Rewatching the Incredibles (Movie Commentary) 

Syndrome is the one of the more non-stereotypical representations of Stan Culture. Most movies get it wrong.

1:01:53 Honestly, they probably didn't put a lot of thought into their powers because they had been consistently told to hide them - that doesn't leave a ton of room for exploration. So I personally really enjoyed that Violet didn't immediately lean into her abilities and that Dash was still discovering little tidbits about how fast he truly was. They used their powers within the limitations they had and when confronted with more, they were understandably both hesitant (Violet when faced with creating a bigger forcefield than she'd ever done before) and excited (Dash realizing he could do some more damage in a fight than he anticipated - he'd likely never been in one before given his age).

Small detail but in Bob's office you can see he has a huge jar labeled "bullets that bounced off my chest"😂

Edna Mode and Jack-Jack totally deserved spin-offs of their own (shorts don't count). P.S. Get well soon, Stef. 🧡

I know a partial story about Mr Incredible back story. I was working at a Costco in the Bay Area near Pixar Studios and saw an old man with a Pixar hat. I told him I liked his hat and my fav movie they made was the Incredibles. He smiled and said proudly "I'm Mr. Incredible!" I thought he was just a sweet old man and humored him. He told me "No I really am. My name is Bob Parr. My daughter was one of the main animators and when they were putting together characters, she decided to name Mr. Incredible's secret identity after her dad. Very sweet story.

there’s a deep dive to edna’s character and how she was a hero online somwehere, but i basically read that edna has been making super hero suits for a long time and when she made stratogale’s suit she felt guilty for adding a cape to her suit because it caused her death, so when mr. incredible asks for one she says no. Even though she felt gulity she was very smart in predicting a lot of stuff that would happen to the incredible family thats why she made the incredibles suits the way she did. Since edna is the suit maker, this is where syndrome comes in. He’s a stalker fanboy turned narcissistic villain and most likely knows she makes suits, and he most likely came to her in his villain era and asked her to make him a suit. So what does she do ? Adds a cape! Its such a good call back since thats exactly how straogale died and the artlce said it was a way she channeled her guilty feelings by giving a suit to a supervillain. This goes without explaining but i definitely believe she caught on to syndrome killing all of those supers (eventually) who were most likely her friends, so this was her ultimate payback.

The airplane scene is SUCH a great scene for this movie. The music, the voice acting it all just meshes so well to build up the tension and just how serious a situation they are in.

Side note this movie was ahead of its time because that is some very modern day entitled shit to be able to create a lawsuit for someone saving you from unaliving yourself 😭😭

I think it was less about Violet getting a date and more that she stopped hiding herself, and was actually more confident talking to Tony than Tony was in the end!

Edna Mode was actually inspired by Edith Head! The famous academy award winning costume designer throughout the 60s and 70s; she had the same bob cut and glasses.

Since you guys brought up several cool details about the movie throughout the reaction, as a Greek mythology nut, I have to rave over what an amazing choice Kronos was for Syndrome's password! So, in mythology, Kronos was a Titan and the father of the initial six members of the Greek Pantheon (oldest to youngest: Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades, Poseidon, and Zeus). After hearing a prophecy that one of his children would usurp and surpass him, he did what any sane person would do, he ate all his children. However, his consort Ghea managed to save their youngest child Zeus, by replacing him with a rock bundled in blankets (if you're wondering how Kronos didn't notice the difference between a hard rock and soft baby flesh, it's specified that he ate his children whole). Of course, once he grew up Zeus confronted Kronos, saved his siblings (still alive inside Kronos since they were eaten whole), and together they defeated their father. The six gods went on to form the Greek Pantheon with Zeus as their king since he saved them all. Honestly, using Kronos as Syndrome's password creates so many great parallels between the myth and the story. Syndrome kills the other supers while testing his robot to become more powerful, similar to how Kronos ate his children to keep his power. Kronos and Syndrome were also both defeated because they didn't know the god/hero they "killed" actually survived. But most significant, is that they were both defeated by families. Kronos was defeated by a family of sibling gods, Syndrome was defeated by a family of supers!!!❤

I love this movie, I can't believe it's almost 20 years old now. I love how each character's abilities reflects their personality. Bob is strong because he's carrying the weight of his family, Helen is spread in numerous different directions, Dash is an excitable kid who has super speed, and Violet is a little Shrinking Violet who can turn invisible. Also, with Jack Jack being a baby whose personality isn't yet fully go, he can have multiple abilities.

