@@OMG-si3wn reducing the number of games will mess with stats and it will lose mlb money. One of the reasons mlb is the second highest grossing league is because of the number of games that are played. One of the things people like about baseball is there’s a game to watch every day. The problem is that the Ohtani/Trout faceoff is happening once in 200 pitcher vs batter battles. In general, the pitches are taking too long and the viewer is annoyed by the amount it takes. So, you have to have a pitch clock, e.g. go to the other extreme, in order to balance things out in the future. Rich is acting like every battle is like Trout/Ohtani ... Ask him again, game 89 of the regular season between Oakland and Arizona, where there is limited interest to begin with, whether a pitch clock would help.
@gustafsone
@gustafsone Год назад
Rich only mentioned it once, I think, during his pitch clock rant, but he said something along the lines of turning it off in the 9th inning or in a save situation. So we could have pitch clock for the "boring" parts of the game to move it along, and then turn it off for the last inning. That sounds like a good compromise to me so we can still get rare at-bats like this one while also moving along the slog of the middle innings.
@thedarkemissary
@thedarkemissary Год назад
@@gustafsone Nah. Inconsistent pace gonna give away the advantage. Can't just suddenly turn the clock off. Rich's entire rant is based off the assumption that with a clock, the finale wouldn't have turned out the exact same way. Yeah, every pitch would have been a violation. But that doesn't mean that with a clock, the same sequence of event wouldn't have happened anyway, just faster.

Not true. Go back and watch a game from the 80's or earlier. Pitchers worked much faster and the hitters didn't primp inside and outside of the box. It has nothing to do with attention spans or a younger generation, the game has slowed down tremendously. Combine that with the fact that there are much fewer balls-in-play, you get a boring game. @Westhood Qualzini yes, but times have changed. They were never really pressured under clock regimes. This is a different era in which pitchers are throwing harder than ever. There are hardly any specialists left like knuckle ballers. Commercials are longer. In between breaks are taking longer, coinciding with slower warm-ups. Teams are scoring more runs than ever, lengthening the game. Umpires taking longer to call the ball. There are more pitcher changes, lengthening the game. Back in that era, it was common for pitchers to pitch more innings. Some pitchers are just natural slow. It is their natural pace. You disturb that pace, he will be more prone to injuries. There's a technical strike zone and the one Umpires use. Therefore, more balls are called that actually is, leading to walks. There is also the video review challenge, which also adds more to time. This pitch clock is equivalent to lessening the natural pace of 30 minutes, but if factors of how baseball actually changed, it is more equivalent to making the game in the 1970s 2 hours instead of 2 hours and 30 minutes. The 30 minutes that made the games longer are a combination of many more things, not just the doing of pitchers.
