I bought rukka gear 2 gs ago😂 Washed for the first time earlier this year. 4 years and probably gave it zero thought until I read a review . Did ride in some typical scottish weather year round and as you mention it’s money very well spent. Now I’m a washing expert telling all the mates .

As a motorcycle instructor I 'over use' my bike gear. My Nivala 1 jacket started to leak in the crook of the arms after about 2yrs so I returned it to Rukka. They advised it was not financially viable to repair under their superb 6yrs warrenty so replaced it with the New Nivala 2. Expensive kit but I have to say the service from Rukka was 2nd to none. I agree that Storm is probably the best cleaning and re-proof product to use..

I have a Rukka top and it's great, expensive but great but there's a lot to be said for a cheaper top with armour and an old Military goretex overcoat. Nice vid Bruce. Quality filming and lighting. Great quality gear. Ive still got my original 2001 Rukka Drop Liner Goretex suit..everything still works fine on it. Then I invested in a Rukka Cosmic Goretex Pro outfit 2014...I used to wash and reproof with the Nikwax stuff but thats a two wash cycle. Then switched to Storm products as theyre just one wash and conditioner cycle on a washing machine.

I'm so glad you put this video out now Bruce, I bought a second hand good condition Rukka jacket off eBay last winter, it's been brilliant in keeping the wind and cold out, but the first time I went out in the rain the sleeves lower 6 inches soaked through, about an inch of the hem soaked through, the front outer lower pockets filled up with water even though zipped up and flapped over properly, wallet and keys got soaked, so now I've just ordered the Storm wash and proof off Amazon from your link, hopefully it will become waterproof again, if it does it will be a bargain as I only paid £300 for it, I will follow your steps precisely, then I can always blame you if it doesn't work, lol.

@@teapotone That seems crazy a jacket of this price and quality, mine has 4 large outer pockets which aren't much use if they aren't waterproof, it only has one smaller pocket on the inside of the jacket and another small pocket on the liner. I will just make sure I put everything in ziplock bags for the outer pockets. I am hopeful that the main jacket will recover it's waterproofing after cleaning, if for some reason it doesn't I will buy a new Rukka.

When pulling out each piece of armour, mark it with a sharpie as to where it came from. Right shoulder, Left elbow etc. Put a tiny arrow showing which way is up. Mark the outside of each piece. The breast armour has an inside and outside and a right way up too. Mark with and arrow and which side is outside. The right and left hip armour in the jeans are not identical. Marking them up saves time when putting them back in (Believe me, otherwise you won't remember which goes where and what orientation)

Bruce, 2 top tips. 1) Get a Sharpie and mark the armour appropriately. 2) Throw a handful of soda crystals in the washing machine and put it through a hotish wash. (That tip from my Miele Service Engineer.). Regards. Joe.

The more prosaic reason why you wash inside out (based on my experience with all of my Rukka suits) is that it stops the reflective material falling off! I also noticed that before I started washing inside out that doing it the right way round quickly ruins the outer layer - it pills up and the surface starts to disintegrate. And yes my washing machine was/is spotless 😊

Very interesting video…. I’ve often wondered how often to wash the gear. My RST stuff says every ride?! That’s a bit excessive I think. In typical bloke style, if it still bends/lumps aren’t falling off it, it’s clean enough. I’ve washed it twice a year for about 2 years and it’s not as good as it was but not too bad.

To be honest, if I do a review vid then it’ll be a while, I’ve got so much stuff to get through at the moment. However essentially, my review would say, if you want a quality bit of kit that is going to keep you dry, warm, safe, and will last years (assuming you look after it), then spend the money and get the higher end kit, like Rukka, KLIM, Dane, Halvarssons etc. Only criticism I have of the Nivala is that the front outside pockets aren’t waterproof?🤷‍♂️

I am a couple of years away from needing to wash my Rukka Nivala as I have only worn it to Wales and the rain has washed all the wool off but I have washed other Goretex suits several times with the Nikwax stuff which has always been excellent and once with that Storm stuff which I thought was pretty sub par. I might give the Storm cleaner another try before chucking it but it will be on something less critical than my bike gear. I think the Nikwax stuff works better and I fell for the Motolegends hype, serves me right for listening to the Prat in the hat.

Sorry to contradict, but it’s my understanding from the Rukka website and my own experience with my rukka jacket cleaning has nothing to do with it being water proof the Gotex remains water proof even if the jacket is dirty, but if the outer shell takes on water, this blocks the paws of the outer and prevent the Gore-text from breathing but it is still water proof, jackets need to be cleaned and retreated to allow the the outer shell to repel water to enable the Gore-text in the Jacket to breathe.

You can put it in the airing cupboard, or hang over a radiator, next to a fire - ideally you just want some heat to help make the little hairs on the jacket reactivate and stand upright - this is what gives it the weather protection.