I always thought Jackjack's powers were hilarious... and then I became a parent and realized that his powers were 100% written by parents of toddlers.

Guess what: Edna is voiced by the director Brad Bird. Who also happens to have directed The Iron Giant. What a freaking legend!

Edna Mode is the MVP of this movie. One of the best minds in fashion.

i don’t think dash is just suddenly realizing he’s faster than other people 💀💀💀 he’s surprised because he’s a 10 yo who just punched a grown man in the face and not only did damage but didn’t receive any reprimanding for once. like, he isn’t surprised that he’s faster than the adult, he’s surprised at the level of advantage it gives him *in* a fight (with an adult). the speed is not novel but the circumstance is. edit ((oops forgot to finish the comment))- loveeeee that y’all did such a great classic this movie is a work of art! and stef i’m glad you beat the spicy cough and i dig the yellow shades B)

The idea that Dreamworks and Pixar have a rivalry so ingrained that they created actual characters in their movies to sling cheap shots at each other, is hilarious and I love the pettiness

I love Stef absolutely stanning every aspect of this movie and defending it at every turn any time Sam has any criticism.

Your mention about Bob's need to be productive in society is very true since that scene where we first see Bob being stuck in traffic, there was a deleted scene of that where he clotheslines a criminal running from the police on a motorcycle and immediately he's told to get in his car by the police without so much as a thank you, while everyone behind him is getting angry that he's holding up traffic that's moving again. Shows how he feels even when he does good as his citizen self, no one appreciates it and would almost rather he didn't. Maybe he enjoyed the praise, but I like to think the recognitian was a a big part of what made the job worth it where it's appreciated, and you have value for being yourself.

Also the desperation/fear/uncertainty/urgency in Helen's "Bob, throw Me!" Is just executed so well.

Edna Mode made such a big impact on me as a child, literally my first exposition to fashion design, what would later become my dream careeer.

There is a theory that Syndrome went to Edna to make him a suit saying he’s going to become a hero but she saw through his bullshit and knew he’s got something more malicious and so she made his suit with a cape deliberately, knowing from past experience that it would be the thing to take him out

This movie is like one of the best examples of superhero satire. Some people likes to call this Disney’s Fantastic Four, which is pretty obvious.

The plane scene with the missles lives 👌🏾10/10 lives rent free in my head, Also it wasn’t until the sequel I realized the time era

Woaa I just realized that at the beginning Bob wanted to settle down and have a family. Helen wanted to keep saving the world. And yet towards the movie we see that these goals changed. Bob wanted to go back hero and Helen was trying to keep her family settle down and protected

Jack Jack Attaks is a masterpiece. One of the best shorts Pixar ever made and they have made many really good ones. I definitely recommend it.

Maybe it's just me but when they do the superhero pose as a family. The way the spy movie score drops always is a dope moment in cinema for me. 😮

There was this theory that I loved that said that Syndrome asked Edna to create his super suit. She felt some sort of bad/evil in him so she made his suit with a cape. I think it’s cool to think about lol

1:14:09- The short shows more detail and the babysitter had her memory erased by Dicker. Just like with Tony in the sequel also Bob's old boss. 1:16:50- If you ever went through a near death experience, God forbid, you tell me how you'd react after going through hell.

The Incredibles is a part of my childhood. Certainly is a great film worth watching.

I love the relationship between Helen and Violet in this film.. Also, originally the pilot was meant to be a separate character that died, but I think having Helen as the pilot is much more effective, and shows her badassery. She probably had to train in this in her superhero days. Also the outtakes are hilarious.

