Lots of people suggesting we wait 3 years to do these and after the exercise I agree. Will get on that schedule next year I think.

Three is probably the perfect amount, I think any longer your giving so much time for outside factors to influence development where it’s hard to say a draft grade is even all that wrong if the player was good then sucks after his third year or the inverse I don’t think that’s something anyone can really predict, even those big project players show enough by the end of year three to have a good enough idea to know where they may be headed and if they do somehow make that switch up in ability either way, I’d still say it’s too far removed for a draft analysis to be expected to predict that

I agree. Players can easily have their development interrupted by injuries or coaching, but can emerge after 2 seasons, but I can't think of anyone who has turned it around after 3 seasons. Lewis Cine, Jameson Williams are really good examples of guys that could turn things around year 3.

@@JB-743 there’s just no way he can ignore the bad play of Bryce last year. He’ll be a 69 with an up arrow. Plus all the new weapons will be 70s with ups. Besides Johnson. We also have a very mid defensive line group. With no pass rush. Are one likely horn injury away from the worst corner group in the league. I just don’t see a way in which we aren’t last. We’ve earned it. I hope we do well. But you’ve got to grade the players on the way they’ve produced.

Love these types of videos TFG. A little feedback that I think would improve them (on top of waiting 3 years which I think is good advice too) - I find that your review of your draft grades / analysis is a little bit nebulous and unstructured. One way to fix that would be to provide a “revised 3 year grade” for each pick (example: you initially gave a C+ grade to a draft pick, but re-grading it today you’d give it a B+). And maybe a revised overall grade at the end of each team’s draft class as well - in fact, if regrading each pick would be too much work, redoing ONLY the overall draft grade would be acceptable too. That way, instead of doing the whole “accurate / not accurate” notepad thing, which seemed to trip you up a lot, you can just compare your old draft grade(s) and overall grade to the grade you’d CURRENTLY give each pick/draft. I find it’s hard to keep track of your criteria for evaluating whether or not you believe your grades / analysis were accurate. A good example of what I mean is the Daxton Hill pick, where you said “I don’t think this one was a miss” - but I think (based on the analysis you gave) we’d agree that an “A” grade was probably a bit too high given how he’s actually performed. Another example is the Kenny Pickett pick - you gave a reasonable take which was basically “he’s been a fine fringe starter/backup QB” - but a B- for taking a player like that at 20 overall is sort of generous. There are many other examples where you’re clearly trying to say “I don’t think my analysis was too bad here”, but the grade is way off from how you proceed to evaluate that player/draft pick. I just feel like it’s hard for the audience (and you, probably) to keep track of whether you think you were right / wrong about a draft when we don’t have a clear view of what you think about the player compared to how you graded them back then. A good example of how to fix this is what you did for the Giants pick of Wan’Dale - you basically said “I was right that this was too high, but it’s been more of a C+ / B- pick”. That helps give us some insight into how you’re coming to the conclusion of whether you “hit or missed” on a draft grade, and drafts as a whole. Hope this helps!
@kylebrandt8344
@kylebrandt8344 4 месяца назад
This is a great piece of constructive feedback. I'd also like to add - you could crop your video of yourself and cut out the 1/3 - 1/2 of unused space that fills up the right side of the frame. That way you can tuck yourself further in the corner and still be able to see all the grades without having to edit in post and put grades overtop of the video. And you wouldn't have to move yourself to bottom left of screen either on those big draft classes. I think this would end up being less work for you in editing, as well as clearer visuals for the audience.

@K1ngOfTheBees
@K1ngOfTheBees 4 месяца назад
I think the issue with how people evaluate the Jordan Davis pick is what they want him to be. Jordan Davis was drafted to be a space eater who draws double teams and stops the run. He has elite physical traits which is why the hope was/is he develops into a great path rusher as well. He hasn't quite done the latter yet but he's one of the best in the league at the former. He's so good at it, when he got injured his rookie year we had to go out and sign Ndamukong Suh and Linval Joseph because our run defense took such a nosedive.

