Hey, thanks so much for watching my video! 😙 Before you comment, or reply to someone, please make sure that your information is verifiable, share links to articles, or studies, or explain in detail why you think what you think. Experience is awesome, give us a lot of details about your experience! But please don't pass on advice you hear from other people who did not explain why they say what they say. Don't present as facts things you are unsure of or things you remember once hearing about, but you can't remember the cotext of. We want to work against spreading false information, so that we all have a much safer and happier orchid experience! Thanks so much! 💖

When you say that the column looks like a fly i remember. We call the Rhynchostylis retusa "Kopou phul" in Assamese. Kopou means dove and phul means flower in my language. The rhyn retusa is our state flower. And indeed the flower 's column looks a head of a dove. The rhyn retusa is well attached to our culture, at "bihu " festival, in april, every home has its blooms dangling from trees and traditionally since ages ourwomen have been using it as a hair ornament while dancing. Enjoy! I will surely get the gigantea.

Here in Assam ,we can find this orchid in almost all village houses. They grow huge over here. Blooms almost 20/25 spikes average in my house and can grow over 1/3 meter . However they really grow very slow.

Not exactly this. We have retusa. The leaves are a bit smaller and the blooms are smaller too.

I got the same variety and also the alba variety last August. They are a bit younger than yours. When you said that their growth is excruciatingly slow, you are right! I finally see a hint of a new leaf on one of mine after 6 months. I hope mine looks as lovely as yours when they bloom! Thank you for a wonderful video!

I actually have that exact variety of Rhynchostylis! It's a first bloomer for me as well, and I also disliked the fragrance at first; it smelled something like citrus, soap, and dust. Over time the dust turned into a more spicey fragrance, so now I have this oddball palette of citrus, spice, and soap! It is somewhat similar to the Phalaenopsis violacea scent, but soapier and citrus-y-er. I also found that the intensity of the fragrance was sorely overstated, even with good amounts of light and care. Perhaps her next blooming will be a bit more powerful. I love Rhynchostylis and any hybrid that calls it an ancestor, they're about the only Vandaceous orchids I actually like (excepting Aerides, of course. I am a sucker for all things fragrant!)

I love these petals. In the middle of the pedals, looks like a tiger where you could see the ears to eye the nose and the mouth. It's picture perfect. Also I just love the way you put everything into very detail for this orchid.

I have one these and I LOVE it! It’s one of my favorites, too. Regarding the fragrance, I think it is wonderful! I love the perfume-like smell. Many orchids have a floral smell, a lemony or citrus smell, sweet food smells like vanilla, chocolate, coconut, etc. but this one is actually like a perfume and I happen to love it! Thanks for another great video! Best Regards from Florida! 🍊🍊🍊

I have one a little taller than yours, I absolutely love it. I got it last year with a flower spike. This year, it has rewarded me with two spikes all opened now. I’m not crazy about its fragrance. Since it’s outside under a tree, it doesn’t bother me at all. I’m thinking about getting other varieties...very easy to grow.

This species hit the garden centers here in Denmark last year. It seemed every Danish hobby grower bought one and went on Facebook, saying how wonderful the fragrance was. And having smelled it in the garden centers, I have to agree with Danny. The fragrance is not exactly pleasant. It's acidic, but not what I would call citrusy. It's not the disgusting sour clothes smell of Bulbophyllum medusae either (thankfully). Very hard the describe, except acidic and sharp.

Hi Danni! (Hope I spelled that correctly) My aunt loves this video. -I was wondering, maybe sometime you could do a video on Cattleya alliance orchids that Love hot weather? Late Spring through Fall in Texas is brutally hot. I have this Cattleya percivaliana that I don't particularly enjoy but it grows so well outside during our hot season that I've kept it. Well that and just because it's the only orchid I've been able to bloom.

Hi Danny!!! Is it OK if I have my orchids in my bedroom or kitchen? its very its the most warm and where there is more light due to winter time, I live in Hamburg so its have been cold!
@lenahygiena

Hi Stefany, depends on the environment your particular orchids require and the spot you put them in. I have grocery store phals, a dendrobium nobilee and a miltoniopsis herralexandre in my bedroom and they all thrive, also had a Nelly Isler for a while. Observe the orchids to see how they react to the environment. In the kitchen, just put them out of harm's way (steam, heat, being knocked over)

I have Rhynchostylis Spot Cartoon fully bloomed with multiple spikes and heavily scented fragrance 24/7 . However I'm sick and tired of watering them as the root gets dried very quick and night temperatures at my place drops between 14° to 11°C. I'm really confused because this orchid demands too much care🤔

Hi Danny. I grow most of my orchids under plant lights especially in the winter. They're doing great! Would vandas do well under the lights? My weather here is unpredictable so even in warmer temps it would be subjected to high wind, rain, high humidity and temps in the high 90s to over 100s. I've never done well with Vandas but I love them. I've tried bare rooted, baskets, pots, bark and lava rock. Out of the 7 I've bought, I've killed everyone of them! They were all very mature and expensive. IDK how else I can keep and grow them.

Great timing on this for me. Just picked one up a few weeks ago at the Tamiami show. The growers here (south Florida) are selling them with the roots wrapped in moss supposedly to push blooming prior to the shows. I can’t imagine keeping them in it full time. Unrelated question... what are your thoughts on wet / dry cycles? I’ve heard that more cycles relates to faster / increased growth.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 5 лет назад
Good question :) I did nor read anything conclusive on the matter, just anecdotal and people talking. So my theory is that, if indeed it promotes growth, it just has to do with what we talked about a few days ago. In certain setups drying out removes the water from the air pockets, provides oxygen and facilitates water and nutrient uptake. Without oxygen roots have issues with that www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/01904160009382082 so more water and nutrients, more growth :) bare root vandas function better when they are exposed to a lot of oxygen too so there we go. I believe it's just a side effect, but in certain setups it doesn't matter, as we can see in my collection 😁

@@MissOrchidGirl well I mean the roots dry up and turn silvery white within 15 minutes no matter how long I soak it or mist it so I would literally have to water it like 20 times a day if I did it everytime it got dry. This is what I mean watering vandas is frickin confusing I don't want to overwater because roots can rot but I also don't want to not give it enough water.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl Год назад
Oooh so it's bare rooted not potted, should have mentioned :) ok then soak in water for at least 15 minutes at least once a day, twice may be better if your environment is very warm 😊 yeah keeping bare rooted Vandas is a drag 🤣
