You can rewire your brain to be less anxious through a simple, but not easy, process. Understanding the anxiety cycle and how avoidance causes anxiety to spiral out of control unlocks the key to learning how to tone down anxiety and rewire those neural pathways to feel safe and secure.
In this video, I teach three essential things you need to understand about anxiety, three steps to face and overcome anxiety, and how the brain can actually change (rewire) its structure, function, and chemistry when you change how you think and act.

About Me:
I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...

I beat my literally crippling anxiety by just not caring anymore. When I’d feel a panic attack come on I just thought “whatever, this is the millionth one and I’ve made it through the rest”. Took me a LONG time to get that way, but I haven’t had a panic attack in getting close to a year now.

Fr, a doctor told me this strategy and it didn't fix my thinking about things that make me anxious, but it fully beat panic attacks for me. I rarely get them anymore(it's been around 6 years) and if I do have one it lasts for like 10 seconds and I don't react to it other than thinking that this is just a panic attack and I'm not gonna give it attention. I get like 1 a year now. Definitely fixed it.

It’s the fear of anxiety that is the problem, not anxiety itself. When I realised that anxiety is the same physically as excitement and that it’s just how you frame / perceive those feelings... things changed. Don’t fight against it, meet it with love, acceptance and open arms. Don’t ignore your thoughts, welcome them but don’t hold on too tight to any of them. Remember, you are the observer, not the thought.

You could do this with other things too, if you fear looking sillyor embarrassed you could build up to posting silly posts online. A great video. Be careful what you feed your mind. To feel better reduce negative thoughts and overthinking. Avoid comparing with others, daily morning sunlight walks, reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Never meditate with expectations but with awareness. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Observe your breath sensations before sleep, in college, at work, taking a walk, when reading, etc.etc. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Best wishes--Counsellor.

This works. Many years ago a counselor told me when I’m having a panic attack say “bring it on”. Eventually I just started saying “fuck it I don’t care anymore” and it would make it stop. That that worked for years. Now I have developed severe OCD after a prolonged traumatic event and I can’t seem to get a grip on the anxiety/panic anymore, but for many years saying “fuck it” really did work.

Then since last few months some other things came like checking windows of room again and again that someone is not looking at me. And recently due to a fear that someone has tried to do something bad to me a thought again and again comes that something is coming from back some bad energy or something and I have to fight it and change my thought and it exhausts a lot, takes a lot of time and disturbs focus Can you please help in how to fight this and remove it.

I have been practising the Mindfulness of Breathing technique ru-vid.comUgkxIIDVgnLN8pF_fPOyoZ1nTjbLvvZcib6r as taught in this CD for about 2 years having read about it in Paramananda's Change Your Mind book and taken a real liking to it. However at times I struggle to remain focused on the breathing and thought that at such times this guided version might suit me. So after two years I finally decided to buy it! The first 7'24 of Track 1 of the CD is a body relaxtion which I do not use: I don't like body relaxation techniques and I find 27' just a little too long for meditation. The remaining 20' of gentle, guided meditation helps me tremendously to relax and stay focused. I find him's voice very soothing and whilst he is present to guide you through the 4 stages of the meditation, his presence is not intrusive or distracting. For the past two years I have tried to follow this technique as best I can with gentle meditation music despite music not being recommended. Having used this CD a couple of times I think I will try from now on to adopt a new routine of no music and just this CD as I find it so helpful. I realise now that the music really is distracting and I have enjoyed listening to the ambient sounds around me which I am normally unaware of. I can not comment on the other 2 tracks of Metta or Walking Meditation as I bought the CD solely to help me with the Mindfulness of Breathing and it does just that - very effectively. In my opinion this CD is money very well spent as it will guide you through a thoroughly useful and beneficial meditation technique and I don't think you can put a price on that.

