I hate to comment on stuff like this because the people involved probably beating themselves up already over what they should have done, but maybe it's just me and my paranoia but if I see you sleep on the floor, I'm waking you up "go get in the bed"! If I see you sleep with food in your mouth I'm waking you up "do something with that food in your mouth and get in the bed". If you sleep on the couch and not in the bed, I'm waking you up "go get in the bed!". Idk what be going on in other people's houses though.
It’s important to know other people’s normal. He was an addict. It may have been normal for them to see him in this state. Also, some people are not medically knowledgeable so they won’t notice some red flags. It’s easy to Monday morning quarterback, but we do t know what was going on in their head. I’m sure the guilt they feel is overwhelming. No need yo add to it from our assumptions.
