I had a lot of this footage sitting around since May, it felt only right do a "sounds only" video featuring these two RGS beauties.

Talking about a wild goose chase. On another note it’s really cool seeing the valve gear do the dance as the thing runs.

Something I've never considered before is the difference in utility for a museum with being able to just go in a circle all day. Over at IRM, their main does actually go quite a distance (and supposedly, they own a ROW that goes substantially further. They just have yet to lay down tracks for), but at the end of the day, you do have to stop and go backward wich may cut down on your immersion.
@tobyradabaugh5033

They haven’t built the rest of the track due to a creek would be expensive to build a bridge over the creek

Two questions: do the locomotives and other rolling stock at the museum experience unusual wear patterns due to being run always in a circle? And do steam engines need anything like an "Italian tune-up", or do they run happily at low loads and speeds consistently without accumulating fouling anywhere? I'd guess not due to being external vice internal combustion.
@Hyce777
@Hyce777 2 года назад
They do get wheel wear in patterns from the circle, and we do try to change directions we run to mitigate that the best we can. We have a 3.5% grade. Either way, they get cleaned out. Lol

It doesn't fit on the rails so they put it on display
@PowerTrain611
@PowerTrain611 2 года назад
No, it does not "work". Almost every steam engine you will find on static display needs at least some work before it would be in working order. They're not like cars that sit around for a while, where you can see if the engine will crank and fire. The boiler and firebox hold a wicked amount of pressure. Any clogs, leaks, cracks or any damage can lead to a catastrophic failire that would literally make the thing blow up in your face in a way you will NOT survive if you're within 300 yards of the thing. You need to perform lots of tests and checks and perform repairs before you light a fire if you don't want to die.

i really wonder how your inspection regime works compared to the dutch standard, i know ours is super extreme but i dont really hear much of any big accidents happening in the US with historical trains, so clearly it must be pretty decent. the only dutch group i know halfway decent is the southern ZLSM line, one of the most historical routes in the west eu (imo) and a really damn cool place, all of the old school stuff from the 50's and before is still there, i really miss the thundering sounds of the trains there climbing the hill up to simpelveld, such and incredible sound to hear a steam train really go all out, even more so with the big ones. seems you only have a circle track of some kind, we dont have those in the netherlands as far as i know, all of them are on old public tracks from A to B back to A though i will say a nice 2 hour journey on a steam train is much nicer then a short track (imo) if you ever get the chance to come to the EU, check out the ZLSM they (mostly) have old swedish war reserve stock that was sold of in the 90's (crazy to keep steam trains till the 90's but whatever) they also have one 53 serie german war train. but the 1040 has to be the most steampunk train ive personally ever seen anywhere. its such a cool train (ZLSM 1040 on youtube if ya wana see a vid) its so intresting how american all these trains are, makes sence but even so the difference is huge!

Cheers for the comment! I'm not familiar with what the Dutch do, but our inspections are pretty well regulated and yield good results from what I've seen.