@singularity-
@singularity- Год назад
My best friend is either very wise or has watched videos like this in attempt to help me theough panic attacks. Either way, I feel fortunate. The last couple severe episodes I had, when the fear was so much for me I couldn't cope, I showed up at his house, because that family has made it a point to tell me I'm always welcome there. Honestly makes me tear up thinking about how great they are. Anyway, I'd show up, looking, as he's described, like I've been in a war zone. My hair all over the place, my face pale, wide eyes, trying and failing to stomp down the very real thought that I needed to go to the ER, because I was about to die. I'd admit to him I thought I may need him to take me there, and thought of going to his house so I could leave my dog there so he wouldn't be alone, just in case something happened. Each time, we'd go sit on his back porch, I'd pet my dog, get up and pace around, shaking and trying not to cry, usually struggling to breathe, and he'd tell me that if I thought this was absolutely not anxiety this time, and if I was too scared and wanted him to drive me there, he would definitely take me to the ER, because he doesn't want anything bad to happen to me either. However, he wanted to ask about my symptoms, because we both knew I'd had this issue in the past. He'd ask, I'd answer. I'd tell him why I thought this time was worse or more worrying than the last, and he'd ask more questions. Eventually, I'd realize, or he'd point out, that if I'd been having a heart attack or a stroke or any number of immediate health threats like I was worried about, the symptoms wouldn't be getting better the longer we were there talking. They'd be getting worse, and I'd be in a really bad state. Was it risky? Somewhat. I'm relatively healthy aside from stress and anxiety, and under 30, still. The doctors assure me every time I get blood pressure checks or going in because I do have some symptom like sinus pain or dizziness, that my heart and lungs seem perfectly fine. I have no risk factors for heart disease or cancer, stroke or COPD aside from stress, so, it's highly unlikely those things will hit me. Each time we did this, it was awful, I was exhausted and feeling pathetic and crazy afterwards, but I was fine, physically. Nothing bad happened. This happened to this degree at least 3 times, and now each time I feel the beginnings of that state; the stomach dropping sensation, the one you get when you "know" something bad is about to happen, the symptoms: light headedness, dizziness, tingling, difficulty drawing a breath...I remember acutely the last time I had that feeling, and I remember all the other times, and the one phrase comes back to me every time: but, did you die? And the answer's always "no. I was just fine. I pet my dog and I gave him his evening meal, and I took a shower and I could breathe normally within about a half hour. Then I went to bed and woke up. And I didn't have those symptoms again for a long time. Everything was fine." It's remembering all those times I was wrong that helped reduce this issue to the point where I might panic a little at first about a symptom, but rarely does the feeling become unmanageable to the point where I think I should actually go to a hospital. When I do have that thought, I tell myself, okay, let's keep an eye on that, and if the symptom doesn't clear up or improve at all, if it gets worse, in a half hour or so, and you think you're really in danger, go. Or, if it's a long term illness I get worried about, like some neurological thing, I tell myself "ok. So, you know how that disease progresses because you've seen what happens. Yes, you have this one symptom that person had. But it's not an ongoing thing, it hasn't gotten worse, plus you've had this symptom before, and it was minor then went away. Which doesn't happen if you have that disease. It's consistent. It comes back, then gets worse and more frequent over time. That's not what's happening here. This symptom is also completely benign in most cases, and can be a sign of..wait for it....stress and anxiety. Or even slight dehydration. Drink some water, wait a while, see what happens." That's my thought process nowadays, anyway. Posting this short novel of a message in case it helps someone else.

If you're interested in practical solutions, you may want to know that certain nutrient deficiencies can cause anxiety! Medications such as birth control can deplete magnesium and vitamin B6, both of which can lead to anxiety. Vitamin D deficiency can also cause anxiety! For vitamin D deficiency, you may want to plan a location in a sunny place, buy a sun lamp, or supplement with 2000 IU/d in the winter! Just make sure to check with your healthcare provider before beginning any supplements!

Anxiety is the tide and my life is a walk along the beach. It sometimes laps around my ankles, once in a while it feels as if I'm wading through it, but it helps to know it will go out again at some point. The trick is to learn how to side step that first wave, whether it's talking to someone or learning to help yourself by watching video's like this. Thinking this way helps me to separate anxiety from the core 'me', if that makes sense, and I can therefore 'own' it rather than let it engulf me. Find what works for you.

