-- Vagus Nerve Massage For Stress And Anxiety Relief --
A few months ago, I noticed something weird:
My ears were tight.
You probably don’t think of your ears as a place where you’d find muscle tension, but actually you have muscles all over your face and head.
And when your sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight branch) is activated, it can cause your neck and facial muscles to tense up (along with other muscles in your body).
Fortunately, there is an easy way to relax this muscle tension with a natural stress management technique designed to target vagus nerve massage points in your ear.
The vagus nerve is your main parasympathetic nerve responsible for the “rest and digest” functions in your body, as well as your ability to feel joy and connection to other people.
And it has a branch that just happens to extend into your ear where you can massage it for stress and anxiety relief.
Interestingly, when I tried this vagus nerve massage technique, not only did my ears relax but my TMJ resolved too!
I have always been a teeth grinder when I’m under stress. Dentists keep recommending those guard things to prevent teeth grinding -- but they really don’t stop you from clenching your jaw.
They just prevent tooth damage from the grinding. And many people grind right through the tooth guards in a matter of months!
It’s helpful to resolve the underlying cause of tooth grinding with natural stress management techniques. We can do this by shifting your nervous system into a parasympathetic or relaxation state.
And that’s exactly what this vagus nerve massage is designed to do -- help you relieve stress and anxiety by directly stimulating and activating the primary nerve of your parasympathetic nervous system.
Vagus nerve massage benefits don’t just include TMJ relief -- you may also experience headache relief, better neck mobility, deeper breathing, improved digestive health and a general sense of relaxation and well-being.
Watch the video to learn how to do this vagus nerve massage technique for yourself. Be sure and leave me a comment below to let me know how it went for you!

I am so grateful for you and this video 🙏❤ As a child, I used to "play" with my ears a lot, it was very soothing and I would do it after getting yelled at, as I cried or when I got scared of my dad - which was almost everyday. I look back at the little girl who was constantly scared and hurt, and realize how she did her best to soothe herself and her body - regardless of people calling her weird for doing it. Im crying writing this cause Im overwhelmed... and I am grateful to be able to heal and get better at the same time 😭🙏❤

Pushing airwax inside your patients ear canal while simultaneously putting them at risk for ear infections/penetrating their tympanic membrane seems like a great idea. For the record, the auricular vagus branch is sensory, NOT parasympathetic/sympathetic. Its main fibers are not even within reach as it descends ventral to transverse cervical processes. Sorry to burst your bubble, but this is pseudo medicine. Stick with approved EBM when caring for patients.

Lori... ANXIETY is HELL ON EARTH. I'm 70 yo, a retired man, who has Battled Anxiety Demons since I can remember (probably age 7 , starting with Nail Biting). I have Chronic Pain and Stiffness which has also Evolved and Manifested into Fibromyalgia. Suukie's massages help, but don't stop there... Look into Health Supplementation / Vitamins to help address the nervous system.

Asian Guy, is spot on about Anticipatory Anxiety. GAD which is the acronym for Generalized Anxiety Disorder, is all encompassing "disease". After many years of suffering from anxiety which started off "light" at age 7 or so. Nail biting, looking at my watch in the 3rd grade to see the time so we could leave (Catholic Elementary school with Nuns), and evolving slowly but Surely into GAD as a young adult. If you experience traumas ( I did, having a Mentally ill Mother who after years of anxiety / and depression [the depression was the worse edge of the "SWORD"], culminating in her suicide when I was 24 & married), the traumas are Etched into your Mind, lurking and waiting to emerge at just the right Moment ..... Anxiety and Panic Attacks. I could a Novel about it and trials and Tribulations of it... In fact, writing daily is a new therapy approach to this disease (watch Therapy in a Nutshell on YT (Dr. Emma), Terrific advice there. God Bless you all and may yiou find peace. PS: Health Supplementation is Vital to combat GAD !!

I have been suffering from anxiety and panic disorder, from being a police officer for 23 years. My anxiety can creep up on me and suddenly I’m in a full blown anxiety attack. Watching this video and the one prior to this, made me realize that I’m not crazy, when people say, “what do you have to be anxious about, you’re retired…” It seems that it’s a program running in the background and that’s what I need to work on. Doing these exercises helped me to calm down just now, while having an attack. I pledge to myself, that I will work on this, watch and do the exercises here, and see how it will eventually stop the anxiety completely. Thank you so much for what you do, to help people.

Susie, this is AMAZING! I just did this for the first time and feel like I need a nap! I've suffered from Recurrent Major Depression for 55 years and NOT ONE HEALTH PROFESSIONAL HAS EVER EXPLAINED THE IMPORTANCE OF THE VAGUS NERVE TO ME. I've been going through an extremely difficult time lately, despite being on my usual meds, taking an additional med to help sleep when needed, exercising and being retired yet NOTHING has helped to rid me of the extreme agitation in my neck, shoulders & head like these simple exercises. So THANK YOU so much for sharing this healing technique. I want to share it with everyone!!