If memory serves me right, there was actually a deleted scene of Helene asking Bob "are you having an affair?" right after she finds the strand of hair on his shirt. It's one of the most interesting deleted scenes in the OG Incredibles, shame a lot of them had to be cut down for time

what's funny is syndrome COUD HAVE BEEN a superhero with just his own talents, he could have really helped people it's the fact that he wanted to attack people and make it LOOK like he was a hero when it was entirely his own fault in the first place that makes it impossible for him to be one

Speaking of tropes at the start, I love that they went for Save the Cat the no. 1 film technique to show a character is a genuinely good person, in the first few minutes… with an actual cat. Most movies change up the creature and/or person saved. Nope the first save from the superhero is a cat. And it works so well.

43:39 Option 1 he overheard something or saw something he wasn't supposed to see and either stayed hidden long enough to find out that something dangerous was happening and that Kronos was the key to it all, or he got suspicious enough to start snooping around the island and eventually found out the Kronos was the password or found out the there was a plan called Operation Kronos. Option 2 - in a deleted scene from one of the movies they gave us a memorial service to Gazerbeam and Mr Incredible talked about how he didn't really get jokes and wasn't good at making people at ease so he already wasn't much of a people person but his powers made him feel like a complete outsider until the other supers tracked him down and talked him into becoming a superhero. Got the feeling they were the only ones he could really relax with or at least felt at ease with, and also got the feeling that either he wasn't much of a people person or he had some sort of trouble in social situations. Either way, it gave me the idea that maybe he wasn't so taken in by Mirage's performance because he wasn't so easily comfortable with other people and became a bit suspicious about a story she gave him. She might have just slipped up somewhere and he caught it where others hadn't. Of course Mr Incredible was suspicious when he saw Mirage talking to someone before they had dinner together but he didn't follow through on it. In any case, we already know he had foresight because he was able to use his powers to carve out what little clue he could before he died so we know he knew that what happened to him may have happened to another superhero. In that deleted scene we see a memory of Gazerbeam chasing some bad guys with a few other superheroes, while the others followed the van they were chasing around a corner Gazerbeam stopped, went round the other way and was able to stop the bad guys as they came towards him. So we also know he had the foresight to plan another way of catching them. Either way, we know he had foresight or instinct either naturally or something he acquired when he was a superhero, so maybe that instinct or that learned skill warned him that something wasn't right when he arrived on the island or when he was brought back to the island (I think he defeated one robot and was brought back for the modification that ended up killing him) and that that suspicion got him investigated what else was going on and he found out enough to know that the word Kronos was important. Or he just overheard something by mistake, like I said.

I didn’t know this until years after my first watch, but the scene with Frozone getting water is identical to SLJ’s payphone scene in Die Hard 3. Such a weird reference to make but I love it.

Fun fact: "Bomb Voyage" was originally called "Bomb Perignon" but Pixar couldn't get the rights to the name for the movie. Another fun fact, the Underminer is a recurring VA in every Pixar movie, he is basically their easter egg. Also, as a kid, I definitely didn't get that Helen thought Bob was cheating on her, I thought she found out about his secret work. Definitely adds another layer to watching it as an adult! Does anyone else notice the similarities between this movie and Iron Man 3? I think some marvel writers were Pixar fans haha. As a queer person myself, I really resonate with the allegory of supers as queer people in society, I think it works pretty well to a point. I like that they have the parallels of having to hide who they are and trying to fit in and them being taken out and no one really knowing or caring. However, like the X-men attempting to be an allegory for race relations and queer identity as well, the difference is that the supers and the X-men are actually really dangerous to regular people. Whereas queer people aren't. There is a legit reason someone would want to stay away from a person that can kill you with one touch, whereas being afraid of queer people is nonsensical. That's the nature of allegory though, to be fair. P.S. Syndrome being Elon musk is hilarious, except at least Syndrome is actually an intelligent inventor lol

On a side note: Klaus is not a 3d blended movie. It is old school 2d animation made with digital tools instead of ink and paint. Some people think it’s 3d because it has more light and shade gradianta than 2d made movie traditionaly do. But speaking of 3D blended movies; any chance you’d do a episode on Nimona? I think that would be amazing.

