Ribs out? You're breathing wrong.

I see so many people with strained upper ribs, and the vast majority have dysfunctional breathing patterns. Excessive use of the accessory breathing muscles is likely staining the rib joints.
Also, it's incredibly common for patients to mistake an elevated rib with a knot in their muscle. So if you think you have a knot that just won't go away, no matter how much massage you get and stretching you do,, you may need to be adjusted.
As much as I like being busy in practice, the solution to this problem is not regular adjustments. Address the CAUSE of the problem!

Joaquin Suico KAPOW Yes, breathing wrong for so long causes your ribs to stay flare out. You need to correct your breathing and do proper exercises to fix those muscles that will eventually reposition your ribs back to where they belong. Go to this website I found it really helpful, posturedirect.com/flared-ribs/ or Search up how to fix a flared ribs for more. I’ve personally been working on this for a couple months and have seen a change and felt it too. I currently have one side that’s still a bit flared, but it’s on it’s way down.

Hah, I never thought I'd find someone with the same condition! My ribs have always stuck out very noticeably and have quite a pronounced back arch though I have no other skeletal issues, breath correctly, and have reasonable core strength. I don't know how bad it is for us, and have found it hard to find info on the matter (like this vid as I breath using my diaphragm) but I wouldn't worry about how it makes you look. I am not trying to trivialise your anxiety but personally, I quite like the look of my ribs, I guess as with anything like this: If you can't change it, own it. That being said I want to investigate whether it can do me harm hence me being here. If I found that my ribs will cause me future problems and I could stop them being flared, I'd genuinely be sad for the loss, they've become part of my body image. Good luck, I hope you learn to enjoy your body, unique as it is.

@TheGoodfella2012

Wrong. Wrong. Belly breathing is a modern myth. Yes people who are EXCLUSIVELY chest breathers, need to take a stepping stone into focussing on their belly. HOWEVER it is the RIB CAGE that needs to be expanding forward, sideways and backwards when taking a full breath. In doing so the sternum will rise and so will the belly - but the belly will expand only very slightly. Look up Dana Santas videos where she talks about RIB CAGE breathing. And more importantly look up the video of BKS Iyengar properly chastising belly breathing. In all of the ancient Yoga sutras nowhere is belly breathing mentioned. There is a video of BKS Iyengar on RU-vid demonstrating breathing where he takes an in-breath for 90 seconds - and if you pay attention to his torso when he does so, you will see that the belly isn't ballooning out throughout the inhale; it's his rib cage that expands. The man was the foremost teacher of Yoga in the world and practiced 5 hours of Yoga even when he was 90 and passed away at the ripe old age of 95. And keep in mind breathing is the most fundamental aspect of Yoga. So people people people, f*ck this belly breathing b.s. that's been perpetuated by the modern "experts". Learn to make space in your rib cage when you breath because that's what needs to expand when you take an inhale - NOT THE BELLY!!! If you come across anyone mentioning "breathe into your stomach" run the opposite direction as fast as your can because who knows what else they are pulling out their ass.

One should do a complete breathe, not only from the stomach, the ribs need to expand as you inhale that includes the mid chest also moving. Breathing from the belly alone can be just as bad as shallow high chest breathing. A full breath fills from the bottom the up towards upper lungs, without raising shoulders.

chest breathing. belly breathing. your diaphram is the muscle and your ribs should be expanding and retracting. belly breathing is not how it works. chest breathing could be a term. but the complete ribcage expanded all the ribs open and close. where are your lungs? in your thorax and chest. this is where you breath. your belly will move some but you do not breath with your belly. You have muscles In your abdomen that help you exhale more fully but inhale is diaphrame and unless you force the air in. the accessory muscles will be fine.

How long do you think it would take the ribs to go down? I’m 17 and just realized I’ve been breathing completely wrong. Both ribs are protruding, but how long will it take with proper breathing for them to go down?
@67Warriorcats
@67Warriorcats 4 года назад
Will Stokes Breathing wrong for so long causes your ribs to flare out.

@ryu_m8133

Omg mouth breathing is so bad for you! It can alter your face, I recommend that you do NOT breath through your mouth and instead through your nose. I was a mouth breather and started mewing, I noticed differences.

Breathing in the belly without keeping the lower ribs from flaring out causes other problems for some people that already have bad posture.

Sir could you give a clear answer about diaphragmatiq, breast and bellybreathing. As I understood these are the three breathing kind. For some say belly breathing is diaphragmatiq breathing which is not true. Could you make a video how to breath diaphragmatiqly and belly breathing to see the proces and the difference. Blessings & Gratitudes.

Ever heard of pectus excavatom it comes with rib flare where ur ribs stick out it has nothing to do with breathing so this title is wrong
@C4TNPC
@C4TNPC 5 лет назад
Sean McManus Actually what you just described is where the breastbone sinks into the chest. It can also create the appearance of flared ribs. That is a defect that forms over time. Some people with flared ribs don’t have pectus excavatum. Flared ribs can come due to a number of problems. Stress, trauma, improper breathing/improper posture can also be a cause. I personally have rib flare, but I don’t have pectus excavatum. :)
@67Warriorcats
@67Warriorcats 4 года назад
It’s not completely wrong, my ribs are flared because of how I was breathing wrong for so many years and from a combination of my shitty posture and constant heavy stress.

Do some excercises from youtube, they really help a lot. Last year, when i was 15, I had pectus and rib flared, thing that made me to not take off my shirt, but i have corrected them with a 1 year workout and i look pretty well!