Perfect example of getting over my fear of elevators (I got stuck in one when I was a teenager for three hours) I could hardly even look at an elevator for many years. Eventually, I moved into an apartment with a friend, and he lived on the 8th floor. Everyday I would walk up and down the stairs completely avoiding the elevator. This was so tiring. I took a leap of faith and used the elevator. Nothing happened. I eventually started using the elevator everyday. Now, I don’t even have a second thought when I use one. It’s not scary anymore, and even if I think about getting stuck again, it doesn’t scare me 🤷‍♂️

It is superficial and the more you except the feeling of anxiety and panic the less grip it has. The less grip - the less tension- the less tension- the less panic.

My mental health has improved this year, largely because of the work I am doing with my brilliant counsellor and partly because of my own online learning, particularly from videos like this from Emma and other RU-vidrs. Not only has it improved my wellbeing but I plan to train as a counsellor/therapist because I have developed such an interest by watching these kinds of videos.

All my life I've been super anxious with almost a claustrophobic feeling when in crowds, big cities, and heavy traffic. No amount of exposure has been able to rewire my brain, and facing the fear doesn't make it more bearable over time. I think we're adverse to certain anxiety-provoking things in life and at the end of the day, they should simply be avoided rather than 'remedied'.

Emma, I've found reading Eckhart Tolle to be very helpful. He basically says we need to stop living in the future and ruminating on the past, and basically be in the present and stop thinking. My anxiety has gone from an 8 out of 10, to a 3 out of 10. It's been great for me

Its always so strange to me that through my life and learning (which has only been 26 years long, not a lot but I digress) the one thing that we think we are, which is our thoughts, turns out to be one thing that can cause the most grief and suffering. And then out of all things, the thing we often fear the most, which is absolute silence and an absence of thoughts, turns out to be the most peaceful, blissful experience in the world. The scientifically-minded part of me wonders if our brains and our minds are wired to convince us to reject the natural state of things, which is peace and silence, so that we can move, and think, and survive, rather than be still as the earth we were born from and return to. Its very poetic, and it's part of the reason that I take Bhuddist philosophy quite seriously.

Excellent presentation! When a young girl and woman (long ago), due some reasons, I had anxiety and real panic attacks in group situations. My face flushed really red, I lost my train of thought, I was gone. I was afraid of dogs, too, I had been bitten. In all of these cases I approached very logically. I never run away. 1) What´s the worst that can happen? (Eg I reasoned, the dog bites me, I will go and get help, that´s all.) 2) I decided I don´t care what other people think. - Even as a mature woman now, I am amazed at my brain´s own inner capacity to help me deduct and solve my problems (which were really serious). And heal them. Today, I have no such fears. My own brain healed them.

Love this comment I deal with crippling anxiety and depression and sometimes I just want to end my life because I feel like I am so broken and unfixable. I have a lot of trauma from various sources growing up and because of that I deal with these mental disorders. I often get hyper fixated on a situation or stressor that it is all I can think about. For example I hated presentations in school and anytime a teacher mentioned that word my heart rate would increase dramatically. I would dread presenting every day until it happened and it was very frustrating. I have never liked speaking in front of large groups and in being in large crowds in general. I get over stimulated and usually would try to escape those situations or avoid them at all costs. I pretended to be sick on the day of the presentation so I could get out of it but that only delayed the inevitable. Right now I find most of my stress/anxiety is from financial struggles. It gets so bad sometimes that I give myself migraines and stop eating much at all. It also makes it very difficult for my family/loved ones because my moods can swing from 0 to 100 in a split second. It often leaves me feeling like a burden too those around me which leads to the depression. I just want it to go away.

