Rhinestone, Oscar & Stop or My Mom Will Shoot: Are Stallone’s Comedies All Bad?

In 1988, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s career got a big boost with the release of his first comedy, Twins. An unexpected smash hit, it opened up his career to a whole new audience, and for a while, he was able to alternate comedies with action movies, resulting in a large cross-over audience that made a lot of his films megahits. Sylvester Stallone likely wanted to try the same thing himself, with him signing on to do two back-to-back comedies in 1991 and 1992, John Landis’ Oscar and Stop or My Mom Will Shoot. Both films were flops (although Oscar is quite good), and Sly would often dismiss his foray into comedy in the years following.
In this episode of Sylvester Stallone Revisited, we dive into this perhaps ill-advised but understandable foray and examine a previous brush with comedy, 1984’s Rhinestone. That movie cast Sly as a New York taxi driver who’s turned into a country singer by none other than Dolly Parton. Like Sly’s other comedies, it was a flop, and it’s arguably the hardest Stallone movie to find in his filmography. In this episode, we examine why he made each movie, but we also dig into whether any of the movies have a saving grace, with two of them (Rhinestone and Oscar) not quite as bad as their reputations suggest.
This episode of Sylvester Stallone Revisited is written and narrated by Chris Bumbray, and edited by Bill Mazzola. Let us know in the comments what you think of Sly’s comedies.

Oscar will always hold a special place in my heart because of my mother. She and my sisters loved Oscar and would quote it all the time. I’d hear “Fannucci’s” and “The one that’s not Lisa” all the time. They even got me into it. Sadly, my mother passed away in May. Seeing Oscar is difficult for me because on the one hand it reminds me she’s gone, on the other I can still hear her laughing when I see clips.

There is an arc for action stars. They start off as villains, then heroes, then comedies and kids movies. Arnie and Stallone did it so have more contemporary stars did it like Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson. I don't think it works for them most of the time. I don't think Stallone has good comedic chops but I have to say I really like Oscar. I think he had a good supporting cast to lift the whole thing up.

Yeah, this was a weird period for Stallone, & I actually remember seeing the trailers for both Oscar & Stop, or my mom will shoot, shortly before their releases. Though I have yet to watch either of them till this day, so I'll reserve my judgement, until I can finally view both. I've never even heard of Rhinestone before, but would be willing to check it out. Anyways, thanks for covering these seldom discussed movies. There seem to be alot of underrated gems from the early '90s, that are literally never talked about anymore. You guys should make some videos over some of them. I know that nobody ever discusses Curly Sue, or Newsies, or Little Man Tate, which was my late mother's fave movie. There are many others too, that i can't think of at the moment. Folks!, is also another one.

Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot! is hilarious! I watched it frequently as a 10-year-old when it first got released on home video, and still have a fondness for it as an adult 30 years later. I grew up watching Stallone’s action films too, so I know that this was a departure to a degree (he is still a tough guy in the movie). I haven’t read the original script to see what might have been if Estelle Getty hadn’t been cast as the mother (or if she had played closer to her Sophia Petrillo character on The Golden Girls). But I think the script was incredibly funny, the direction was smarter than it’s given credit for, and I loved the chemistry of Stallone and Getty as mother and son. I think people are too jaded as they forget this is just a movie. It’s not real life. Sit back and laugh at the preposterousness of what’s going on onscreen. Anyway, that’s my two cents.

He was told this for hours. He also snuck in the 2 children who weren't actors because he didn't want to pay for children or follow the rules for children because it would have meant they could not be shooting in the middle of the night.