I don't watch every Packers game but as a die hard Lions fan I see Quay Walker as high caliber starter that is a bit of a head case with the flags at times. His size and speed show up a lot on tape from what I've seen. He's around the ball a lot. I always thought he was a reliable tackler? And as much as Lions fans love Malcolm Rodriguez, I don't think any of us would want Malcolm over Quay if we had the choice other than for as a team fit due to character mental habits on the field. Quay is a much better athlete than Malcolm. I think you're being a bit overly harsh in critiquing your own team. The Packers are one of the best drafting teams in the league over the long-term. Romeo Doubs in round 4? Kingsley Enagbare in round 5? Yes, please. (*Apologies, I think I mixed you up with Nate Tice of the Athletic, who I believe is a Packers fan).

Regarding the Falcons, while getting most of their board right, I think if you correctly think Ridder would be a bust and a waste of a draft pick that the grade should be lower than 'Average' (C). And most GM's keep their jobs by the returns of their top draft selections or lack there of. Missing on the evaluation of Drake London a top-10 pick, is weighted more heavily than nailing an evaluation on Day 3 guys imo. Good stuff though overall. Falcons probably should be a miss based on the Drake London eval alone as you were so far away already in his production and talent level with hacks throwing him the ball. Imagine what his production is going to be next season, assuming health, with Cousins & Penix driving the ball down the field. He's going to look like Mike Evans 2.0.

GB fan here. I, for 1, totally agree w/you re LB Quay Walker. Imo, he was NOT worth a R1P7 selection! He’s extremely inconsistent, frequently overshoots n misses way too many tackles! My quote is that he is the BEST NFL tackler 6-7yrds past the LOS! LBs Chenal n Campbell are way better! But, I disagree re DL Wyatt pick…to me, he is a bust! Plays like a R4 pick! Maybe not as bad as that woeful OT Harrell pick yrs ago, but same impact. I’ll look up Wyatt’s pff grades but doubt those are stellar! Great show, Marcus! 😊😂

Marcus gave himself a miss on the Bills and I think that is correct. Overall he did a good job of balancing the close calls. In the Bills case, I do think it was close, but he was probably correct to give himself a miss because when he was doing the analysis he gave himself a hit on Kaiir Elam, who he gave a B too. Through two years, B actually too high on Elam. While he hasn't been useless and has played 600 snaps over the two years, both years, he graded in the mid to high 50's. He could break through, but right now he looks like a solid depth piece which is probably at best a C for a first rounder.

I think you're a bit unfair for some of your day 2/3 OL/DL evaluations. IMO it's ok to overdraft at these positions since you always need bodies, so missing on some of these guys is better than missing on a HB, LB, or other less valuable positions. I don't see a lot of the day 2 OL/DL guys that didn't pan out as bad picks, since they were worth the risk.

As a Browns fan, Perrion Winfrey has definitely not been anything close to an A grade. Lackluster play rookie year and marginal improvement the following year with young and destructive defensive talent surrounding him, and then gets in a domestic violence incident that gets him released halfway through the season. Definitely a huge waste of an early 100s pick.

I’d still say F was too harsh for Quay. I’d say it’s more in the C range. F is more of an out of the league grade imo

Wait wait det correct you had adian only A miss & Jamison A+ who c at best so their grade by u A should be a- or b+ rd weighted that is a miss sir

There’s a lot of luck involved and information you don’t have access to except the tape so it’s hard to be accurate every year. However one thing is for sure I appreciate the hard work you put in to give us this A+ content, thanks!

great video. My only comment is about your reluctance to call the Panthers draft a miss. Its probably the clearest miss in the whole exercise. You basically liked every pick and none have panned out, and I don't think Ekwonu is going to figure it out at the pro level at all. As you say the Panthers have been bad which skews things, but a major reason they are bad is drafting really poorly over the last few years, this being a prime example. Ultimately great content and really shows why I trust your draft analysis quite a bit!