I cannot believe all the years trying to cure my cptsd, last night after applying this, my life is completely changed😱😱 i did it the whole night continuously with each of my reflex because you have made me understood about the anxiety cycle😱😱😱 who would've thought?!?! You are really a godsend!!! I was able to sleep and woke up with reflexes still, but i kept comforting myself saying it's okay that i have a headache/panic attack ( because these are the things that amp up my anxiety, and i used to keep trying to fix these symptoms not realising it was amping up the anxiety cycle ) - that's why they say when you understand something only then it can be cured!! Wow... This is better than those quantum healing because i didn't have understanding of those, but you have helped me understand logically about the anxiety cycle... I couldn't stress enough because that horrible theme of flashbacks is now gone lol because as i understood what is going on with me (my brain - my own neurology), i realised those flashbacks are just images that came up with the anxiety - but since i know how to cure that anxiety now, those flashbacks have little to no power except for when it first arose, and everytime i am relieved from it, it's rewarding and is like an accomplishment!! And i finally for once am having control over my emotions aka my life!! I am someone who never wants to burden anyone so i just bottled up my feelings and walked out as a happily depressed person (hence the flashbacks and anxiety that kept accumulating in the brain), but just by applying it last night (i was crying again the whole night having a splitting headache), i just understood!! I love your approach to the problem that is realistic and practice so i don't need to be "spiritual" to get it or seek a guru to help me "uplift" without knowing how to do it on my part... Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!! It really was like common sense until i started actively applying to each and every of my thought feeling emotion and reflex, and today i am starting to live and really start achieving my goals... In such a short time!! I need no affirmation videos, i just needed to comfort what's preventing me to live bravely (yes i can't even approach my goals before because i was always anxious and guilt ridden due to my upbringing, i never felt i deserved to be better and lived better as i was the family scapegoat/caretaker). But this has changed everything. I apply this continuously and i no longer need to engage in endlessly fixing myself to feel better. I just comfort myself when i feel anxious or other negative emotions, and then i could keep studying, developing myself into a responsible adult, achieve my goals and approach my once distant dreams :) (still far from it but i know i can because i know what my bondage is now :)) Thank you :)) i am so glad i bumped into this video :)) thank god!!!!!!!!!!!

