Rewinding a Large Motor at KOFFLER

bukaymedia.com This shows how a large motor is re-wound, serviced, and tested. The scale, complexity, teamwork, and know-how required by the people at the KOFFLER Electrical facilities in San Leandro, CA. is amazing! Everything, from making the wire coils to the Vacuum Pressure Impregnation (VIP) process, is done at this one location. KOFFLER's website is at www.koffler.com
The motor in this video is used to power a pump that removes water from a submarine dry dock facility at Pearl Harbor. Another video at bukaymedia.com/... documents how the large pump impeller powered by this motor is balanced.
This movie is a good example of how web videos efficiently communicate a company's unique capabilities to its customers and prospects. Can you imagine trying to tell this story in 5 minutes without a video?

I used to work on a submarine drydock in the UK. It was four sections of a much longer WWII battle ship dry dock. Each section had two alternators, neither of which were as large as the synchronous motor in the video. Very impressive facility and personnel at KOFFLER Electric.

What a great trip down memory lane this is. I started my armature winder apprenticeship in Manchester UK in 1960. Worked on small motors to 500 MW sets, motor testing, through college, drawing office, senior electrical engineer and qualified teacher. Hard work but creative and a great start in life! Loved it. The world should have an annual Tesla day. Best wishes?

Brings back memories of my apprenticeship days . Many hours goes into a build project like this . Solid bar windings building and insulation took over a month for a similar size stator . About 3months all up just for the stator rebuild of similar size .

Nice video, I rewound my share of 2300 - 4160 volt stators, but the slip ring rotor was a very nice looking rewind. Of course we did more Mush / Random stators, just weren't that HUGE!!! LOL. My step dad worked at Vincent Electric in Oakland for 30 plus years Don Rader he was a Damn good winder. I retired 5-yrs ago, sold my business to a kid that I hired in 1979 and I still go in to visit and once in a while still stuff a cake job. I don't miss the knuckle busters.

Paul Monaco i just lost my job with GE doing this kind of work, even bigger motors than these, can i ask what kind of money a "winder" makes down there?? for the record i was getting 33/hr canadian, other places seems to pay about the same up here... just curious
@thejavaman53

@paulmonaco1148
@paulmonaco1148 4 года назад
@@DrunkenGuitarGuy I just your question, well in Portland Oregon the winders get paid a lot less. The range is from $17.50 -hr for beginner to $38.00 for an " OLD PRO " but the OLD guys always got plenty of OT. So they were really making $125K to $175K a year. In California where my step Dad worked I guessing back then he was in the $40.00 to $46.00 per hour range, Today they maybe $50.00 to $55.00 hr. The shop rate is $135.00 hr. so I'm guessing they make a little PROFIT!!! hahahahahaha.

@Samuel Lynch Yes, we also know that corona is an electrical effect of magnetic fields. Our sun gets/has a corona around it. The virus when viewed through a microscope has some resemblance to the sun with it's corona and this is where the virus got it's name.

@janami-dharmam
@janami-dharmam 4 года назад
@@aculasabacca No, it is all about high electric field (has nothing to do with magnetic field). At sharp points, the electric field is so high it causes ionization of the air. Corona refers to crown, king's and queen's crown has lots of spikes and hence the name.