I was absolutely beside myself with panic when I gave these exercises a go. I felt instantaneous relief. Enough to be able to sleep. Now I'm back here again the very next day, as I think I'll need these daily as I heal. Thank you so much for being one of the people in the world who helps others without asking anything in return. @AuricularMedicine
@AuricularMedicine 3 года назад
Yes, Sheri, you are right, an ear massage can yield excellent results. Beyond just the vagus nerve (which Sukie has introduced here), the ear receives the major nerve branches. As you may know from acupuncture, the ear is also considered a microsystem. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes the auricle as having the highest density of reflex points,[1] and fMRI research has shown that the brain responds the same when the body point or the respective ear point are stimulated.[2-3] In short, the ear offers a window to the brain - an access point for neuromodulation. Massage therapists who apply auricular methods, especially the clinical approaches found in Auricular Medicine, are able to identify, prioritize and treat blockages to healing by priming the nervous system for tissue release and much more.[4-5] We appreciate Sukie’s introduction to simple stimulation techniques - using one of the best tools for insight that every patient already brings you, their ears! It is important to use the right points (using a definitive reference such as the Precise Pocket Atlas by Dr. Beate Strittmatter, MD, referenced below) and distinguishing between active and inactive points. Researching a resolution, i found your video and I'm absolutely grateful to you. I first tried your video about moving your eyes and I fellt so calm doing it. Then i tried this one. Pushing the skin behind my ears made me burst into tears. My husband was watching and looked concerned. I told him I have no clue why I was crying. But it was so relieving to me. The yawning issue was so much less today and my heart rate has gone down. I'm going to keep trying this as I feel it has helped so much. Thank you!!

I watched this video while wearing a pulse oximeter and watching the bpm number as I did the exercises. I started with a bpm of 98-102. By the end of the video, bpm was down to a low of 64, but a pretty sustained 70-72. The most remarkable thing was the release of tension in the chest as I breathed as well as the relief from back pain between the shoulder-blades along the spine. I have to admit I watched the first video recommendation with the hand on head exercises as a complete skeptic. As quickly as those produced results, this was even quicker and would be easier to do in public if you're feeling anxious. 99% O2 level and 70bpm as I finish typing this.

@@nataliesmith9947 I still feel like there's a stigma around mental health, even with more people trying to recognize it. If they taught us these things, probably in middle and high school, we'd have more skills to handle the stresses of life and kids could learn about mental health. They probably won't be interested, but it could be taught again in high school. What really pisses me off is that none of my psychiatrists worked on these things with me as a kid. I'm 33 now, and have dealt with OCD since I was 5. They would ask me some questions, then talk about my SSRI. I don't even remember the questions, but it wasn't even beneficial talk therapy. I hated going there as a kid, so talk therapy probably wasn't the best anyway, unless the doc had a good personality... and none of them did until I was an adult lol. If they could've done more activities with me, like breathing or this kind of stuff, or games or something that are calming, it would have been sooo much better. Sorry I got off topic and rambled on! This stuff is super important though, especially if you have kids or work with kids, like yourself.

I was told possibly go on "heart meds" to reduce beats however I just didn't sit well with this. I was diagnosed having "anxiety" stored and trauma stored away for a long period of time in my life. Calming the vagus nerve seems to give me ability to be present with my condition as an observer from a distance...as if it's not happening to me. Great addition to my contemplative daily practices (yoga, meditation and resonance breathing). Assists alot with anxiety and relieves depression from chronic pain and trauma. Thanks, Suki! I'm determined to be my own "healer" without medication.

Yes! I'm hearing impaired as well, as well as I was suffering from CPTSD, and the accompanying mental health conditions.. 2 months ago is when I started practicing body mind and Spirit activities, including vagal nerve stimulation, and stretching the psoas muscle .. released decades worth of trauma in a pretty frightening experience, but since then I am literally changed at my core and no longer react from a place of fear...

@@amyrogers7047 Thank you for sharing your experience, I'm so happy it helped you! Would you mind sharing why the release of trauma was a frightening experience? I'm just beginning with vagus nerve excersises and would like to understand what to expect :)

@@krisnovo5375 hi message me, the reason it was frightening is because I didn't know what was going on and thought I was having a seizure.. I was doing a lot of dangerous work that I was not ready for yet I learned, that's why it was so sudden and violent.. it is not recommended, I was just stumbling around on RU-vid and Google. Yes, let's definitely share experiences! This is powerful stuff! ❤️

@@krisnovo5375 Hi Kris. I’m not sure I’ll be of use. Not a social media person. I just felt compelled to share because of not feeling like I belong.

If you watch babies, they often rub their ears with their fists when they are tired (the infant's equivalent of stress) and that, combined with a facial expressions says "I've had enough". We were born with the reflex to do this massage, but somehow have managed to forget it and have to have it taught back to us. Thank you for doing it so well!

I can not believe how much this has helped me relax the tension I have been feeling in my body. I was in a car accident and afterward the inside of my body felt like it was shaking although physically visually I was not. This has helped calm the internal jitters. I also have to say I loved seeing your cat walk through the video. So adorable. Thanks so much for sharing this incrediably helpful video.

I was in an accident too and it’s like my whole nervous system was thrown out out of wack. Meditation and deep breathing along with staying away from all negativity has helped. This technique will be incorporated to my routine