What do u tell urself now when u get a symptom?
@21andstuff60
@21andstuff60 3 года назад
@@saradevikam.508 when i have a flashback (memory or thoughts), i say to myself "it's okay" until "it's okay" becomes what i think about Remember to breathe when you say "it's okay", because it calms the body too. You can see this as befriending your thoughts, when they show up regardless of what it is, you can just accept them appearing and tell them it's okay :) you don't need to get into them nor entertain nor wrestle with them, just say "it's okay" until "it's okay" is all you think about ^^ When i have an emotional flashback (bodily emotionally overwhelmed, or physical symptoms like panic attack/fatigue/migraine) , i say to myself "I'm okay", or "it's okay I'm having a hard time, but so far i have survived 100% of such hard times, most of them were worse, so this is a piece of cake. It's okay :)" just anything factual and real that calms yourself and centers upon you being okay will be great to say~ Like if you once experienced being physically abused, and now you have a symptom, tell yourself you made it through the real deal, this remembrance/symptom in comparison is nothing but a piece of cake :) This technique is very important to me because my thoughts and feelings are stem from facts that i experienced in my reality for the longest time, and i need action from me to create a different life for me and my loved ones, so i need to stay bright and productive. When i was suffering a lot, couldn't even get out of bed, it was daunting, even self-care bodily didn't help me much because my brain was crippled. But now it's different because i am applying this to what cripples me most, and addressing what comes out from my brain with my brain power:) So, calming yourself is the most important for progressing into health. Some people use these soothing skills as defense mechanism or to enable denials, please don't fall into the trap. If something is actually wrong, it must be addressed. This is not about disregarding what's happening out there. This is about being a healthier version of you (a different reality than the messy one you have to deal with out there), so that you can create better and choose different options in life that is about being healthy and happy and productive. without your wellbeing first, it's impossible to create profound changes. So this is about being strong, clear, and capable of dealing with life issues from a healthy place :) Sometimes I'm worried people who are in abusive relationship or situation only use this to enable their misery so i have to put it here also. To be okay and to recover means being healthy enough to create a profound change in yourself/health, instead of to be stronger just to stay as a supply to problems and personal/relational miseries. I used to do that, i used to make myself "stronger" so i could still keep a relationship. But the truth is, the relationship was what weakened me. So i changed, and i got stronger just so i could keep my relationship with Me healthy. Meaning i had to say goodbye to people who didn't care about me even though i cared about them a lot. Practically, when i had to say no to an abusive relationship, to be healthy with me means i needed those healthy conditions to grant myself real safety first. So, my relationship with me is that i have to be healthy enough in my life that i can back myself up if someone threatens me using my factual weaknesses (financially physically mentally emotionally socially). My job is to strengthen those weaknesses so that i wouldn't be exploited by them anymore, nor be needy of any of it from someone else. This "it's okay" has solved the cognitive dissonance, gaslighting effects and other things being psychologically manipulated by others. So this soothing is the first step, the next step is to use the health and sanity you've gained to build a healthy relationship with yourself, with your unique life, to work on your goals, fitness, your "escape" from these bad situations. These all take energy and hard work! What i have found is, whatever i say to soothe me, must be regarding what i am experiencing, instead of externalising it to something outside my control. Let's say if you had a thought about a situation, maybe that situation isn't okay, maybe it's about someone else being abusive. All you need in this case, is to say to yourself that it's okay for you to think about such traumatic incident, it means you care and you don't want to create nor experience such things in your life. tell yourself that you're now okay, you can make changes, you're physically safe. You've made it through and you'll make it again. And Then, disengage with this person, even if not possible yet physically (same workplace/living place), you have to disengage with that person emotionally and mentally by using this "it's okay" technique inside your mind. It'd be hard at first but just be consistent, more consistent than anything else, then it will sink in. The most important thing about bringing yourself to feel okay is that you actually become okay by fact. And if you or someone you care about actually needs your help to change the situations, you will be able to do so :) never try to change someone else, change yourself and make it an eternal motto. If the thought of someone being abusive is something that's happening, and your body is feeling sick about it, you being weak in real time can do so little. So, when the thought comes up, it is being your best friend to tell you to create a positive change, so you must make sure you function at your optimum by being in the here and now, and then take positive actions to create wellbeing, or to end a bad situation from continuing. For instance, my friend told me that he has an addiction issue. I told him what actions he must take to stop it. I told him it's okay, i told him to take the steps to quit. But he kept himself in the addiction. I was frustrated. This time, I told myself it's okay, i tried all my best, and i have to stop interacting with him because he's using me as an enabler (if someone's addicted/has a problem and not taking active actions to change him/herself, all other things/people are nothing but enablers/supply). I used to make myself get healthy and keep helping him. But then i realised my approach was hopeless. Now i get healthy and then stopped being an enabler, i strive for my goals and my own happy life that is made of responsibility and trust with myself. If he doesn't want to be healthy, then we have to part ways. With an addict, there is no trust, no responsibility, no accountability. Just a chaos. And I wasn't able to see that until i got myself so sick and then healthier. You literally become addicted as a helper when you're with an addict. Same thing different form. So get out of there. So this is my lesson learned. Being healthy enough to create a healthy version of yourself, not so that you can bring anyone in (certainly not the addict), or chase someone else. It's not about any other person. it is to make yourself okay and healthy, and be the example for the addict or other people involved. All of these are personal work to do. Without this video, i was still in that toxic codependency cycle, because i was always trying harder to meet a wrong end. This is kinda in reverse because this all ends within me. And then i discovered my own tendencies just weren't working for me, and so i ended those patterns in myself also. It was very hard at first to stay in my own lane, because my brain was so used to those patterns. but i persisted because being the enabler was everything i wanted to get rid of. I don't want to be someone else's backup/something. I want to be my own self. so i kept going despite my habit of externalising my power. I hope you find this useful!! It's kind of repetitive but i figured that will help information sink in :) Many people are dealing with abusive situations nowadays so i incorporated that into this message just in case. :)
