Rich Marazzi is a valley and Connecticut legend. He has Authored nearly 10 books, including “ baseball players of the 1950’s” “ A Bowl full of memories, and “ rules and lore of baseball “ just to name a few.
He umpired oldtimers day at Yankee Stadium from 1989 to 2005. Rich has interviewed some of the most influential sports figures from Mickey Mantle to Bob Sheppard, to Don Larsen to Mel Allen, respected by everyone who has had the pleasure of working with him. His impact on the valley community, Major League Baseball, and the New York Yankees will never be taking for granted.
It’s hard to believe he could possibly add anymore to an already impressive resume. However, in 2006, he gave older generations of baseball fans a place to go once a week to share past and present stories of this wonderful sport. The first meeting was held on a Thursday at derby Public Library, and Rich decided on the name “ Silver Sluggers” because everyone who attended had gray or white hair. Rich and his sluggers have had numerous guests from Babe Ruth’s granddaughter, to longtime broadcaster George Grande, to former umpires and everyone associated with Major League Baseball. What was originally supposed to be a few meetings, has evolved into 18 years of weekly meeting ms every Thursday at 10 AM.
Tonight, we celebrate the “ Silver Sluggers “ who reached another milestone this past month, when they held their 500th meeting. Rich returns to “ In the spotlight “ to reflect back and reminisce on not only a remarkable achievement, but more importantly, how rewarding this experience has been for him, and his fellow “ Sluggers “
