I used to do PR and Marketing for Sea to Summit in the UK a few years ago. They make superb quality lightweight gear, I still use it now, has lasted really well. The company are great people too, all genuninely passionate outdoor people. Tim (the owner) is a legend - was the first person ever to walk from the sea (at the Bay of Bengal) to the summit of Mt. Everest - hence the brand’s name 😊

I LOOOOVE this tent! I bought it (the TR2) early spring 2021, and it has joined me on several trips in varying conditions. I have set it up on bumpy grassy terrain on sandy soil, in hot and dry weather as well as pouring rain. It has performed outstandingly. It is easy to set up, easy to pack. Even my spouse, who was not an a fan of camping, has been joining me more on camping after we bought this tent. The main pros for us are the double entrance/exits, and headroom. We can both sit comfortably upright playing cards and boardgames inside, get dressed etc. Another thing is that it fits an exped duo lw (we have the UL winter version) perfectly, making it feel extra roomy while sleeping, and allowa for super comfortable and undisturbed sleep. It still allows for extra space in the foot-end for gear or even smaller backpacks. We also bought the additional gear shelf (can't remember the name. Gear loft?), and it makes organizing a breeze! It's easy to put up a drying line inside for wet clothes too. I was not a fan of the light bar thingy. We prefer hanging our lamp of choice in the loops instead. You didn't mention the stargaze function. If no rain is forecasted, you can pitch the tent with the rainfly rolled up only over the center above the mesh tent. You now have free view atound and above you. If it suddenly starts to rain after all (the weather is super unstable where I live), you can easily drag the fly over the mesh tent, and secure it, to stay dry the rest of the night. I got it quite a bit cheaper than the original price on a promotion sale, but I really could have paid more now that I have tried it.

Will be interested to learn how it does in real-life, getting in/out in the rain (calm as well as breezy/windy) Some tents get you wet from the door flap, and/or the loss of vestibule/tent protection when the door is unzipped, especially if secured to the side to avoid that "face slap of wet rainfly". The interior height/usable space looks appealing for hunkering in during bad weather, tall hikers, use as a base camp etc. For hot sunny weather, the option of making a sun shade from the fly is certainly an asset for areas short on trees/natural shade. Looking forward to future updates on this tent!

Sea to Summit makes some incredible gear and this tent looks like it's going to be another great piece! I like all those unique features, they really looked at some of the issues with a normal tent and improved them. I'm not going to rush out and get one because my current tent collection is good enough, but this one would definitely be at the top of my list if I was shopping. Great video!

Great video. Looks like a great tent. One feature I love is the all mesh upper so when you don’t need the fly, you get full view outside. I have the REI Quarter Dome 2, which is very similar: good footprint size, high ridge with vertical walls, full mesh upper, color coded tabs and just under 4lbs. I love it and it’s only $350. Might be worth your watchers considering for a bit less money. I do like the hang out mode of this one, but wouldn’t spend the extra $150 to have it. Thanks for the review

I just bought this tent and used it in the Ozarks in Arkansas for the new year holiday. Definitely love this overall. Sadly, the rain fly did have a couple of leaks which I’m sure I’ll have no issues replacing, but I’ll find out shortly. It was about 10°F on 1/2/2022. The inside of the tent was actually about 29°F while I wasn’t inside, and warmed up to around 36°F with me inside. Love the design. Nothing bad to say about it so far (aside from the leaks, but again, I’m sure this will be easily replaceable). As far as hangout mode, I think this would be good for a day on the beach. I believe it’s depicted by SeaToSummit.

I'm really impressed with this tent. As far as the hangout mode, I usually hike with a guide's tarp which I use basically for this purpose. In my area there are a lot of bears. I wouldn't want to cook in the hangout mode because I wouldn't want to get any odors on my tent. I normally cook well away from my tent.

I’m actually set in the 2 person tent category right now with a Big Agnes Copper Spur and a Mountain Hardware Aspect (both are outstanding). But this Sea to Summit has me thinking maybe I could use one more!? The hang out mode is an awesome idea. I’ve seen car camp tents that can do something similar, but being able to put up a structured canopy in the backcountry is awesome.

"Why tent maker's didn't think of this" -> wind profile? What you get now with this inverted bar V shape is essentially rectangular shape of the tent and I'd be a bit worried using that in high wind conditions. This is also my concern with the "hangout mode", because it's literally like a deployed parachute.

