Military Surplus, how I love... Is there anything that I should get in for the channel folks? Sound off if you have a recommendation and I will see what I can do. - Luke
Roll out that Army pack mole 2 large....like to see it on as trip... Mine weighs a ton, so I'm investing in an ultra light pack. The Gregory optics....58 lg.
Used this plenty of times when I was in. Overall a great tarp that gets the job done, I’ve always wished it was just a bit bigger. That’s really the only gripe I have with it
In the Marines I was with artillery, tanks, and infantry. We used them in Desert Storm but as a sun shield. In training we didn’t use them at all since we slept in Hummers and armored vehicles. In actual combat we placed these over fighting holes which were also our sleeping quarters. I would love to have mine back.
Do want to add a clarification. We were issued ponchos which were basically tarps with a hood opening. They had the same design as the tarp in the video and we used them as such. We also used the liner a lot for shelter against the sun.
USMC 84-88. Years before the current Tarp was issued, but we still made do with the old Poncho-Tarp. I think that if I was currently in, I'd also buy a commercial MarPat poncho-tarp for more flexibility !
I've had mine for roughly 8 years without issues. Bought it on a whim because I thought it would make a neat mini blind. Since then it's been used as a fishing tarp, tent, kayak sail, etc.
I have 2 as well, one i used about 4-5 feet above a fire during a heavy rain storm, so I could start it. Had to do it so my son could have s'mores at camp. A little smoke smell, but no holes/burns.
Love the channel. Love that marine kit too. I have a poncho just like your tarp and use it like a tarp from time to time. Just a tip on your next tarp video - ACU is the Army Combat Uniform. The grey pattern is the UCP (Universal Camouflage Pattern) and the new pattern is the OCP (Operational Camouflage Pattern). They're both the ACU.
These tarps look cool Luke. But I don't have money to throw away on damaged goods. Yup really appreciate all you do and the time you spend on making all these reviews. Helps me make my decisions on gear and common sense choices made in the field. Thanks again very much. I like surplus but it still has to serve the purpose it was designed to achieve. Surplus not damaged goods. I sure would like one of those ILBE packs gen 2. Jim
..a very versatile piece of gear, worth the money..you are right ''buyer beware''.. great info..maybe a review on an after market tarp like this ,for those of us that can't find one of these..
The army pattern is UCP aka Universal Camoflauge Pattern not ACU which is the acronym for Army Combat Uniform. The new OCP Operational Camofluage Pattern uniform is also called the ACU
Nice I too have a very good Marpat tarp and had to patch it in several places / but i also have a New Old Stock ACU version in Mint Condition and it is Mint but I paid a Mint Price around 72.00$ plus shipping / can't wait to see more about these tarps
Luke, I fold mine so all the snaps are used then it makes a nice pocket when camped for the night - shoes and other equipment that stays out of the tent remain dry and all that needs to be ready after breaking camp is a couple of folds.
Not sure why someone would get this for 60ish bucks when you can get a DD Tarp for a little more and have significantly more coverage. Not saying it’s a bad tarp, but the bang for the buck just isn’t there. If you found a deal for 20 bucks then maybe it’s different.
Why do you think my urethane side is so sticky? Do you think there is a fault with the tarp or because it is in storage more than it is used? Every time the urethane touches each other (folding, rolling etc) it sticks together. A big hassle. Any thoughts?
I'M HAVING SAME ISSUE. IDK EXACTLY WHAT CAUSES IT. THAT WOULD BE MY GUESS TO. MOISTURE BUILD UP OVER A LONG TIME. I'VE AIRED IT OUT, WASHED IT WITH JUST WATER NO GOOD. I'M THINKING OF TRYING BAKING SODA NEXT. ANY INPUT???
Also check out the british royal marines tarps. They are supposedly better than the usmc ones. A few guys I know traded their tarps with theirs and they claim the british ones are more waterproof.
Personally I run a free Soldier 10 by 10 and a cheap no-name was a day we were something 10 by 10 coffee-colored tarp it's quality on par with Aqua Quest at half price and just recently ordered a German poncho a Tacs FG camo so I'll be running 3 tarps
Hay Luke, question I've got mine tarp at a grade 3 and did several repairs with seam seal etc however when under tension the tarp keeps creating pin holes where the rip stops beginning (squares). Can you recommend a good sealant that might stop this from happening? Drew.
DUCK TAPE (YOU CAN PROBABLY FIND TAPE IN THE MARPAT PATTERN IF YOU CHECK AROUND) OR BOOT SEALANT. OR SUPER GLUE.(BUT I'D GO WITH BOOT SEALANT BECAUSE IT HAS MORE GIVE TO IT THAN SUPER GLUE) HOPE THIS HELPS
Being a Marine, I hate to say that sometimes when you are issued gear you tend to not take care of it like it was your own because you know you can always get a new one from supply. However, I just recently bought some surplus gear with DMRO stamped on it that was as new. Talk about waste, fraud, and abuse?
If anybody is genuinely interested in getting a brand new one of these tarps, they sell them brand new on every base in the uniform store. If you know anyone on these bases they can get them.
Hi Luke, Total agree about the quality of this tarp, Awesome. Just wondering if you could do a video of how to repair them. I scored an UCP/ACU one with a few holes and would like so advice on how to patch it up the holes in mine are pin type ones. Regards Andrew.
He's right about being very careful buying off ebay. Bought one of these a few years ago from ebay advertised as new, got it and found it was full of small holes. Wasn't worth sending back to the States for a refund.
Hey Luke could you show how you are going to repair it and you said it to be careful boy are you right there i bought one few years back it said like NEW condition all snaps full of mud verry dirty only had two bungees no big holes but hundreds of little pin holes you can see light through all over the place if you have any info on how to seal the pin holes i sprayed it with the spray silicone hopping it well help and luckily on outings only had light rain and it held up ok thanks for all the videos hope you and your family are doing well
HEY GREAT VIDEO! HAVE QUESTION: THE BROWN SIDE OF MINE IS STICKY. I'VE TRIED JUST LETTING IT AIR OUT AND SPRAYING IT WITH WATER. NEITHER SOLVED THE ISSUE. I'M THINKING USING BAKING SODA NEXT. ANY INPUT???
Are you familiar with tarps by DD Hammocks? I own a 3x3 meter, just 720gr and they retail for aprox. 45 bucks. I have owned mine for several years and it has held up really well throughout lots of backpacking trips and adventures!
I also own a DD tarp 3x3 in multicam for a couple of years now. I used it mostly by the fire. No burns or any rips or holes whatsoever. It just have a strong smell like smoked bacon. But not a problem, like it anyway.
the best aspect to your channel is that you have passed the subscriber count of that "other" reviewer.....cough......LS (who I doubt has spent more than 5 days doing any real off trail camping)....keep going.
I own one and like it a lot, but if I am perfectly honest its not very feature rich, the backpacking/bushcraft market has far more sizes and guy out points, generally at least 5 per side and 5 down the center ridgeline to allow pullout rigging.
Two myself. Curious for the review. Are they that different from one another? If memory serves, it slightly larger than the Corps issue. Oh and the hideous ACU digpat.
Hi Luke Just to clarify you can put two together and where they join it is still waterproof and is it possible to get them shipped to the uk 🇬🇧 thanks my friend. Clint uk
It’s nasty when it gets wet. Collects mildew like a mfr if not dried out right away. In the sun, it can dry out pretty quick, one sided at a time at 10-15 minutes