38:33 Kronos was the Titan King from Greek mythology. He devoured his children, the Gods, so that they wouldn't overthrow him as he'd overthrown his own father. He is getting rid of those with power who may usurp his power like Syndrome is getting rid of those with genuine powers so he can play at having power. Kronos's downfall was that he never once suspected that his wife may have tricked him - which she did when she hid the last baby she had and gave him a rock covered in a blanket instead. Syndrome's downfall is that he forgot he'd made a learning robot and never suspected that it might determine him to be a threat as it had determined the superheroes to be a threat. They both got careless and arrogant. They both lost to the same beings they were trying to overthrow/dispose of.

it would have been an interesting thing to see this movie tackle the early problem (bob and helen's argument and specifically bob's struggles with feeling unproductive) from a different angle, where heroes really never would be allowed again and bob had to find a way to both be there for his family as he should, and still feel productive (perhaps by finding another job that wasn't so soul sucking) while truly leaving his life as a super hero behind. wouldn't have made for an interesting movie for kids, but personally i would have enjoyed it haha. tbh though i don't know why he didn't just become a firefighter or policeman or something along those lines, those seem much more up his alley considering they allow him to be of service to the public/''greater good,'' plus he could probably subtly use his powers fairly often.

Graphic, architect, web, etc.--we HAVE to listen to your input. We were hired cause we know better, but lord knows the client thinks we don't. Commissioned work is a client NOT knowing what they want and then expecting you to deliver based off a vibe.

52:42 Even as he's threatening to kill Mirage in front of Syndrome, Mr. Incredible has tears in his eyes because he thinks his wife and children are dead because of Syndrome. This just goes to show that there's only a fine line between a hero and a villain. Most villains are people who've been badly hurt in some way; Heroes are the same but decide to use their pain as a motive to stop anyone else from being hurt too. But if you push someone like that in the wrong direction, they can easily become a villain themselves. Mr. Incredible is a good guy, AND he's a hero. But he was pushed to the very edge of his character to the point that he nearly killed someone out of sheer anger, because the thought of his family being killed utterly destroyed him. And at 53:03 all he can do is sob alone in a detainment cell, thinking that his family is dead, and soon Syndrome will destroy the world. Plus, he indirectly drove Syndrome to the path of evil, so he likely thinks his family's death is partly his fault.

Please can we get Edna's backstory movie? Pleeeeeeeaase? Here's how I'd pitch it: No rags to riches story. We've got enough of those, and we all know goddamn well Edna Mode is too fabulous to have come from nothing. Born into the high life fashion world, the thing that makes her different is a desire to design for supers, as well as a genius with tech. Think rich girl who had all the resources to make a difference, except she actually did. She made a name for herself by being the first designer to incorporate their powers into the suit. We see her become the icon we know her to be. Life couldn't be better. Then the cape controversy happens, and supers dying from cape related accidents start appearing regularly in the papers. The movies about her coming back on top despite it. Maybe even show that the other designers were paid by bad guys to add capes, but Edna only did it because she thought it was the trend, so of course because the other designers have some kind of protection, her name is essentially the only one being smeared. I should reiterate: DO NOT ABSOLVE HER OF GUILT. Make it very clear she made a serious mistake that cost many innocent supers' lives, but that doesn't mean she should have to pay for it the rest of her life. How does she do it? She remembers who she is, and what her God given talent is: designing super suits with the supers in mind. And thus, she threatens to start firing anyone who dares to try and add capes to her designs going forward, but because all these people have worked with her for years, not one of them dare to contradict her. If she says no capes, no capes it shall be. Before long, the cape trend dies out until they're only ever seen in Halloween costumes, and cape related accidents never darken a newspaper headline again. Until the ending, where Edna's walking out of a room for a meeting, leaving behind a newspaper showing a super being slandered in the papers, thus starting the lawsuits.

37:14 I just realized something: As a kid, Syndrome/Buddy has blond hair, but as an adult villain, it's red. Did he hate Mr. Incredible so deeply that he didn't even want to have blond hair because Mr. Incredible also has blond hair, and therefore chose to dye it red? From my research/experience with dying my hair, (I have dark hair and bleach it so I can dye it different colors like pink, blue, purple, etc.) it's much easier to maintain red hair if you're dying it from naturally blond hair, as opposed to dying it a darker color. Because the roots would be blond as they grow out, red hair dye would show blond roots much less than a brown or black dye job would.

Regarding edna staying out of the spotlight and helping supers: i believe she has a better position that any super because she has all their respect and they all look up to her for her incredible abilities.

