In this video you’ll see how I updated the wiring to an old detached garage in Westfield, New Jersey. Three new switches, three new receptacles, three new lights, EMT conduit, and a pair of junction boxes for convenient wiring methods. All new wiring with 12/2 MC cable and metal outlet boxes. Thanks for watching and subscribing. Please hit that notification bell too.

The old no. 14 wire on knob and tube would carry a lot of current, being in free air. Inside walls it is often in good shape, but not so when it comes into a box or just through diagonal holes in a board with loom above the old light fixtures. Insulation there is usually pretty toasty.

Feeling lots of Milwaukee pride watching this. From Milwaukee and also a proud user of so many of Milwaukee tools. But I will admit I'm a big fan of Makita as well. I've done tons of ethernet fishing and wiring, but learning more about electrical work as I restore and update my 1940s house. Appreciate all you do to make your years of experience and knowledge accessible to more people.

Extra points for EMT & 1900 boxes: Garage stud walls and open overhead is a perfect example of where conduit is the best. I like how you fabricate backer boards in your work too, "do it right the first time" as callbacks are a money pit..

I’ve got that same old Edison-based box in my 1920s house too. Don’t know if it had fuses in it at one time but in later years it also became a j-box and recently we just bypassed it altogether. I should probably rip it out but it’s got a 2 inch (?) rigid conduit connected to it and it’s in a tight space so it might just have to stay there forever.

Good discussion on color temperature. When they first went to compact flourescent it was difficult to figure out what temperature to get. LEDs are better. Also now they put lumens on the box. I had a friend replace a bunch of 4 foot flourecents in her kitchen with round LEDs. Then she wondered why the kitchen was so dark. She about halved the amount of lumens. Not sure about others, as I get older I need more lumens.

you should make a video about tube and knob, explaining what it is and why it needs to be replaced. show the fragility of the old wire and how fires are started by it.... seeing it still around in 2023 is crazy! I thought by now it would all be gone....

Great work Ron. I'd trust you to wire anything in a heartbeat. I'm rewiring my 1933 original wired colonial so I can use some good advice! That said, I was a OSHA instructor for a while and if you can turn off those circuits or wear insulated gloves, I would always recommend it. You wouldn't believe how many electrocutions we watch when we go through the instructor course. Hell, we had an electrician there who dang near taught the course. I don't even trust a blow dryer near water connected to a GFCI anymore. They're good but still not fast enough response time to mitigate the chance of heart failure from what I understand. Sorry, I ranted again 😂 God bless, and great work man!

I’m look at temperature all the time on bulbs and I tend to like 2700 to 4K at the most. Some of my neighbors are installing daylight bulbs and insanely bright daylight flood lamps on porches and garages. They literally hurt my eyes at night and don’t understand why people do it. I glad you aimed the floods so they aren’t pointing aimlessly down the driveway. Beautiful job and love the metal.
@slippinslidewayz
@slippinslidewayz Год назад
Agreed. Soft white for everything but the bathroom vanity, garage interior, attic, and utility room. Our 1933 home would look out of place with daylight bulbs anywhere else. Unfortunately many of my neighbors don't think the same way.

@@electricalron If the garage already has drywall up...what do you use to install outlets at the workbench height and for a ceiling outlet for a garage opener? Metal or plastic? Is NMB ok to staple to the drywall or is a strip of wood needed? or is MC required? as I understand it, the wiring cannot be subject to damage but is the wiring subject to damage if it is set back 24" (countertop/workbench depth). question being....no conduits needed?

Thank you very much brother. We have a 1915 home. There is a wood panel outside. There is still knob and tube coming from that old wooden panel into a old shed outside. I cannot believe it still works. Then we have a yes I know it’s scary, federal pacific panel in the cellar with aluminum wiring. Could you get any more scary. I am currently working on it with a journeyman electrician friend of mine to eliminate thus. Great knowledge brother

Next time you feed a bell box through a wall, just use a short threaded nipple. Then use an appropriate transition fitting on the inside of the wall. Rain tight and smaller hole in wall. Been doing it for 30 years.

Folks, he is right about the porcelin lampholders being better. Definitely do not use the cheap plastic Leviton lampholers that are sold at Home Depot. They have a very poor riveted connection which can become loose and arc creating a potential fire hazard.

Use your safety classes especially working above your head. I once was driving galvanized nails above my head and had to go to the ER. A little flake of the galvanized coating got on the white part of the eye and it really hurt. The doctor removed it , no permanent damage. But you lose a day of work. 😢

Saw the one-handed work at the beginning: "Yep, it's hot." Not an electrician, but I have enough sense not to buy the $0.60 receptacles -- a good $2-5 receptacle will have 20A internals for the 15A version, good clamps (not stabs!) for back connection , and plenty of brass for the pass-through.

That's a lucky break to have a relatively simple and straightforward job of replacing K&T in an open garage. Most of us face nearly impossible jobs in big old houses where all the old wiring is fully hidden behind wooden ceilings and wooden walls, or massive baseboard planks, or plaster-on-lath walls throughout the whole house. Which basically means such massive amounts of demolition and difficult repairs that it is probably better to just bulldoze down the entire house and start over.
@electricalron
@electricalron Год назад
"Most of us" wtf does that mean? Do you seriously think I haven't taken on jobs like that before? I've done whole houses - BY MYSELF.
@KpxUrz5745
@KpxUrz5745 Год назад
@@electricalron I never suggested or implied that you haven't done harder jobs before. All I said was it's a lucky break to get an easy one this time. Anyway, if you've done entire hundred year old houses, I guess besides electrician work you are also expert at patching hundreds of ancient plaster-on-lath holes (which can be quite involved) and patching hundreds of unattractive outlet and switchplate holes in 100 year old beadboard walls, (which can also be hard to match and repair). My comment was a simple observation, not an attack, and I did not expect to interact with you directly about this. I've hired many many contractors in my day, but I've never met one who is skilled enough or even willing to perfectly patch countless big holes in plaster walls or beadboard walls, and do a nice job of it. Clearly that type of repair would cost far more than upgrading all the knob and tube to modern wiring.
