What's the rule of thumb to know the length of rope you need per the item you're wrapping this particular design on? Wondering if I could alter it slightly to wrap a fender, and how to gauge the rope needed.
There is no reliable way of calculating that, too many variables. What I do is guestimate the length, add little to have enough. Measure the rope, tie my work and measure how much is left. Then I know for the next one.

It’s called a palm or a sailor‘s palm. You can make your own, if you’re handy. Have a look on the Internet and see if you can find a tutorial. Chances are local sailors, especially older men, may have one for you to examine. You can make one using that as a guide. If not, comment back and I’ll see about sending you some pictures and English-language instructions. I can try to do them in Spanish, but I am no Spanish speaker, so my best recommendation is that you ask me for a Spanish copy only as a last resort, and with the expectation that you will correct all my mistakes so that we have a good copy in Spanish. Lol.
Amazing!!!!! Don’t know, but I would like to attempt making one. What is that awl type tool? I have never seen one like that. Is it for fishing net making? The second needle is not familiar either. How does the rope stay stuck inside the needle? What is this tool called? Unique tools not seen in the USA.
Robby I would like to try this craft. I am in USA. I never heard of those tools. And I have done hundreds of differ NT kinds of crafts, including Ild traditions. But no netting or rope work. So I will try to find these tools online somewhere.
@@occipitalneuralgia2339 they are easy to find in the usa online. Europe is different: only in the UK. Google those toolnames and you'll find them easily.
@@occipitalneuralgia2339 start with a normal marlin spike. With that you can make a lot of decorative knots. But you can use a wooden tapered spike for that as well. For stuff with thicker rope, go straight to a swedish hollow fid. This will double as a spike. For smaller diameter ropes you could also just buy a splicing kit. These can also be used as a spike.

I’d sure like to know who that is, please. :) Tyvk 4 this video; I’ve never seen a vessel or carrier knotted in quite this way before; It was also nice to see somebody use a palm. A few years ago, I used a bit of shoe (sole) leather, and a bit of a bull moose rawhide from the last hunting season, to make one, as they’re just did not seem to be one anywhere to be found to fit a small woman’s hand. An old fisherman friend lent me his own giant-sized one to use as a pattern. The thimble portion was made from a copper penny that was hand-dimpled, and mounted on a carved wine cork. Putting together a pair of shoes just isn’t possible without one, at least not without a better skill set than my own. It turned out surprisingly well; my sister’s hands are exactly the same size and shape as my own, & she spends a whole lot more time than I do creating shoes and other leather goods, when she’s not teaching classes, renovating heritage houses, or in clinic. It just seemed right to emboss her initials and the date into it, and make a gift of it. A second, different one, is pretty much ready to be assembled. I wonder what else is on your channel…