33:39 Oh, I was also one of the kids who watched this movie when it was relatively new (maybe just a couple of years after it came out.) I understood SOME of the stuff, like why saving people is a good thing and that girls can be just as powerful as guys (regardless of superpowers or none), but there were many things I didn't catch on to. Such as the guy Mr. Incredible caught was trying to commit suicide; it never crossed my mind that the man WANTED to end his own life, I barely understood what death was. I didn't understand what an affair was or why Bob/Mr. Incredible was written to have the hallmarks of cheating on his wife, or at least that SHE would have every reason to think that he was even when he had no such intention. The exercise routines, weight loss, buying new cars for himself and for her, going away on "business trips." Being of the age for a midlife crisis, and suddenly becoming much happier for no discernable reason. (Later in my teen years, my mom and I discovered that her then-husband, whom I had loved my whole life as my "dad," was actually a cheater and used his "business trips" to be with different women, and I deeply regretted idolizing him and comparing him to Mr. Incredible in my mind as a young child. After WAY too many years, they're finally divorced. My mom is still Elastigirl-level awesome to me and we're much happier on our own. This was a movie I watched many times with him and I've reclaimed it as my own again. The sequel is all for me and my mom, too.) I didn't comprehend what it meant for Helen/Elastigirl to be flying a plane to either confront her husband for cheating, save him from unknown evil, or both; THEN having her jet targeted by missiles threatening to kill her AND two of her children, and having to save them and her own life, by herself. I didn't wrap my head around the terror Mr. Incredible must have felt when he thought his wife and children were killed by an enemy that Mr. Incredible indirectly created. I don't know how many people can understand this, but as a kid I sure couldn't: A heartlessly evil person compiles a database of people who have superhuman abilities and tracks down their government-protected locations through whatever clandestine means you can think of. Then, he invites these people to secretly fight robots for him so he can "test" his robots on them, making new versions when the heroes win and calling in new heroes every time one of them dies, killed by the robot. He's basically a mass-murdering serial killer, I would even say a genocidal egomaniac, calling people who probably desperately want to be appreciated for their abilities, but who have been decreed dangerous, illegal, and unable to use their powers without being considered criminals. When laid out like this, Syndrome is basically a serial killer: he only kills supers and he has a "favorite" special target, Mr. Incredible, who used to be his idol. Not only that, the people he killed would've been the only ones who might have been able to stop him if they knew what he was up to. Maybe not all of them had families like Bob did, but many of them likely did, and how heartbreaking is it that they took a job offer, just like him, they died and went missing, unreported, and NO ONE they knew would have known what happened to them. Syndrome is despicable.

Syndromes name comes from the psychological phenomenon known as Hero's Syndrome. Basically it refers to someone who thinks he's a hero, and will even create life and death scenarios so he can step in and make himself the hero that saves the day.

The "old school" men are caricatures of Disney veterans Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. They also supplied the voices.

Something nobody really seems to realize is that Buddy already had a superpower: he was a super genius. He invented fully-functioning rocket boots at, what, 10? 12 years old? He mentions having a flight pattern, he invents zero-point energy weapons and technology, hovercrafts, the whole volcano facility, the MASSIVE SUPER COMPUTER AND SATELITE TO WORK WITH IT, all within the one, single room-- plus all those crazy traps. His super intellect IS his superpower, but because it's not as readily "presenting" as, say, super strength or elasticity, he never realized that he was, in fact, special.

This is probably one of the best Pixar movies ever and super hero movies ever too 😁😁😁 love everything about it from the story to how funny it is as well to Bob and his family and there powers and love Frozone too and the music is just amazing and Syndrome is awesome villain and Edna mode is such an icon and so funny that it’s impossible not like her “No Capes” 😄 plus the visuals and the fighting scenes are top notch too 😊 glad you guys did this amazing movie can’t wait to see what you react to next 😊😊😉😉

I've never understood the logical leap where Bob says, "If you wan to do something for Dash, let him go out for sports." and Helen responds, "This is not about you." I feel like Bob really DOES feel like Dash would benefit from being allowed to celebrate what makes him exceptional, but everyone always assumes that his only motivation is to live vicariously through Dash.

at the 56:40 mark when you guys are talking about the physics of hitting something while going fast, it makes me think of when quicksilver is saving magneto, and he holds his head to prevent "whiplash".

