This is by far the best video I have found demonstrating power injection. So the only time you need to cut the power from one string to the next is when you are using a different power supply and keep all the common wires connected from string to string.
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 5 лет назад
Thanks! The SAFEST way is to cut the positive when using two power supplies on the same line. Now some have said that as long as you have a load in between (X number of pixels between them), you don't have to cut, but I'm not an electrical engineer so I'm cutting and advising everyone else to too. Then again, some people use Ethernet cable for pixel wiring - it works, but NOT something I'd recommend. :)

Hi Jeff, been watching your videos for quite a while now and yes they are very informative and entertaining and this weekend is my set up time. Living in the Great White North of Canada I always shoot for the first weekend of December. The controllers I am using are From Ron's Holiday Lights and a Renard controller. The one big box you put under your Mega Tree is that controlling everything in your display or do you have more controllers? I have been thinking of changing over to the Falcon one day.
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 6 лет назад
Thanks! Yes, I have my F16V2 controlling the garage outline. I do plan on putting more lights on that side of the house so I have plenty of room for expansion there. The central box has an F16V3 with a DMX expansion board. I'm running one DMX output to a DMX receiver that covers the back fence and the wall washer. Technically, I don't need the expansion board for this case, but I'll use more as the display expands. So the central box covers most of the display, but I have others as needed. It really depends on the layout of your display as to whether or not you can do everything from one box or not. Also, it's really more of a personal preference thing. I know some folks running multiple Raspberry Pis in slave mode and they're all synced up via WiFi (so I'm assuming many Pi Hats). There's probably good arguments for either way. Less hardware vs redundancy. I am fortunate to have a spare controller this year so I'm less worried if I happen to do something stupid and fry one of them. :) Falcons are great boards. I'm a huge fan. If you are expanding or redesigning around one then try one out, but if you have everything you need and it's working fine, you could wait until you exceed your current hardware and put that money toward more lights or FM gear or Pis or wire or fabricating tools or whatever! It's always a struggle to decide what I want to add or upgrade. lol Good luck with the setUp & have fun!

Jeff, lovely videos. Great sense of humor too! Love seeing them! But more serious: What enclosures are you using to build your control boxes? I am somewhat new to the hobby (tinkered around with an LOR one year) and going to switch to pixels with a Falcon F44 differential board with 6 differential receivers (to begin with), but want to do a GOOD build on the enclosures (waterproof 3 pin/ RJ45 and 120v connectors, so in good theory, I never have to open a box). Just plug in the connectors and off to the races. Let me know and see you next video!
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 5 лет назад
Thanks! I ran the F48 this year and found the CG-1500s worked great. I've gone away from the centralized box and use a bunch of smaller ones throughout the display. I also used some plastic ammo boxes this year, but did get a little water inside one of them so probably sticking with CG-1500s from now on.
@andersadara9334

@@CanispaterChristmas Would you recommend (waterproof) panel mount connectors on the side of a box, so you can just plug cables in as needed? To me this seems a more watertight (and cleaner storage at the end of the season) then having a bunch of pig-tails hanging out?
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 5 лет назад
@@andersadara9334 Whatever works for you. I use pigtails myself. Also, not sure what climate you have, but you may also need airflow to keep things cool. I tend to think of the boxes as umbrellas vs submarines. :)

Hello Jeff! The C9 bulbs you put on the fence pixels, do they screw in? I've been chatting with Ray recently and that's the last thing I need to add for my order this year. Great video as always!
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 5 лет назад
Jason, The diffusers screw on, but the pixels are sealed. The diffusers come detached - you put them on yourself. FYI, they are not a super strong attachment, but they work.

Hey, thanks for the video, i enjoyed it. So with the tree you kinda tell us how the data wire travels top to top then to the bottom. A suggestion or request would be how its all wired for the rest of the yard showing how the power insertion happens in the yard. Thanks love the videos and I hope to see more of your show soon.
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 6 лет назад
Thanks again! Well, the only things I used power injection for are the big wreath, the wall washer and the tree. Nothing else needed more power. I run almost everything at 30% brightness which reduces the need for power injection and increases the number of pixels I can run without it. For example, the back fence is 175 pixels (30% brightness) and I'm not injecting power. The wall washer at 120 pixels IS injected because I am running it at 100% brightness. Or do you mean, you'd just like to see how everything is wired up? :)
@bluekey277
@bluekey277 6 лет назад
CanispaterChristmas Yeah thanks for the reply and it makes sense with that explanation. I have watched the power insertion videos and it makes sense but just seeing hows it all comes together might be good to see.

