RIC Royal Irish Constabulary Enfield Carbine

Enfield carbines are marvelous little guns, in my opinion, and just ooze history. This particular one is a Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) carbine, 10,000 of which were converted from obsolete British military Lee Enfield and Lee Metford carbines in 1903 and 1904. Where the British carbines had full-length stocks, the RIC wanted to be able to mount bayonets (specifically, 1888 pattern Metford bayonets). To accommodate this, the carbines were modified with a sleeve to increase the muzzle to the proper diameter and a spliced wood section at the end of the stock to allow a bayonet lug nose cap - which had to be mounted lower than the carbine stock would normally fit.
The Enfield and Metford carbines had been deemed obsolete after the Boer War, when the British army standardized on the new short rifle (the SMLE) to replace both long rifles and carbines. The SMLE included many other changes from the carbine pattern guns, which had different safeties, dust covers on the bolts, 6-round magazines, no stripped clip guides, and sights similar to the earlier Martini-Henry pattern rifles. Finding intact carbines in the US is difficult, as there guns had long military careers and were often updated and modified many times.
Note that the RIC carbine is very similar to the New Zealand contract military carbines, and the two are best differentiated by the wood at the nose cap. The RIC guns have a spliced-in larger section, where the NZ carbines have a smooth taper to the nose. In addition, RIC carbines were made from both Metford and Enfield carbines - the Metfords had been built with sling bars in the side of the stocks, and retained these in their RIC configurations. Enfield carbines used sling swivels on the bottom of the stocks.

It's the historical pronounce of the weapon and the connection to a deep and turbulent conflict. Also I would say more interesting than most weapons as it shows an evolution of the various other rifles and designs moving forward.

@MaliciousMollusc
@MaliciousMollusc 7 лет назад
peepsbates I'm neither Irish nor British but quite frankly, I think the British were at fault. Since the olden days, they invaded and plundered nations. Now that someone hurts them back, it's deemed such a lowblow. Like, how dare they resist, right?
@peepsbates
@peepsbates 7 лет назад
Of course. It was a justified rebellion but I mean in the sense that people who have never had any connection to the war of independence are still like "FOOKIN' BABY KILLIN' SCUMBAGS! UP DA 'RA!", most of it from being indoctrinated at a young age to hate the British. Same thing happens with Northerners in the UVF as well. It's a real shitshow for no good reason.

peepsbates +peepsbates I can't say I blame them. Remember, there weren't any of that ISIS crap when Middle East was left alone either... They fucked the people, the people remembered... Another example is South America. Brits fucked them as well, now they are met with torches and pitchforks..
@MaliciousMollusc
@MaliciousMollusc 7 лет назад
Jimmy De'Souza that's strange, I don't see them hosing people with AK's and bombing buses in the west before the west came for oi-----I mean to give them "freedom".. And yes, Britain did fuck South America up in WW2. If you're familiar with the show Top Gear, they went to Argentina, I think, and they were literally chased by an angry mob to the border... That South Africa business is a whole other thing...
@MaliciousMollusc
@MaliciousMollusc 7 лет назад
Jimmy De'Souza lol, you're missing the point. They minded their business until your oil-thirsty governments went in to "look for WMD's" and "to give freedom"' despite the prosperous economy present. So what's your excuse about that? About the bombings? Paris? Hmm? Lmao no, if South America was "under the influence of US" as you say, then wtf were the Brits doing there in the first place? Greedy, much? Then when they realised they bit off more than they can swallow, they bailed out like nothing happened. So much for a "united kingdom", lol... Allies my ass, they ran out from their "allies" when they needed help the most... If you still doubt me, go to Argentina yourself and declare yourself a Brit, let's see how long you last...

Calling the black and tans or auxies mercenaries is interesting, I had never thought of them that way before. It's somewhat of a stretch, but still not far from the truth. Certainly one of the government's worst mistakes during the rebellion was their creation. Army officers horrified by their commonplace and unjustified reprisal actions had no power to stop them since they were nominally under the control of the RIC, essentially they rampaged around with free rein like bands of plundering medieval sell-swords due to their poor discipline and training.

The early Lee-Enfields & Medfords were definitely designed to have the magazines swapped. They were not designed to have the magazines reloaded on the rifle. That was the change with the Charger Loading Lee Enfield - marked CLLE. The earlier rifles were supplied with spare magazines (until the Boer War) when charger guides were added to the bolt and the dust cover deleted as a result.

I'm confused Ian. So if you wanted to feed from the magazine, you would have to pull the magazine cut off outwards so it is sticking out? That seems like it could easily snag on things and and be accidentally engaged preventing you from feeding the rest of the rounds in the magazine. Am I wrong?
@johnsabini3351
@johnsabini3351 4 года назад
The cut off moves to the right so will be clear assuming a right handed firer was using the weapon. The concept of the cut off was that when a third world armed with lesser weapons enemy closed to 100 yards the command would be given "magazine fire". If the enemy closed the 100 yards it was then situation desperate and the bayonet came into play!

Sticking and poking. IRA and other factions were guerilla practicioners, meaning strike and subterfuge. As such the RIC would find themselves in mires and hedges not only looking for trouble makers, but their tools. Also, bear in mind something else the IRA and various dissidents were famous for. Better to find a trap with the point of a bayonette than your hand or foot. Finally all this was pre-WW1 when Bayonettes were still very much a stanard piece for soldiers to have (and the RIC had a fight on their hands)

You'd still need to machine mountings for the carbine to hold the bayonette as the guns were never designed for the attachment. to modify the bayonette would take a ton more work with much the same mods attached to the bayonette and still no proper mounting system on the gun.

So whats the "19.5 tons per □" stamping mean? Is it that a crate of these will weigh 19.5 tons, and, if so, does that mean there was a standardized crate size?

Forgotten Weapons Pretty crazy, I have never heard of a firearm having its surface area related to its weight. Make sense I suppose, easier to figure how much stuff will fit in a given area.
@ForgottenWeapons

It's a measure of the chamber pressure, not anything external. 19.5 tons is equal to 38000 PSI, which was the chamber pressure for Mk VII .303 British ball.

Good move sidestepping politics there. While RIC carbines are relatively rare, I've handled a few and own one. Wood damage and corrosion under the wood seem the norm, but I've never seen one with a bad bore. I assume sewer pipe barrels were replaced in the rebuild or alternatively the little carbine's recoil might have kept use down somewhat throughout their service life......and certainly suppressed follow-on civilian use. Cute yes......shoulder friendly no!

Hey Ian, do you know why they exchanged the 8-10 round magazines for 6 round ones? I used to think it was so it could fit into some kind of saddle carbine but as it has sling swivels that isn't likely. Also do you know if the RIC ever modified these by removing the dust covers, adding charger guides and SMLE mags? Perhaps during the Anglo-Irish War? I know they probably just replaced them with SMLEs but that would look so cool from a Gungeek viewpoint!

But they wouldn't shoot that accurately to the sights as all LEs (be they CLLEs to SMLEs) had to be re-sighted with the advent of MkVII 'spitzer' .303 - that said, this might have already taken place with this carbine?
@mediocrefunkybeat

Yes - which is makes them difficult to own and handle in the UK without a very specific licence. Technically the .303 is not an 'obsolete' round by UK law so it does not qualify as an historical firearm in the legal sense.

The circle with the double F stamping was on weapons obtained by the Irish Free State from the British immediately after the Treaty was signed, there was another consignment sent at the start of the civil war. Fianna Fáil (Soldiers of Destiny) came from the Irish Volunteers of 1916, it is still used by the Irish Defence Forces today on their cap badges.