This is not my favorite (rarely do favorites anyway) superhero film, but I do think the Incredibles is an important classic in the overall superhero film genre. I love Edna as well because she is so fun to me. Stef is totally correct that Edna is a pot stirrer.

Syndrome is literally named after “Hero Syndrome”, a type of narcissism where you create (either indirectly or directly) a situation with problems or one big problem and solve it yourself so that you can claim to be the savior.

42:46 "Just run straight through the lava," Yeahhhhh... Um, Bob and all the other supersuits have a GLARING flaw regarding the "indestructible" aspect. They're bulletproof, explosion-proof, and extremely heat-resistant... But they don't cover the head/face. One of the most important things to protect. Even when Helen saves the kids from the plane exploding, the suit saves her and them from the actual boom/flames and shrapnel. She's superhuman and has superhuman endurance/resistance to things like explosion shock waves, but she's not 100% impervious to them. You can see her passed-out at 51:35 ... Her eyes are closed, but homegirl is NOT sleeping.

1:08:19 The graphics/animation of this movie were PHENOMENAL for the time it was made. But I just can't stop thinking that if Helen was holding the van/attaching it to the rocket, she'd be pressed directly under the roof rack, but she's not. She's laying flat on the roof of the van, and there's a clearly-visible gap between her limbs and the roof rack, so it looks like it's just hovering over her. STILL, Pixar had only animated human main characters a couple of times before, and prior to this movie it was Boo from "Monsters, Inc." Even then, they put Boo's hair in pigtails to make it easier to animate. Obviously, they couldn't do that with a character like Violet, who needed to have long hair covering her face much of the time. They had to figure out how to realistically render things they hadn't really done before; they'd done fur using FizzT (which they invented), but not different hair lengths and textures. Most of the people's hair needed to interact with wind, water (both submerged underwater and being wet), sand, being frizzy, etc. and skin needed to be rendered without looking like plastic, which they'd gotten away with by either keeping real humans out of frame or out of focus, or making humanoid figures into toys made of plastic and metal (like inToy Story; all the kids who show up at Andy's party are just re-colored rigs of Andy. Most adult humans don't appear fully on-screen either.) They still needed to perfect sub-surface scattering in the skin, (which is what makes realistic movement of our muscles underneath our skin and things like "blush"/blood vessel pigmentation affecting the way our skin reflects light bc our skin isn't opaque. It's semi-translucent.)but it still mostly holds up in "The Incredibles." Humans are extremely difficult to animate, even regular things like walking and emoting, without looking uncanny or rigid, so animators had to film themselves doing what the character rigs needed to be doing and used that footage as animation reference. It was a monumental feat that Pixar managed to accomplish. Of course now we have Toy Story 4, which was animated SO photorealistically that when people saw the cat in the trailer prior to the movie's release, they thought it was a video of a REAL cat... I'm deeply impressed with Pixar's progress in CG animation, they've always been groundbreaking and ahead of their time.

47:06 "That's gotta be a real pain to deal with." Oh, yeah, absolutely! But imagine Helen being pregnant with Dash... even normal/non-superpowered babies can kick quite a bit. Imagine if Dash's powers started manifesting through how much he kicked when she was still pregnant, and then teaching him to crawl, then walk... they probably were never able to catch him. I feel bad for them. Also, imagine baby Violet disappearing into thin air, they'd have such a hard time finding her! I'd freak out if a baby vanished right in front of me! Or trying to give her a bath, or food she didn't like, if she used force fields to keep away the things she didn't like. You'd never be able to "airplane" broccoli with her.

I think the point regarding them upgrading the robot was now it wouldn't hit itself. It was lucky for them the hand came off and they had the remote to use it against itself again. I mean the ony way to combat that would maybe makes its hands weaker material or something so it can't hurt itself. But that just makes the robot weaker ig? IDK. T^T Besides that loved the video :)

You should REALLY watch the second one(personally i think it’s way better in EVERY area. And i definetly sympathize with and understand the villain way more)
