With Grammy Awards already under his belt already, Rahki is one of Top Dawg Entertainment's most trusted producers. The Minneapolis-born producer was the man behind "i," one of K-Dot's biggest singles, for which he sampled a '70s Isley Brother's track, "That Lady." Besides making beats for other members of TDE such as Ab-Soul, Rahki has produced for Eminem, 50 Cent, Travis $cott and more.
Rahki's ear for samples is so good, MASS APPEAL had to put him to the test in our latest episode of Rhythm Roulette. We met up with Rahki at Ameoba Music in L.A. where he tied on the blindfold and picked three records from the shop's clearance section. His picks were random as hell, including a chorus recording, orchestral music, and one album whose cover gave him "Illuminati type of vibes."
It seems those left-field selections posed just a small challenge for the talented beat-maker. What he came out with in the end is a banger. Check out Rahki at work in our latest Rhythm Roulette video above.

Yea well but the samples alone werent making the beat, it were his great instrument+dum abilitys
@Shakshuka69
@Shakshuka69 7 лет назад
Just cause he made it from nothing doesn't make it good lol. The sample needs to be melodic. Playing it into a simple melody in keyboard mode sounds like trash 99.9% of the time. Watch Kev Brown make beats if you wanna see what I mean. I'm starting to they think they don't have him on here to avoid making everyone else look bad

@TheBariNoZ
@TheBariNoZ 7 лет назад
well at least he didn't went straight to the soul section. but lets be clear, rythmroulette's emphasis (to me) is on the blind fold. and kev brown don't use (i dont think?) live instrument so.. apple & oranges. lets not knock one technique when we know fully well we've only seen a quarter of his creative process. and to be honest, rap is more rhythm than melody.... but then again, to each his own, music is a cosmos, it would be wrong to say one element is more important than another. a song, a story.

I find it very funny that sooo many so called hip hop heads in these comment sections dissing producers for using the soul section. You all do understand that hip hop literally started that way. looping soul, jazz, funk records. literally.
@MyNameIsActuallyZee
@MyNameIsActuallyZee 7 лет назад
seventyninestudios It's not that soul/jazz/funk samples are bad it's that they're the most conventional samples and somewhat boring. No matter what type of record you pick out of the section you'll find something to sample. Doesn't make it as much of a challenge.
@seventyninestudios

@ichris2011
@ichris2011 7 лет назад
It started there but we want to see it progress beyond its roots now. Soul samples are crazy if you can flip them into something we would never guess came from a soul record. Problem is most people just follow the same soul break formula from almost 30 years ago and that shit gets boring especially when you see big name producers up here doing that shit.
