How Farms Work is a RU-vid channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. Our videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and GMO crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.
Be sure to subscribe for new videos every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!

Keeping up with the fence lines are next to impossible...looks like RHINO came to the rescue. I believe this addition, while not used daily, will make property line and pasture maintenance a breeze. Excellent addition!

Wow..you do amazing work. As a RhinoAG Dealer that is the best promotional/testimonial demonstration for the MDB130. They need to send you the full line-up of equipment to test and video! That will keep you busy for a few weeks. Thanks for the time you took to help me as a dealer show my customers what the benefits of adding a MDB130 to their fleet. I think a Great Video would be a Tag Team of the 4155 & MDB130 reclaiming your ground. We are in severe drought and every acre of pasture & hay is going to matter this year and if they would have just cleaned the brush back a little how much farther their fields could have feed their livestock. Send me some of green grass!!!

Ryan, I think there are few things that give you such INSTANT gratification as much as seeing fields and pastures reclaimed from brush and brambles. The mower is great.
@MatthewHoag77
@MatthewHoag77 6 лет назад
Who knows? Maybe one day the pastures will be totally brush-free. I know it's a stretch, but where there's a will (and enough time and money) there's a way.

The joy of cutting up weeds and briars with a brush cutter cannot be captured in words or video. I only have a subcompact with a 4 foot mower but it is so nice to slash up the crap.

It’s great to see farmers on the other side of our planet, thinking the same way as i am. Here in Sweden farmers, often don’t bother to do this procedure.. They do not seem to understand that for example, nettles and cocklebur spread their seeds in to the fields and next time their ploughing the fields, they get a LOT of problem with this type of weed! Especially the ecological farmers... great vids btw

I saw that you had this hooked up to the 7600 for the Farm Day but had to dismount it so more people could get tractor rides out in the fields. This is the job it was made to do. Thanks for the demonstration!

The biggest test for those mowers is after a couple decades. They are all meant to last a couple years but when you have one that is 50 years old from woods and is still going strong. Im sure rino is a trusty brand but personally always liked the woods mowers.

Flush cut the stumps or stump grinder, your biggest problem would be solved. However, just mowing down "small trees" and brush, in a few yrs time, you'll forget about where those particular "stubs" are but, promise you, you're tractor tires will still find them. Great video, cheers :)

Awesome rig, Ryan!! That thing powers through that brush like a beast!!! I own an old Servis/Rhino CY-72 6-foot brush hog and it's an absolute beast. I have put it through some tough conditions and it can withstand the brush, bramble, and heavy grass I give it. the Ford 420 I have it hooked to is a really nice brush hogging tractor. It seems to have enough power to run the huge brush hog. Good luck with the farm this year!!

Perhaps the 4020 on the 4155 then? I was thinking the same thing as Remco. Collaboration is usually a good thing, right?
@remcoscholtmeijer3044
@remcoscholtmeijer3044 6 лет назад
Maybe the 4020 us better for the side mower because I think that mower needs less horsepower than the 4155 does. But isn't there something out there for the 4640 so you can pull the 4155 with the 46?
@jwhitley101whitleyfarms9
@jwhitley101whitleyfarms9 6 лет назад
John Haas 4020 can pull that little mower yes it might need some weight in the tires if they are not already filled but I have seen those mowers on smaller size tractors without to many issues
@remcoscholtmeijer3044
@remcoscholtmeijer3044 6 лет назад
That was what I was thinking. That 4020 can pull that mower pretty well I figure don't think it needs to much extra weight
@zfilmmaker
@zfilmmaker 6 лет назад
In the future, your much better off cutting down the locust and painting the stump with something like Tordon. You're not doing anything by mowing it down except to send its rhizome roots in every direction. Have you ever pulled one by the root? The roots literally go 100 feet in every direction. That's how locust groves start, by mowing them down and causing them to expand. FYI.

@lukestrawwalker

That's a nice rig and I'm sure if you have enough work to justify the cost of it... I'm sure that thing ain't cheap. Does it have hydraulic deck tilt so that you can tilt the deck more vertical to buzz back tree limbs and stuff in/near fences or trees? That would really make it a lot handier. My brother works for the county drainage district running slope mowers (with a 4 foot "bonnet" (shredder deck) like this one, but on a long telescoping boom that can reach over fences and creeks to mow the banks, and can tilt up to knock down limbs and brush growing out over the rights-of-way). Really handy... Thing is with brush, basically if you want to KILL it (for good) you gotta follow up with some sort of herbicide... buzzing the stuff off down to the ground just gets rid of the top growth, and most of the time it comes right back in a year... To each his own but when I get rid of brush, I want it GONE FOR GOOD... (well, kill the roots and all so any that comes back is having to come from seed, so it's much easier to kill and keep clean). Why I love that Remedy/diesel fuel basal bark treatment so much... just spray the bottom foot or so of the trunks or stems of trees and brush and it'll kill it roots and all within a few months. If the brush is too thick or dense to spray the bases of the brush, you *can* just "hose it down" with the sprayer and it will kill it out too... Let the stuff die and dry down and you can easily push it out with a skid steer or loader tractor, push it up into burn piles, and then you've got good completely clean ground ready for grass to get established to be available for your livestock... Later! OL J R :)

Rhino just sold another 5 units. Hell of a tool and you worked like you stole it..hard. It sure is beautiful back home. Thank you for farmday and in 2020 sell food. Your farmers. Take preorders and schedule with finished beef, chickens, produce and get your cousin or a permaculture partner mob grazing the pastures. They will double production and let the animals do the heavy lifting. Rent a cold box truck for order pickup and sales at Farmday. Throw out the middlemen except the butcher and those asshat regulations for big ag to swallow little ag. Swedish homestead, Richard Perkins, Gregg Judy. Build the brand and sell direct to loyal subscribers. Safe food is a premium. I hope you can cook and sell your own prepared foods. Good way to build pastures, take pre orders and 50% down on family's buying a head of beef ect. Charge a premium and fill every car up with Hempanol in 2020. Give the fuel away with $100.00 platinum ticket to farmday. Put a zipline support and rigging on the platform on the new bin. Perfect kid and adult ride paying for the safe stairs vs ladder like the last great choice. It's going to double in 2020. Hell of a job and 400k subscribers will be 1 million by then. Lucas mills would love the exposure cutting 1000 board ft an hour at the event making lumber for the post and beam cattle, hay hemp building during farm day raising.