@bluekey277
@bluekey277 6 лет назад
AB 911 but does the distance of the extensions matter?
@abgarza911
@abgarza911 6 лет назад
alan page ...as far as power it doesn't matter how long the strip is but it depends on your controller universes, like i have the e1.31 16 outputs controller wich means 16 universe on the controller each channel (universe) handles 512 pixesl so i you are running a strip with less than 512 pixels you can run that in 1 channel (universe) but if there more than 512 you use the next channel (universe) but as far as power you dont have to worry with my controller i can run 8192 pixels with 1 power supply....

+ABTek1 well, i used the regular Ethernet plugs. They do have the little tabs that click in, but the one I was having trouble with was missing so it kept slipping out. Only took me a couple of times to figure that out. LOL It was a test cable anyway so I'll put a new connector on it. I'll check out the locking plugs tho. Thanks!

I'm considering Boscoyo strips for vertical lines at corners of my house. I'm concerned about them flapping in the wind we get here on the great plains. Has the flapping bothered you at all? Your window setups are a bit heavier than just one single vertical strip would be, but I can still see them moving a bit in your video.
@CanispaterChristmas

How are you adding additional power supplies that are not supplying the main controller? I did this and ran into what I think is a ground sync or some other issue where I loose control of the strips.
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 4 года назад
Make sure the grounds are tied together. That should keep them from flickering. I never connect the positives from two different supplies together so they should feed different strings. Another option is to just use data and ground from the controller and supply the positive and ground from another power supply. This is an older video. Now I use Differential Receivers which have their own power and provide 4 pixel ports. It really depends on what you have to work with.

Can you share your exact plans and specs for the mega tree and controller box?
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 6 лет назад
MegaTree is 12 strings of 100 folded over at 50 to look like 24 strings. It's about 13-15ft tall (I just crank it up until the strings straighten out, but not so tight as to pull them off the bottom ring). The bottom ring is ~8ft in diameter (3x3/4" electrical PVC conduit trimmed down to size). The pole is an ASAP pole modeled after Walter's video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P8XRpqi3dvU.html). The box is a 27-gal storage tote from Home Depot (www.homedepot.com/p/HDX-27-Gal-Storage-Tote-in-Black-5-Pack-HDX27GONLINE-5/206126311). 1/2" MDF for the bottom that I mount the electronics to. Details and links to most of the stuff is in the description of this video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CsnVs942alI.html). The cages for the power supplies were just cut &drilled pieces of 90-degree aluminum stock I got from Home Depot. Does that help?

Hi Jeff. Is there anyway you could have the box using a wifi connection to the home internet rather than run a Ethernet cable from the router to the box. My router is under the stairs and no easy way to get it outside tidy. I’m finding it hard to find answers and totally new to this but aim to start leaping LED arches for next Xmas in the U.K. there’s not many using pixels etc it’s still very much shop brought stuff. Many thanks.

You can put the Pi outside, in fact you can run a Pi for each controller in remote mode. Only sync pulses go over WiFi, but the show is run from each Pi. So one master and the rest remotes.

How big is your big wreath and can you share any details about it?
@CanispaterChristmas
@CanispaterChristmas 6 лет назад
Sure! It's a 4x4ft piece of 3/16" (I believe) acrylic I got from a local plastics supplier (a tad expensive). 4 rings of 72 pixels per ring. Had a friend draw up a template for the holes in Adobe Illustrator and had that printed at a local large-format print shop. Drilled small 1/8" holes through the template to make sure the holes were in the right place then drilled them out to ~1/2" with a stepper bit - that seems to do better on plastic where a 1/2" bit will probably break it. 288 pixels total which will require power injection. I'm running power at the beginning, middle and end. May be a little overkill and I can't get 100% brightness because the power supply is about 30ft away. I run it at 30% anyway so I'm not worried about fixing that.
