Rhodes MK8 Fast Jam by Dan Goldman 

Not sure many keyboard freaks would agree with your assessment that a Rhodes is "high maintenance". Personally I think that's one of their finest qualities is the low maintenance. Wurlis, however, are a whole other animal.

I was a keyboard technician for 36 years after my career as a pianist. I rebuilt many Rhodes. Most were in horrible condition. Probably because their owners did not learn how to keep them up to working condition. As I said, gigging four and five nights a week, and pounding on them, I was constantly working on mine. But then my whole career as a keyboard tech was only possible because every 88 note weighted action instrument broke often. The actions just did not hold up to the pounding a pianist gives them. And the first generations of new weighted actions all had weakness that the manufacturers had to eventually fix.

In the 1970s owned 5 stage mk1 and 2s and giged 5 to 7 nights a week. Lots of clubs back and I was in 7 to 9 piece showbands. Case built like a tank, inside like well forgetaboutit. Three or 4 tnes a week. Replace them on a break. No regulating or voicing. Mine all sounded like s**t. Real muddy. Didn't bother getting a decent amp. With bands that size and big crowds people didn't seem to care and I was always broke anyway. When my wife sometimes came she'd tell me couldn't tell me from the guitarist on the other side of the stage. I have been teaching out of my studio since the 80's full time. Last gig I did was in 84. I'm thinking of that part of the business up. Bill

I think the competition is still on. I'm lazy and still haven't written a track. I think the spoken vocal rap thingy in the video isn't my bag. I'd wa t to chop it but you can't do that as it wouldn't work with the video.

The main outputs are on the left of the MK8. The right side is USB, MIDI and expression pedals.

It is actually very fairly priced if you think about it. The people at Rhodes make up a small operation of dedicated craftspeople & engineers working hard to create this modern mk8 and bring it to the world without large scale factories and cheap OEM parts. Like all businesses, they have overheads and must provide livelihoods for everyone involved. Paying for one of these beauties helps them to keep making them and developing the brand.

Cheaper options don't invalidate the existence of higher end products. It's like a Nissan vs a Lamborghini both get you from point A to B, but people are willing to pay a premium for quality craftsmanship and a luxury experience. Financially this is out of reach for a majority of the market especially they way the global economy is looking, however their stated goal was to create the best version of the Rhodes not the most accessible. That's why things like Keyscape and stage pianos exist.

This is hilarious. One of the most beautiful sounding instruments of all time and used ALL THE FUCKING time (real or emulation) in modern music, jazz, worship music, neo soul…I could go on 😂
