebula Is a fragment of dark matter but its probably one of the worst final bosses in the kirby series so I would see why you wouldn't include nebula
@@TheDman214 also we finally got the first full 3d kirby game recently with a full 3d environment it's called kirby and the forgotten land and it's great.
