For the final episode in this series the painting is reassembled both structurally and with respect to the image. Care is taken to preserve the previously hidden inscription and the retouching is executed with reversible materials in a manner that's more respectful of the painting. And after all the work we finally see what General Hamilton looked like standing proud in his battle armor for his grand portrait.

Imagine Julian making his bed in the morning. He'd have to neatly fold and tuck all the corners of the sheet, spread his hand out over the covers and then secure them with the proper pillows, or it would be wrinkled and unsightly, and that's not what we want. LOL "Honey, if you bake the pie at 350 it will be too light, but if you go to 400 it will be too dark. We also don't want to cook it at such a high temperature that the filling seeps out from between the two layers of crust, because it would burn and make a mess of the oven." Gotta love him! Truly awesome channel. If one of my pieces ever needs work, I'll send it to Julian.

Random German fact: Julian is using the word "verboten" from time to time and he's pronouncing the V like you would pronounce it in English. In German the V can be pronounced as F or an Englisch V (in German the English V is W). So the first syllable is more pronounced like the word "fair" :)

@saharajvs

The letters "b" and "v" have a different way to be pronaunce from each other. The "v" is pronaunce by joining the uper teeth against the lower lip, there for gets a little bit the sound of an "f". The "b" gets it sound by joining the uper lip against the lower one. So, even if he doesn't now about languages, for default it's going to be pronaunce "correctly" getting your coment as reference.

Anyway, «forbidden» and «verboten» are literally the same word with the same meaning.
@googygok
@googygok 3 года назад
But in the English speaking world the use of the word "verboten" goes back to the yiddish version of the word. Yiddish being a mixture of several ancient European languages plus more like Hebrew, but you can trace very much of German in it and depending on the speaker even understand all that's said if you understand German. In that order of things his pronunciation is correct.
@ash_phoenix3282
@ash_phoenix3282 3 года назад
@@baldrbraa I was about to type this lol. In german it also has the meaning of an intentional wrongdoing/ sin. Like if a kid that gets in trouble for hitting someone it’s because they did something Verboten. I guess taboo could work as well. I don’t speak German so correct me if I’m wrong.

Whilst ironing Belgium linen you often use a metal plate. In garment making/tailoring we use a wooden block called a clapper, in the same manner. The clapper is often made of hardwood (oak? or maple?) which is heavier. It was explained to me that we use wood to wick away any moisture in the fabric allowing it to dry faster in that flattened position. It seems to me the metal would keep the moisture in the fabric making it take longer to set in the desired flat position. I can see that metal would stay perfectly flat, but hardwood clappers stay perfectly flat as well. Have you ever tried a clapper? If not, would you consider trying one in the future and letting us know your opinion? ❤🌅🌵😷
@mndlessdrwer
@mndlessdrwer 3 года назад
he typically places the weights overtop of a section of acid-free cotton blotter when moisture is his main concern. When he's ironing on the adhesive to the strip lining, he mainly wants to keep the moisture from causing the fabric to warp, so he's aiming to keep it flat and cool the work as quickly as possible. In the garment industry, you're usually applying steam when you're pressing the fabric, so additional moisture mitigation is always appreciated, but in this case, something that has better thermal conductivity, like a steel weight, is preferable.
@suzisaintjames
@suzisaintjames 3 года назад
@@mndlessdrwer, I value your comment and am very interested in seeing if he continues to use the wood clapper or if he goes back to the steel only weight. You are correct about using steam in garment construction, but all fabric carries some amount of moisture in an ambient setting, so using a wood clapper on dry fabric with a dry iron causes a crisper, tighter fold. And it seems to me, using a clapper dry on dry works faster than with steam. That's why I didn't suggest steam in my original comment. Let's watch and see what he'll do in the future. 💜🌞🌵😷
