SOHBAT صحبت . meaning: companionship, consorting, side-by-side-ness. IMO this is the only way to “learn” raga music, which is all about “guided play” or “improvising persuasively” (paradox after paradox!) 😭😭😭 so when I am sitting with maestra #FaridaKhanum in #Lahore I try to “absorb-and-emit” what I am hearing (instead of trying to “unpack it” or “break it down”). Please convey my respect to this Goddess of Sur. I had the opportunity to sit across from her and listen to her sing without any instruments in a room. I had the recording on my phone. I would listen to that recording whenever I felt disturbed or hassled. It would immediately transport me to a calmer place. Incidentally, she told me none of her children has learned singing from her. So great to see you, Ali Sethi, learning from this jewel of South Asia and classical gayaki.

Ali Sethi you are truly gifted and have the greatest lengend Fareeda khannum to teach you. I had the honour of sitting on the place. She let me come in at a late hour with out a appoint just because I sent her a message I was Yusuf Sahib sister from Mumbai India. She sang a few gazals which are stamped in my memory. when i heard Farida jee's 'aaa jaa', i could feel my own throat sinking!!! Ali couldn't go that deep, no matter how many times he tried. Legends are legends for a reason! Goosebumps! Ali, you too will be one!

Old news is - Ali and Mahotarma Farida khanum jugalabandi-ing. A word of applause and then some more applause to thr Tabla Player as well. Ali - This was so so so so good! Old age is a curse. Even the best of best lose to it. Lata ji, Asha ji, Alka Yagnik, Sadhna and so many more. Farida ji's voice has aged. It has become cracky. She also struggles with her breath BUT she still remains sureeli... Hats off.
