Rewind: Sam Neill talks "Jurassic Park" and "Damien: Omen 3 (1993)

I had the pleasure to sit down with Sam Neill during the 1993 press tour for "Jurassic Park." We talked about that movie including working with Steven Spielberg and the special effects challenges. We also talked about an early film - "Damien: Omen 3" and the hit: "The Hunt for Red October."

but did you see his reaction when the interviewer mentioned it?....you can tell that he did'nt enjoy making it...and l'm sure you would agree?...omen 3 is terrible

Nooooooooo Sam, don't ever be embarrased about the Omen 3. I loved his performance in it. I just rewatched it today after years and it still stands up. It was one of those movies you want to discuss afterwards...his acting and how it must have been to try to imagine yourself as the actual beast. He nailed it! It was all in the eyes, you just believed him!

I still have great love for the Final Conflict with all its problems. He was the best part of it and she had not feel any shame. If you get a chance to see the dish you will see what an amazing actor Sam Neill is.

The plot perhaps was mundane but the soundtrack was magnificent and that makes the movie as a whole to be tolerable!

What I Damien survived was a old guy now and gave it one last throw of the dice going back into the public eye for one last throw of the dice running for president!

Shame Neil cringes at Omen 3 as I always thought his version of the adult Damien as very good.

He was the best part in Omen III, it had many flaws but he made that movie, tbh. This may be an unpopular opinion but I actually like The Final Conflict better than Damien: Omen II just because of Sam Neill.

You are not alone with that opinion! I think that Omen II: Damien is all too busy with horrifying kills and not so much the personal evolvement of Damien. Even though he's supposed to be the main character I don't feel like that when I watch the movie. Omen II is only about all the people around Damien and how they get killed the moment they know the truth about him. In The Final Conflict Sam Neil absolutely steals the picture and portrays the adult Damien like we would like him - or in a way never every wanted him to be. Manipulating and charming but at the same time cold, cynical and diabolical.

@@mikkeljulius7313 absolutely! The most glaring mistake of Omen II is there's virtually NO development of Damien and his struggles with and acceptance of being the anti-christ. It was literally one scene of him crying over it, "why me???" and then the next time we see him he's fully accepted his fate, with pride.

@@InfraMiG, good point. And that also contributes to the fact that the movie title Damien: Omen II dosen't make sense. Have you watched the new prequel "The First Omen"? It's not perfect but it's a damn brilliant movie that totally captures the 70's atmosphere of the original movie. Great acting, music and storyline (without cringey jumpscares or kills). I've only watched it once but I will definitely watch it again. I expected nothing in the beginning but I ended up being really impressed. I would go as far as to say that The First Omen might be the best film in The Omen franchise since... the original Omen from 76'.

@@mikkeljulius7313 I did not see it, tbh. The continuity change turned me off. I know they've tweaked the continuity in Omen 3, yes, but not nearly as much as altering the origin story the way they did. That made me not want to watch it. But if you say it's good then I might give it a shot.
