I’m 54 and have extremely flexible and strong hips due to floor sitting and living a lot of my life on the floor as I much prefer it to regular chairs. I have been like that for as long as I can remember. It’s part of being Autistic in my case and people used to make fun of it but now there bodies are falling apart.

I'm trying to do floor living more often, but find it so hard to do! My body is conformed to a chair 😂 I have a five year old son that likes playing on the floor though so I'm making progress just by playing with him!

The best part about the floor is that it doesn't adapt to you, you have to adept to the floor

What body parts do I have to strengthen and stretch so I can get down on my floor AND be able to get up without help from others?(or calling 911,lol!)😊

our body adapts to the demands placed on over time. Loss of mobility and strength is directly related to adaptation to chairs and couches and loss of connection to the ground. My suggestion is you start sitting on a lower chair and practice moving in/out from a lower chair, and when that becomes easy, then progress to a even lower chair/couch, and gradually move closer to the floor. Our body can adapt and change if we allow our body to do so, but it takes time. it's good to remember that it's taken years for you to have adapted to chairs and couches and lose your mobility and strength, but it'll take some time for your body to adapt to the new demands. It's fairly common for Japanese elderly (in their 70's, 80's, 90's) to sit on the floor and able to get up from the floor relatively easily. That's not because of genetics, their size, strength, or flexibility. This would be true for martial artists who practice on the floor, who are not Japanese. It's very rare for Japanese (not just Japanese, but I grew up in Japan so I know this is true for Japanese for a fact) people to have to call 911 to get help to get back up from the floor. I know it is very common here in the United States because I've worked in home health PT for several years. This is why I really want to promote the floor sitting and living. I know how this can impact peoples' lives. so important!!

At 88 with spine issues I will try when I am at the YMCA and can get help from others. Ì would never try this alone. If anyone falls we are told to call the responders as we could injure someone helping them up in our older state. BROKEN BONES are very common here in senior residences. Weekly in my building.

I am absolutely focused on this and have tried to get a Feldenkrais teacher for 5 years to no avail. It is possible with practice and repetition to achieve greater mobility and strength.

you can certaily sleep on tatami mats. in Japan, we usually use a futon on tatami. we put away futon when we wake up in the morning so it doesn't take up the floor space.