Thanks for your comments. I have the Alto TR1 - the 2 lb 7 oz lightweight solo version of the Telos which I used for 4 weeks in Colorado this summer / fall. As a 70 YO I fully appreciated the light weight and the uniquely designed interior space - extra width just where you need it the most. Monsoon rains presented no issues. The ample fly and more than adequate bathtub floor kept me dry and the ability to pitch the tent from the inside under the fly during real rains was especially appreciated. Keep on keeping on!

At 1,657g (total weight according to S2S, and please be sure to state metric weights in your videos for us folks not in the U.S.), this tent is not really lightweight. On the other hand, it is freestanding, and has some very nifty features like the hangout (shade mode!), and that makes it more versatile in some areas than, say, my Duplex (which costs about the same). The Telos is a different animal. Don‘t think I‘d ever buy it due to its weight, but love the courage S2S is showing in pioneering some new designs.

@@amythinks Thanks for taking your time to express your disgruntlement at my request. At least it made me aware that not everyone is hip to the fact that RU-vidrs stand to vastly increase their global appeal by also addressing the billions who use the metric system. I've seen a lot of RU-vidrs - also a great many based in the U.S. - who also appeal to the metric crowd. Sure, I (and all other viewers) could individually go and do the conversions, but a reviewer usually has a look at the manufacturer's website before posting a review, and many manufacturers also state specs in metric units. Having them stated alongside the non-metric specs in a RU-vid review is a huge convenience factor for many of us. Anyhow, if you think we should all just go and do the math, you're entitled to your opinion. In case you're interested, I'll add that the U.S., Liberia and Myanmar are (or at least, in 2019, were) the only countries still using the Imperial (non-metric) system. So stating metric figures would seem to make more sense unless one wishes to appeal only to viewers in those three counties.
@amythinks

@@scottbecker3485 This isn't an issue of imperial vs metric nor is this about viewership, which I can assure would be unaffected (as a digital marketer, I have some sense of what moves the needle). By explaining the metric/Imperial thing, I wasn‘t trying to deflect, but simply hadn‘t understood your specific gripe, since you only now stated it clearly. In your first response, you only admonished me that it‘s a free video, and that I should go and do my own conversions. Apart from your tonality being less than friendly, your point got lost - at least to me. But I‘m happy to read your clarification and know you as a person who is definitely good at formulating things clearly. So again: Point taken. I suppose I was just not concentrating well enough on coming across in a less pushy way. Food for thought before I write my next comment on whatever video. I have a Colmans salt and pepper set i carry when flying (or used to), i have a pair of snow overshoes I use as storage bags for my camping gear, I’d like for there to be a very light inflatable sleeping bag/sleeve which can also serve as a sponge wash bathing bag (turn it outside in to wash and back to dry, even sleep in it in the open when necessary), but I have to replace my missing camp stove. Torches, there are so many great ones. There could be an over shoe band that charges things while you are walking, and then there is the multi tool!

I consider anything in the 3 lb range "lightweight," but that's not in the "ultralight" range.

Three pounds, 10 ounces is not light. Reports of the fly leaking, for $500 ? That is absolutely inadequate, unacceptable. Reports that it’s a bit narrow for two? Absorbs rain water and therefore sags and weighs even more? Sheesh, Ehhh…. I’ll stay with my $600 palace, that weighs less than two pounds, and never absorbs rain water. Texas

Great video! I would love to see a follow up that shows how well the hangout mode performs in the wind or rain. I cycled through Namibia in 2019 and something like that would have come in useful! Also - how stable does the mesh look? I'm not a fan of soo much Mesh.

It's an interesting looking tent! Pretty flash. My immediate thought with the high ridgeline is to wonder how well this will do in sustained high winds--coastal or mountainous hiking are often done in windy or stormy conditions which you can't just wait out, and that high ridgeline looks like a big sail at the moment. Can you update again after you've seen it handle storms with higher winds, to compare how it does to tents with a lower profile? Great video, thanks!

I've got the Mountain Hardwear SuperMegaUL 2, which seems really similar to the Sea to Summit, high sideline and all. It's actually held up really well in very strong winds! You just have to make sure to properly use the guy lines. It's even worked on granite ridgelines

The "hang out mode" seems like a clever idea, at least with the added high poles. But apart from that, I have seen many of these features on tents 20 years ago. And it seems that Sea to Summit is merely acknowledging what most of us had already done on our own- remove the inner tent and carry it separately, carry the fly separately to dry it or to distribute weight, etc. I mean, it's nice they give you an extra bag for that, but... not exactly a new idea. The frame shape does seem unusual, but l would have to see how it actually performs in high winds.

