One thing I give Vince Mcmahon when regrading Ric Flair is that he didn't change who Ric Flair is.. One of his best moves of all time and it paid off.. with a tear in his eye..
Herd wasn't just the head of WCW, he was the NWA President in 1991. There are people that are stupid enough to think that WCW left the NWA in 1991, they didn't. Herd was the President and Flair was STILL NWA World Champion until he signed his WWF (not WWE) contract in September 1991.
True, but definitely in name only. The NWA barely even existed at the time. They had to reintroduce the previously-inactive NWA Board to strip Flair of the belt after he left. So, in a way, the NWA didn’t exist anymore at the time. It’s complicated
Jim Herd had such a chicken shit piss poor attitude of the the Nature Boy. The way he treated him after he not only paid his dues but way he covered for the Black Scorpion angle by revealing he was the real Black Scorpion. He took a lot of heat for being such a hypocrite wrestling in a tag team as a face but coming back as a mystery heel in the main event. It made sense to have Ric Flair in your main event pay per view. He saved WCW by this failed angle
He wasn't working in a tag team as a face that night. The Horsemen had long been turned back to heels by the time The Black Scorpion angle started. Other than that though I agree with you
Herd should have stayed in his lane. If he wanted to do writing he should have shut up listened made suggestions. After awhile I'd want to learn about writing.
Vince told him he was going to push the younger generation and he wouldn't be used as a main eventer anymore. Since they had an agreement that Flair could leave if he wasn't used as a top guy, he asked for his release
On the one hand I can appreciate Vince not messing with Flair's character too much the way he did with most other Crockett/WCW guys BUT even still he tells Ric to "calm down"??? 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🙄😒. And that sounds so accurate because that was the problem with Ric in the first WWE run, he was watered down heavily in his promos and even his ring attack. But Vince was running a cartoon show so Ric's NWA style promos were definitely too edgy and even psychological for the WWE at the time. I always say that's why Austin's promos got over so big with WWE fans, they were FINALLY ready for "grown man" promos in 1996 😄😄😄🤷🏽♂️
I think you nailed it! WWF did the same with Animal and Hawk.. You know once you go to New York your character may get toned down or completely changed outright even if you keep your name.. I think that Ric Flair and Bill Goldberg were the only ones who was 80% of their original selves when joining the federation.. I think the Public and ECW forced Vince McMahon's hand to change his stance on promos being cut.. Once Steve Austin got that green light to do edgier promos it shot him straight to the moon.. People forget that those same kids who were there during the Hulk Hogan era grew up into Adults and wanted a more mature product in their late teens and early 20s.. the demographic grew up as well..
@@kenrickkahn agreed. And guys like Jericho and Eddy and Benoit as well where Jericho and Eddy got to even expand on their characters. And a guy like Booker T who had to more or less reinvent himself
@@soulofanerd9364 I will give you Booker T and he still got the worst end of the stick( Should of won against Triple H in 2003) but I can't give you Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho cause they wasn't Main Event talent yet and didn't start main eventing until they got to WWE.. I'm talking about the Main Eventers who were Main Eventing WCW/NWA which Ric Flair and Bill Goldberg were doing..
Bret Hart wasn't a cartoon and WCW had PN News, Oz ,The Patriots , Brad Armstrong dressing like that Spiderman? Randy Savage NEVER got watered down in his promos
