Great video, thanks for posting. I would love to see a video of a dustcart I remember from the 1960s in the U.K. It was called `Crushaload' & pre-dated `Pakamatic'. It had an inverted draw packer only (like `Pakamatic'). Although the garbage was forced forwards into the body as in `Pakamatic', for Crushaload the gargage was forced against and through fixed vertical tines.
Would anyone working on this truck care if Four 96 gallon toters worth of loose cloth and disposable diapers and my diapered behind were waiting to get dumped into the hopper? Would any of the guys actually dump me in there?
Gloves and hi viz vest don't protect from everything, though it is good to use them . I'm irish . In the suburb where i worked i got to know our bin men well . I would slip them a few extra euro for taking extra rubbish from the shop i co ran with my dad . One Thursday morning i parked up my car and they were on the other side of the rosd . They waved at me so i went across to them and we spent a few minutes having a chat as the 3 guys were loading the back of the truck and moving along the road . (This was in the 90s , before wheelie bins came to Dublin) as i was talking we stopped outside a printers shop and one of the guys began to load 4 black bin bags into the truck hopper . The compactor operated and i heard a loud pop and what looked like red smoke came out of the hopper . The bin man who was right at the back of the truck began to scream his eyes were badly stinging. I ran across the road to a centra convenience store and got some water and some tissues . I was able to soake the tissues and the give them to the bin man to clean out his eyes . The other bin men opened the remaining black bin sacks and found a fine coloured powder in them . .they went into the print shop and found out it was a very fine powdered printers. Ink hence it looked like smoke when the truck compactor broke the bag. I heard the printers got fined for inappropriate waste disposal all the traders in my shops area got council letters about proper waste disposal. The bin an git a few days off work bjt was ok . Hoves avd hi viz won't protect you from this