@BnORailFan Like others have suggested above, I would consider other options if you are looking to get a quality tent. StS is a great brand but the price of this tent for the weight is quite ludicrous. This tent is over 3.5 lbs as a 2P backpacking tent. For that price, you should be getting a much lighter product. Freestanding tents will typically be heavier than non-freestanding tents. If you are used to tent poles/frames and don't like to stake out or use trekking poles - freestanding is your pick. Here are some options that are similar to this tent in price and function - Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 Tent - $500 (3.1 lbs) REI Co-op Quarter Dome SL 2 Tent - $380 (2.9 lbs) MSR Hubba Hubba NX 2 Tent - $350 (3.9 lbs) If you want to get the lightest tent for your money, you could go non-standing. Properly staked out these are just as durable as poled tents for most weather situations. Zpacks Duplex (Highly Recommend) - $699 (1.3 lbs) Lanshan 3F UL 2 Person Tent - $160 (2.5 lbs) Six Moon Designs Haven - $220 (1.2 lbs) There are lots of good tents beyond these. Let me know if you have questions!

It's got some thoughtful design aspects that I've seen in other tents but only one or two of and not all in one. The color coded fly should just be a no brainer auto include for any non simetrical tent imo. The "hasty hooch" configuration (what they call "hang out" mode) is a personal requirement for any tent I use. The weight seems really good although time will tell if the tent itself is as bomb proof as the extra pockets make the interior mess issue lol. I also like how they made the top cross bar at an upward angle for extra lift rather than in line with the primary frame pole since those tend to bend down making a dome and reducing accessibility like you mentioned. I usually break my tent down into sections anyway for various set ups (like the aforementioned hasty hooch) and weight balance distribution in my pack but the additional sacks for the same purpose are nice even if they add a tad bit of weight since you get the additional versatility and pockets out of them. For $500 it feels a bit much or at the very least fairly niche, but thats also coming from someone who regularly lugs around a 50lb+ ruck and uses 6lb+ military tents where durability and function take priority over weight, as much as I'd love to cut a bunch. But for those whove already cut the weight and bulk of the other big items and have the budget this looks promising.

Great first look! This and I think the Alto series were the tents for 2021 that most channels were talking about. And I'm going to trash it. Not a knock against your review which was great! 👍 But $500 for a just about 4lb tent is absurd. Combo this with the $400 spark and you have $1k for 2 items that aren't even ultra light. Might as well go dyneema and get the altaplex and arc blast. S2S charges Zpacks prices for Gonex weight 🤣🤣🤣
@magicdinsmore3107

Great look? A high standing tent with a lot of flaps at the top is a nightmare in the wind. Forget about it if you add a little bit of rain to the wind. And four pounds is atrocious.

Sorry, I'm in the UK, sideways rain here means that "innovative" vent on the top is an absolute liability, that would be like a waterfall in to the tent in a storm. And yes I know you can close it down, but condensation is bad enough here as it is, I need a vent I can have open in the rain otherwise I may aswell not bother with the fly lol.

I'm a bit worried about that upper vent, too. Garden hose level "rain" isn't really relevant. Appreciated. But not in any like either heavy or steady rains.

Glad you caught my pun! As for quirks I didn't love: the tent is a little more cumbersome to pack up into its two sacks than a tent that only has one. The light bar was finicky to attach. And if I dropped the guy lines on the ground they'd blend in so well I had a hard time finding them! But that's all very minor stuff.

It’s similar to the Huba Huba space wise. I like the separate packing bags for fly and inner, (going to steal that idea) and the fact you can use them as storage in the tent. Hangout mode looks interesting, not sure how much I’d use it. And going to see if I can do it with Huba Huba.
@PaulHaskins
@PaulHaskins 2 года назад
We loved our Huba Hubas (both the original and current versions). Except the fly always relaxes overnight and ends up touching the tent and getting it wet. This one doesn’t do that and has superior ventilation. The only flaw with the tent is fabric loop used to keep the fly door open. Impossible to undo one handed in the dark. Solved with a ring of pex.