Idk if I was reluctant as much as I was in understanding the risk in Matt Coral as well as how poor that team was set up for a "risky" Draft with a bunch of projects. Cutting Brandon Smith in a year is a great example of that.
@itsjoachim
@itsjoachim 4 месяца назад
@@ThatFranchiseGuy Yeah I get that. But I think in a retrospective analysis, being understanding of the reasons why they made the pick shouldn't hold as much weight as analyzing the outcome. If the Corral pick was a B or something I'd understand more the logic but given that it was an A+ and the true outcome was F, the writing was on the wall. Anyways thanks for replying! I also agree with the 3-4 year review being better so that all the incompletes can be resolved.

You should do the regrading blind, then look at your grade after and compare. The whole falcons thing just sounds like you trying to talk yourself into your take not being bad. In some instances you put a lot of weight into the 1st pick, in others you don't. Is the grading format good for the algorithm or something? Because doing it like this, with absolutely no standard for what counts as being right/wrong just seems pointless.

Really fun vid! Definitely agree with everyone saying to wait until after year 3, especially since that'll also allow 5th-year option decisions to factor into the analysis. I had your tally as 17-10-4 (I couldn't go either way on the Raiders, Bucs, Bengals, and Bears grades) with a bunch I didn't have strong feelings on but could at least put on one side or the other. Biggest Hits: - The Vikings class grading out as 'meh' (Andrew Booth not working out is just tough but they do at least have Brian Flores now) - The Commanders class performing just about as predicted (s/o to @philibusters23 - I agreed with his take) so far - The Jaguars class, dare I say, holding the franchise back Biggest Misses: - Tyler Smith being awesome, paired with Sam Williams being an actual rotation player (Cowboys) - Evan Neal having one foot out of the league after being a contender for the top spot on your board, paired with Wan'Dale Robinson actually being able to get out there and do some stuff (Giants) - Drake London being a legit #1 receiver (even if not this class's WR1), paired with Arnold Ebiketie being pretty ordinary and definitely not being better than Boye Mafe so far (Falcons) - The Ravens class being really good for *very* different reasons than you thought - The Texans class after Derek Stingley (who, for what it's worth, has ended up probably not being the class's best corner like you thought), though DeMeco and his staff might be able to develop the guys and resurrect the class (we'll see)

I think maybe you should have a hits, misses, and meh grouping. There are a lot where it’s not really fair to go either way on so it makes most sense to have a meh grade as well

Quay is perfectly average. You’re on something. Did you just imply the Packers offense was bereft of playmakers. . . No their receivers are top 15 Tight Ends actually pull that number up if you include them. Bruh what are you talking about.

The 2023 Packers with Aaron Rodgers had beyond abysmal playmakers. Not sure how you can argue otherwise.

@@ThatFranchiseGuy . . . Or maybe Rodgers notoriously doesn’t trust anyone new and we’ve seen the capacity of Doubs and Watson. The draft isn’t about what happens the next year what they did this year counts too.

@@ThatFranchiseGuy 1. You’re overstating the drop problem or maybe the impact of drops. 2. Rodgers wouldn’t throw to Pickens either way. 3. If you’re drafting a non-first rookie to fix a problem year of, it has to be an interior O-line for that to be an effective strategy. Rookies aren’t usually good, most firsts don’t pan out. So what are you doing playing that game in the mid-second. 4. Pickens is over rated. He’s the best of a bad group in Pittsburgh and thus sees increased volumes.

Vikes - Vederian Lowe was traded in the 2023 pre-season to the Pats for a 6th round pick and started for the Pats. Nick Muse is still on the team - scored a 22yd TD vs the Lions on the only offensive snap he's played Ingram was the second highest graded guard in that draft class per PFF behind Zion Johnson, graded slightly better than Zion in 2023, so in the context of the class 2nd round was reasonable.
